PlayStation 3 45nm Cell chip starts mass production next year: possible price drops?

45nm cell processor in 2009 - Image 1Godzilla proved that size matters. But if being uber big has its advantages, so does being uber small. Come 2009, Sony and Toshiba will begin mass producing the 45nm Cell processor for the PlayStation 3.

A smaller Cell processor means smaller PS3 models - and since the 45nm Cell processor will run on 40% less power than the current 65nm Cell, it also means the console will run cooler, and on less electricity.

While all that is fine and dandy, what I'm really looking forward to are possible price drops, since producing the new processors will also cost less.

.

I'll stick with my power-guzzling behemoth if it means I can still play PS2 games on it. What are the chances of Sony bringing backwards-compatibility back?
by PS3 OUTSIDER - 2008-09-22 09:57:00
only if

all ps3 still have backwards compatability but the only ps1 and ps2 games that will work are the ones you buy off the store where as the 60gb dosnt have this problem.

(!)

You already said just what I was thinking. I hope they do bring back backwards compatibility in full force in future models because who knows, maybe if all the old ones are gone and Sony no longer has parts for them, we may not be able to get them repaired and be stuck with a half assed unit in the future.
by jgr9 - 2008-09-22 10:14:00
Oh really?

The 80gb has backwards compat. w/ ps1 and ps2 games with the disks not just from the ps store. The only issue is that w/ some greatest hits version of the games they freeze. For example star wars battlefront 2 greatest hits version. But sony apparently hasn't figured this out yet and and fixed it. - the non greatest hits vers. works fine from what I've heard.

Hey man

we wont see backwards compot till Ps2 fully dies out its still has a year and some change left in it so in about 2010 we'll see a bunch of psudo firmware updates were they poert in the emulator little by little and then the big udate'll come right now they dont wanna canniblize the platform they're still supporting ya kno that would be stupid on thier part makes sense right?
by Xis - 2008-09-22 11:38:33
*OFF TOPIC* BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY

PS2 is still alive and kickin so Sony dont wanna cannibalize thier platforms so they'er ganna kick backwards for a bit till Ps2 joins its victums in the big server in th sky wit Dreamcast and Xbox and Smash bors entertainment system I mean Gamecube. They'll upday the Ps3 slowly into backwards compatablity in about a year and a half and more than likely we'll see a new sku by then or newer 160 and 80 GB models will come with it this would be smart for Sony to screw the 10 Ps2 plan up by adding Backward to Ps3 right now you want something to play PS2 games getta PS2 if you dont have one now (cmon 8 out of 10 Americans do) its like 100 bucks WTF? stop bein greedy HAH I havea 320 GB backwards azz compat Linux so if I didnt have it id just download the emulator myself if I didnt have 2 ps2s already damn I'm PS2 covered3 fold
by Xis - 2008-09-22 11:43:40
OH YEA

By then we'll havea Slimmer PS3 by then so yes Price cuts smaller machine and backwards compatibility in about 2010 2009'll prolly announce it late 09 I mean its just software for the emulator well theres complexities for sure but they can do it by then hell I'm workin on it myself goin the java route which is impossible ( ......? )

you know...

If you took the time to write what you want to say properly (spelling, paragraphs) you might not have to post repeatedly... and we might be able to read it.

i want...

i want foward compatibility ASAP!

Same Here

In all honesty, I truly think the launch 60's were the best out of all versions so far. Think about it: Backwards Compatibility, best hard drive size (not too much, not much less), and other minor differences. Im not saying the other versions are inferior, im just stating that the launch version was the best in my opinion.

well that's all fine and dandy

but you know what, i hope not to see another 360 meltdown, even though sony produces a more stable console (i'm not trying to talk trash about the 360, but it's really filmsy). so i'm wondering if sony will just try to pump and run with the new technolgy or maybe they will take it very slow, you know?

LoL @ wall of text

There's seriously one period in that whole thing... Actually one period in the first post and his 2nd combined It isn't a race dude, take your time with your posts. No one is going to take you seriously if you don't even bother to split things up into sentences.

45nm = less silicon = less expensive

Whilst the price will fall, I think sony has already made their mind up about ps2 game compatibility, even though i really would like a fully ps2 compatible ps3, with full upscaling, I doubt it will happen. I think the ps4 will have ps2 game compatibility, but no ps3 game compatibility, something like that. my european 60 gig can play some ps2 games fine, but others (ratchet and clank 2&3) have serious slowdown and others dont work at all. I expect the ps3 to get smaller and lower price though, perhaps with more built in features like card reader, playtv, pre-installed games.
by Xis - 2008-09-23 18:25:50
This is true

prolly till PS3 Dies PS4 will def have the capability of future backcompat about 3-4 yrs after launch but then again if PS3 isnd doin to good in its dusking years it'll come earlier, think so?
