PlayStation 2 now officially launched in Brazil, seriously |
Listed in: PS3 Tags: playstation 3 updates, PS2, Sony
Ó
That's not a typo on the title, you read that right. "New" and "PS2"
can still be used in the same sentence, without being a smart-ass. The
PS3 has just turned three, and its nine-year-old older brother is still
making progress - believe it or not, Sony has just officially launched
the PlayStation 2 in Brazil.Even more astounding is that the PS2 retails in the country at R$ 799, or a hefty US$ 465 - a price that could get you an 80GB PS3 and a couple of games in the United States. The reason for the insane price is because Brazil has import taxes from hell, hitting 60% since the 90s.
Games have been around retailing at around R$199, which would be about US$ 115, Kotaku reports. Certainly, the country's black market has already brought PS2s into the country years ago. C'mon, it's Brazil, not a freakin' cave.
Meanwhile, the PS3 is already aiming for 3D:

The title states:
"PlayStation 2 now officially launched in Brazil, seriously"
Where do you find the word "new" in the title..
... Someone would have said this eventually.

On the other had, could they just buy a PS2 from Ebay?

On topic: That is sad, pricing is horrendous, but it probably is pretty high end tech there. I'm not sure how developed or industrialized Brazil is, but I've been to neighboring Ecuador and Peru with my wife and my cell phone had more technology than most towns!

I have my PS2 since 2002 (a phat one, paid R$950~US$558 with modchip), and they "release" it now.
If you go to any other store here in Brazil, PS2 is costing R$500 (US$294), and some places they sell PS2 for R$600 (US$352) WITH modchip, 2 controllers and a memory card.
And Sony is selling a single PS2 in their official store for R$799?!
HAHAHAHA man, that is funny
Yes, eletronic stuff is ALWAYS going to be expensive for us, but sometimes things are a little abusive, eh Sony?
PS: PS3 here costs, normally, R$1500 (US$882) and PS3 games cost around R$250 each (US$147). I buy my PS3 games from play-asia (around US$65 including shipping costs), but some people simply don't know they can do that, or how to do that (buy from internet).
Yeah, that sucks, and also we have extreme lag playing any game in PSN, or XBOXLive, or whatever.
So, stop whinning about PS3 features and prices (LOL, everybody begging for PS3 price drop... I'd love to pay US$399 in this console) and THANK GOD you pay US$299 in a PS3 ;)

Sucks to be them! But then again like the article says they should already have had the PS2 years and are now playing on their PS3s

Over there you can either get the original boxed console or the moded for a little more and buy pirate games for 5-10 dollars instead of the original- that over there costs a wopping 100 plus- ps3 games there are 200 plus...
There was never a console release from sony over there hopefully with this if they dont charge an absurd price even thou its a ps2 where u can buy here for 100 dollars and send over there and get the console modified with the modchip to play pirated games...
lets c how it will turn out but i dont think it will do anything good for sony, perhaps if the console comes out cheap they will sell- i doubt that- but for the same purpose to piracy.
yeah ebay and play asia they have to declare the amount of merchandise they are exporting and to brazil its only allowed no more then 50$ with out penalty if its more then 50$ declared and if they hold over there it can take uo to 3-6 months for the person to receive a letter saying that its holded that the federal reserve and they have to pay a penalty- like a tax- to take it out..it really sucks my friend had to pay almost 300 total brazilian dollars for his demon soul ps3 game...

Kaz Hirai: What can we do to sell more of our stuff?
Employee: I hear that the government suspects that there's another country under America. Ill find out where it is, and it will cost billions of dollars.
Kaz Hirai: OK, do it!
......After 5 years of researching......
Employee: After 5 years of searching I have found it sir!
Kaz Hirai: WHERE IS IT?!?!?!
Employee: Apparently the new country is called Brazil....
Kaz Hirai: Great! Lets sell our PS2's there!

While you are at it you may also want to hear this.
Altough the ps3 is relased on same date as rest of the world, the official release of the XBOX360 in Turkey was like 10 days ago... but eveyone have been playing unofficially imported Xbox360s, since there were no official release of the console there was nearly no original copies of games, everyone HAD to pirate games. And if you happen to get RROD with an unofficial xbox, you have nowhere to go.

If you ask an Unitedstatian (America is a continent not a country) abou Brazil, he'll probably say: Samba, Ronaldo, soccer, Rio, Buenos Aires!
kkkkkkkkkkkkk, but really, i have a brand new MasterSistem (genesis in USA) and a SNES, and most sadly is that ABNT just set a new power plug padron only existing in Brazil... just to make the companies have at least a conversion factory in the country...

I would not say hilarious, but kinda sad +/
what I never understood was WHY a lot of people always complained about PS3's price (US$399).
dude, if PS3 was being sold here for R$678~US$399, I would have a PS3 for each room in my house LOL
people in richer countries don't know how CHEAP they pay electronic stuff

Anyway I doubt that they'll sell alot at that price. Based on the likelihood that people that have that kind of money in Brazil would have imported it ages ago.

@ gogeta85: If Brazil has import taxes hitting 60%, who is going to buy a PS3 there? A PS2 launch seems more logical.
