PlayStation 2 now officially launched in Brazil, seriously

PlayStation 2 - Image 1That's not a typo on the title, you read that right. "New" and "PS2" can still be used in the same sentence, without being a smart-ass. The PS3 has just turned three, and its nine-year-old older brother is still making progress - believe it or not, Sony has just officially launched the PlayStation 2 in Brazil.

Even more astounding is that the PS2 retails in the country at R$ 799, or a hefty US$ 465 - a price that could get you an 80GB PS3 and a couple of games in the United States. The reason for the insane price is because Brazil has import taxes from hell, hitting 60% since the 90s.

Games have been around retailing at around R$199, which would be about US$ 115, Kotaku reports. Certainly, the country's black market has already brought PS2s into the country years ago. C'mon, it's Brazil, not a freakin' cave.

Meanwhile, the PS3 is already aiming for 3D:

Except from the "what the hell." The following catches my eye:

"That's not a typo on the title, you read that right. "New" and "PS2" can still be used in the same sentence"

The title states:

"PlayStation 2 now officially launched in Brazil, seriously"

Where do you find the word "new" in the title..

... Someone would have said this eventually.

The sentence using ' "New" and "PS2" can still be used in the same sentence" ' is correct and not tied to the title, "Playstation 2 now officially launched in Brazil, seriously." the concept is that you can use the words "new" and "PS2" in the same sentence in reference to Brazil and it'd be correct. The reference to "not being a typo" refers to PS2 offically launches" where most people would instinctively think PS2 is the typo instead of PS3. Just pointed it out since you knew someone eventually would lol!

On topic: That is sad, pricing is horrendous, but it probably is pretty high end tech there. I'm not sure how developed or industrialized Brazil is, but I've been to neighboring Ecuador and Peru with my wife and my cell phone had more technology than most towns!

And what I can say is: LOL, Sony.

I have my PS2 since 2002 (a phat one, paid R$950~US$558 with modchip), and they "release" it now.

If you go to any other store here in Brazil, PS2 is costing R$500 (US$294), and some places they sell PS2 for R$600 (US$352) WITH modchip, 2 controllers and a memory card.

And Sony is selling a single PS2 in their official store for R$799?!

HAHAHAHA man, that is funny

Yes, eletronic stuff is ALWAYS going to be expensive for us, but sometimes things are a little abusive, eh Sony?

PS: PS3 here costs, normally, R$1500 (US$882) and PS3 games cost around R$250 each (US$147). I buy my PS3 games from play-asia (around US$65 including shipping costs), but some people simply don't know they can do that, or how to do that (buy from internet).

Yeah, that sucks, and also we have extreme lag playing any game in PSN, or XBOXLive, or whatever.

So, stop whinning about PS3 features and prices (LOL, everybody begging for PS3 price drop... I'd love to pay US$399 in this console) and THANK GOD you pay US$299 in a PS3 ;)

It wouldn't make sense for Sony to have waited so long. I guess it really takes long with a lot of things in brazil (bureaucracy)?

Sucks to be them! But then again like the article says they should already have had the PS2 years and are now playing on their PS3s ;-)

well over there all they can get are imports and that often comes at 2 or 3 x more of the original amount if its a launch console whom ever can export there charge for example 00 plus for a 300$ console even when they launch over there whci was the case of xbox 360 here you could buy for 0 over there it was 00 brazilian dollars original microsoft release at at 2 for 1 in currency.

Over there you can either get the original boxed console or the moded for a little more and buy pirate games for 5-10 dollars instead of the original- that over there costs a wopping 100 plus- ps3 games there are 200 plus...

There was never a console release from sony over there hopefully with this if they dont charge an absurd price even thou its a ps2 where u can buy here for 100 dollars and send over there and get the console modified with the modchip to play pirated games...

lets c how it will turn out but i dont think it will do anything good for sony, perhaps if the console comes out cheap they will sell- i doubt that- but for the same purpose to piracy.

yeah ebay and play asia they have to declare the amount of merchandise they are exporting and to brazil its only allowed no more then 50$ with out penalty if its more then 50$ declared and if they hold over there it can take uo to 3-6 months for the person to receive a letter saying that its holded that the federal reserve and they have to pay a penalty- like a tax- to take it out..it really sucks my friend had to pay almost 300 total brazilian dollars for his demon soul ps3 game...

They may have forgotten that a country called "Brazil" exists.

Kaz Hirai: What can we do to sell more of our stuff?

Employee: I hear that the government suspects that there's another country under America. Ill find out where it is, and it will cost billions of dollars.

Kaz Hirai: OK, do it!

......After 5 years of researching......

Employee: After 5 years of searching I have found it sir!

Kaz Hirai: WHERE IS IT?!?!?!

Employee: Apparently the new country is called Brazil....

Kaz Hirai: Great! Lets sell our PS2's there!

bad for them.

While you are at it you may also want to hear this.

Altough the ps3 is relased on same date as rest of the world, the official release of the XBOX360 in Turkey was like 10 days ago... but eveyone have been playing unofficially imported Xbox360s, since there were no official release of the console there was nearly no original copies of games, everyone HAD to pirate games. And if you happen to get RROD with an unofficial xbox, you have nowhere to go.

I'm brazilian too, and guy, the import taxes here are REALY from HELL. Sony will never win the black market while selling imported consoles. The only way that the price would be fair is producting the console HERE, not importing, but I think it will not happen any time soon. Also, people who still buy PS2 don't even know that Sony officialy sells it now.

---

About Genesis still being selled, it's Tectoy who sells it, and Tectoy is a *****y company.

If you ask an Unitedstatian (America is a continent not a country) abou Brazil, he'll probably say: Samba, Ronaldo, soccer, Rio, Buenos Aires!

kkkkkkkkkkkkk, but really, i have a brand new MasterSistem (genesis in USA) and a SNES, and most sadly is that ABNT just set a new power plug padron only existing in Brazil... just to make the companies have at least a conversion factory in the country...

Well I'll assume the Philippines and Brazil are the same with the black market, and that means: You can go to the mall to buy pirated games for 110 pesos (like $2.35?), any console purchased is pre-modded (meaning PS3 is extremely rare), and consoles are priced highly.. so I guess this is just like a "why not?" effort?

we sell modded consoles on shops, i think the only one that doesnt sell it modded is Walmart XP. But games can be found anywhere, see why 360 are being sold a lot in America... 1/3 of those are being sent to South America to being modded and sold.

Daistaar... Im brazilian and i can assure you that a misunderstandin g are going on here. Here, we arent a under developed country, by any mean. Here, we have everything the rest of the world have, iPhones, next-gen consoles, and everything you all have. The only diference between us and you, americans and english, is that we dont manufacture or mass-produce many of the last-gen kind of gadgets or technology. We are a emerging country and culture, because of this, we do have many problems in regard some assumptions like politics. The import taxes here are indeed very high in comparation to the marjoroty of the countrys, but it doesnt mean we dont have money. Here we have a culture of import the newests gadgets and techs, because we have money on our pockets to pay the taxes. as said before, we are a emerging country, like China for exemple, but we dont win our money by manufacturing eletronic like China, we win our money by developing a lucrative agriculture business, the same fruits and crops you eat, and by other means. Take me for exemple, i always had the newests consoles since the Atari age, i buy a PS3 on the first week of his cicle and have the newest games. Sorry if i sound a little rush, but im not caring, realy, i do think all of this is very funny to be thuth (^^), and im only posting this comment here to put some light on some of those people that think th USA are the center of the world and europe and asia are the corners. No... you are all wrong, a little to the south have a country almost large as yours, that have a forest worth zilions and that are as rich as ou (americans) are on this moment of crises. To make the things short, we dont manufactory eletronics, we are weel know by this falt, but we arent poor and can pay some import taxes or other little things like that.

Here we dont serious problems with piracy too, its truth you can find modded consoles and pirated games everywhere (not on the malls)... but its more like a culture problem than a money one, keep that in mind. And the last thing, 70% of my friends have a PS3 full of games, and a do think that this decision to only bring the PS2 officialy to our country was because some plans are being made by Sony, disregardless of price point. ;) So, lets stop with the geocentric american way to be and be more cult about other countrys. ;)

Really sony... a console that is nearly a decade old for the price of a ps3 what a load of BS. I never thought I'd say this but there almost becoming as bad as M$. lol

Anyway I doubt that they'll sell alot at that price. Based on the likelihood that people that have that kind of money in Brazil would have imported it ages ago.

As I remember Brazil was still selling the SEGA Master System new in stores until 1998! Considering that, a PS2 launch doesn't seem so strange.

@ gogeta85: If Brazil has import taxes hitting 60%, who is going to buy a PS3 there? A PS2 launch seems more logical.
