Well, isn't this a bit of a surprise. Over at PS3scene, Xantium has what looks to be the first pics and video up of Team Xecuter's PS3 Hard Drive Xtender (HDXT) and the IDE to SATA Adapter. Combined with a power source, some technical know-how, and these videos and pics, you'll also be able to install your own HDXT in time. For now however, let's have a look-see at the components.

As you can see above, The pictures show off both the pre-installed and completed make-up of the HDXT installation process. Since there aren't any formal installation procedures yet, you'll have to wait until they release it to the public.

To top it all off here's a video of the proof of concept, showing the formatting of the drive and the enabling of a Seagate 500 GB drive. Enjoy!

413/465???

Wow, anyone know why 52GB of space is already used up on the clean formatted drive?
by - 2007-04-22 15:23:04
Der....

Why it is different smart guy is because hard drives are measured in SI units and computers use binary... SI - 1 gigabyte (GB) + 10^9 bytes + 1,000,000,000 bytes Binary - 1 gibibyte (GiB) + 2^30 bytes + 1,073,741,824 bytes Do the math fool, use the brain God gave you or use google and figure it out yourself!

will it work

Does anyone know if it's possible to use an e-sata external hd with this xtender? WD MyBook has an e-sata connection on it, would be nice if this can be used to hook it to a PS3.

waste

Does anybody have any clue how to fill a 500gb drive with half-assed linux applications and the pathetic download selection on PSN? Do people out there have 10,000 mp3s or something?

PVR, multimedia, and Blu-Ray

With a ability of to load homebrew, blu-ray discs w/o disc, run a PVR, and whatever other misc digital ish I could see putting the hurt on a pretty big drive. It might be excessive for now...but give it six months its a computer.

XBOX 360 sucks balls

I'm going to thrown this in and say XBOX 360 is one *****ty ass console. PS3 is the best! SONY ROCKS!

yes it will work...

It will work with a SATA "L" to eSATA "I" cable. In some many words the pin outs for both are compatable (there were made this way on pourpose) you just need the right cable.

That was unnecessary...

Watch the video again. I KNOW its not going to be 500GB, It would be more along the lines of: 465.6612873077392578125 GB at maximum capacity. (yeah I did the math) Watch the video again and you will notice it says "413/465 GB Free" The 52GB of space I was referring to was the amount already used up following the clean format. (If YOU did the math, you would realise that 500GB - 52GB +/+ 465GB)
