Platform-agnostic development, the secret of Call of Duty 4's success |
Ó
Amidst lots of cases of games getting delayed (like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Stranglehold, etc.) it's good to know that Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and the PC) managed to get launched on time without any setbacks, and deliver great content as well (getting a 10/10 score from Official Xbox Magazine!). So how did Infinity Ward manage to pull it off? In an interview with Next Generation, studio head and president Grant Collier tells about the game development studio's secret: platform-agnostic development.
So what exactly is this platform-agnostic development? Collier stated that they didn't have any problems with the PS3 version simply because they do not have a preferred or "lead" platform when developing games, assigning a team for each platform.
Collier said that the usual cause of game release delays is a matter of resource allocation problems. "ThereÂ’s obviously some problem with all the delays weÂ’re witnessing. I think itÂ’s just down to allocation of resources. I think maybe people feel that theyÂ’re resource strapped and feel a little bit more comfortable working on the Xbox 360 as itÂ’s been out a little longer [than the PS3]," he said.
Collier also discussed some interesting points in his interview like his estimate on how long the current next-gen cycle will last, and his impressions about the gaming review scores given to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
