Ken Kutaragi, President of Sony Computer Entertainment, expressed his desire to have PlayStation enter the household and form its own "ecosystem" as Apple products have managed to do in the past.Sony's move to concentrate on hardware could just be the start of the Apple mimicry. As Kutaragi pointed out, Sony would be diverging from the traditional model of hardware, content, and royalties--which he referred to as a product of "the Nintendo era." He adds that they would want to make the PS3 a common platform, on which programmers can realize their full potential. But if you're thinking first-party software, you'd better think again. "[With the PS2] we're putting out a considerable amount of content. But we don't step on third-party companies' toes; it's more of a friendly rivalry."
He also didn't miss the chance to emphasize the PS3's PC-like abilities, like running popular types of OS including Linux, Windows and Mac OS. "I think that perhaps you'll see a general purpose Cell [built-in] OS." adds Kutaragi.
Kutaragi also acknowledges that although Apple and SCEI are not rivals in any way, that since Steve Jobs loves computers, idea overlaps are inevitable. He summed up his vision for PS3 by saying, "More than Microsoft, Apple is closer to our vision [for the PS3]."

honestly i wouldnt mind having another pc, if the ps3 is versitile with its os, maybe it could have dvr addon functions with the hdd, saves me on building a media pc, I own 4 custom built computers, of various age, and the more the marrier, I love being able to specialize my pc's for different needs. Games music school ect. The commadore64 was pretty much a pc for its day and it sold so who know, maybe the ps3 will sell for the same reason.
if sony were to do an apple then they'd release a crummy lcd black and white ps3 one year, the next year they'd release a slightly less crummy one with a backlight... then colour the next year, then with very small videos the next... all the while expecting (and somehow accomplishing!!!) people to upgrade each time. i am, of course, referring to the 'ipod' which, when twinned with their even more evil 'itunes', is ruining the world. also, as it's now the vogue to complain about the ps3's price why not look at the price of ipod... i mean for god's sake, 200 quid for a 40gig hdd?! that's extortion! also, consider this, as ps3 and xbox350 come packing masses of cpu power and gfx power why not make them do things pcs can? i mean, they're certainly capable, it's just a matter of whether the company behind them want to make it happen. don't you think it's somthing of a waste to have a (is it three cpus inside xbox360?) powerful computing machine only playing games? i can see why wii isn't trying to be a pc, it's rubbish (it may be innovative but it wouldn't stand a chance against my pc in power). i can see why ps3 is making a stand as a 'pc', as it has all a pc needs, without the extra fiddly parts of having to replace gfx cards or whatever... any good reason for xbox350 to not be able to do the same? i mean, you can link it to a mce pc, but that's ridiculously expensive. when you have a ps3 you'll see how useful it can be, i look forward to it.
sony wants the ps3 to be known as a computer. The specs of a ps3 probly cost over 4 grand. So sony wants this to be the seller they want the people to thing i can get a 4000 dollar computer for 600 dollars wow! This is wat they did last generation with ps2. THe ps2 a 300 dollar dvd player very cheap at the time compared to dvd players costing 500-1000 dollars.
i said on the forums last week or so that sony probably wants thier ps3 to become a macontosh like pc... i didnt actually think i was right though, but its good to be right
all u lot are just haters 4 mac os x run much better than windows think of i tunes IS the best mp3 player around BUT NOT 4 BUYING MUSIC And 4 dat u could most prob send from pc 2 ps3 wirelessly or via wired conncetion
for a second there i thought you were talking about the gameboy, you know big bulky black n white, slim down, bulkup now with color, change shape give better graphics, change shape again give you backlight, now plays movies, clamstyle that loves to be touched more than your stripper
didn't realise that... gameboy huh? well, that was never really 'cool', whereas 'ipod' is supposed to be. also i don't like ipod, but i do like gameboy et al. so that makes the world of difference.

I think apple wants to have Sony's babies... And if you read it in the right context, All he is saying is that he'd rather the PS3 be closer to Apple because we all know apple *****s on Microsoft... In more ways than one...Apple has no ego and they don't think they are the greatest things god created... Something Microsoft need to get over. If anything the Nintendo Wii is a wannabe Apple. Updates for the PS3 is the best thing since the Playstation. Who wouldn't want to upgrade?
apple is overpriced for consumer pc's, but their movie editing/photo editing pc's that cost like 3000 dollars are pretty good. but imacs suck. i got tired of the look and feel of os x in about a day. that brushed aluminum skin that they use is really really annoying. and there is no localized place for programs... you have to search your harddrive through folder after folder to finally find your program.
Apple should have designed the PS3 box, they would have probably made it all futuristic and stuff.
Actualy, the PS3 by itself has blu-ray. a blu-ray drive IN a computer is like 1000$. so its like a expensive ass PC with a blu-ray player drive thing!
PS3 wants to be IN ALMOST EVERY HOUSEHOLD LIKE AN IPOD?! yeah right... especially with that UBER appealing price-tag!. We got some drunk sony ppl here
