PS3 test

What we have here is everybody's dream setup. This shot was taken at Gamespot's headquarters. They can show off all they want but nope, they are not doing that. It just so happened that Sony's Ryan Bowling dropped by and demonstrated among other things, PS3's backward compatibility. While we are quite envious, we promise that one day, a big time company's PR people will go to the QJ labs. But right now, we gotta work and report what happened at Gamespot.

The PlayStation 3 recognizes a current-gen game as PlayStation 2 Format Disc. The console will first prompt to create an internal memory card before launching a game. The game they chose was Gran Turismo 4 and it ran perfectly. You may notice that the graphics look quite impressive as well, but that's because GT4 has a built-in support for 1080i. The PS3 can't do anything in terms of graphical improvements for other games which do not have that.

For the PS1 compatibility test, they chose to go with  Battle Arena Toshinden 3. Again, the fighting game was recognized by the PS3 but the graphics still looked a bit coarse. Finally, it was determined that the PS3 will be following region restrictions for older games. This is what happened after sliding a Japanese version of Kingdom Hearts 2.

pretty nice, but does anyone know how the loading times of PS1 and PS2 games compare on the PS3 to the loading times of the original systems?
