PlayStation 3 65nm RSX Graphics Chip to arrive this Autumn |
Ó
Since the holidays, Sony's PlayStation 3 line has been sporting the new 65nm Cell chips, which not only reduces the console's power consumption, but it also makes it run cooler and quieter. By autumn this year, the PS3's RSX graphics chip will follow suit.
This news come from Kazuo Hirai himself, who announced it during the recent PlayStation business meeting. This is the same one where a price-cut is said to be impending for the PS3. The price cut is even more likely now with the confirmation of the smaller RSX chip.
The 65nm RSX chip has been overdue for some time now, as it was first expected to be released by the end of 2007, but better late than never. Back then there was also talk of an even smaller 45nm RSX chip - we'll have to wait on more news on that.
For now, the RSX chips are still 90nm big (if you can call it big). Here are Kaz's words on the matter:
The Cell and RSX used in PS3s at launch were manufactured using a 90nm process technology. And now all PS3 Cells have shifted to 65nm process technology since last holiday season.
[...] As for RSX, 65nm process technology has begun this year already, and will be ready for installment in autumn.

so whats the point of having a 65nm or 90nm chip is somewhat different in size and save power of ps3
Smaller chips are cheaper to produce, consumes less energy so the are cooler. It is significant factor for every piece of electronic equipment.
cheaper but is it better than the 90mn or something
Sony is kicking us in the balls once again with a revamped "slightly better" piece of hardware that older users will never see the benefits of. I wouldn't mind paying a few pence less on my electricity bills ;-)
what part of cheaper to produce consumes less energy runs cooler do you not understand? how do you think they went from the original Playstations to the later revisions? both the PS1 and PS2 shrank due to changes like this.
Power saving means it consumes less electricity, its not a special way to save your score/level etc... nor does it mean that the power of the ps3 is held back
DBZ you are being dense. 65 nm will allow the chip to run cooler therefore needing less cooling and saving space. also it will use less power which will save your electric bill which some of us have to pay. the power supply can be made smaller to shrinking the size of the console, with the help of the smaller heatsinks and fans on the cell and rsx. plus, less heat means it will have a longer life span a.k.a. last longer. ohhh yes and CHEAPER.
I wouldn't say Sony is kicking us in the balls, it doesn't limit anything compared to the 'older' ps3. Its just new technology, everything one day is bound to get upgraded.
man I'm glad I am waiting for the holidays or fall to get my ps3 when these new cell chips comes out. Plus I bet the price on the 40gb 65nm version of the ps3 might be cheaper than the 90nm version that would be cool.
Smaller chips mean less manufacturing costs. Since it is smaller, it will be less power consuming and cooler. Overall, the PS3 will be cooler and more quiet. Whilst being cheaper to manufacture. This would further strengthen the chances of a price cut. However, it is up to SONY whether or not to make a cut.
yeah that 150 price cut will be sweet- ps3 with transformers bluray or 250.....no stopping the ps3 then
If only they could make the 60gb model again with the new chips and full BC.....
