Phil Harrison and PS3 - Image 1We're treating this rumour with a bit of skepticism, but user DevelopersHeart from the neoseeker forums claims to have keynote details from Phil Harrison's keynote speech at the Games Developer Conference which starts tomorrow in San Francisco.

The speech by Harrison is supposed to be happening on Wednesday, March 7, and according to these keynote details will include a lot of announcements by Sony Computer Entertainment, so lets run through them.

One of the first things we noticed was that there will be a new firmware update for North America, Japan, and Asia, with European PS3's coming pre-loaded with this latest firmware update. Here are the details of the update:
  • More refined PS Store front end
  • Playstation Network integrity enhanced
  • Wallpapers from pictures
  • Ability to change background colors
  • Sony Connect Store for music and movies added to the PS Store; hundreds of trailers/full films/song videos and mp3s available for download
  • Playstation Card option in PS Store enabled
  • Playstation Lifestyle - Similar to Myspace/Youtube; user generated content and experiences are the key and more
It is alleged that the emotion chips which won't be present in European PS3's on launch will also be removed for North America and Japan in April to reduce costs, leaving all PS3s' running backwards compatibility using software emulation. The benefit of this will be the ability to upscale selected PSone/PS2 games to 1080i/720p.

There'll also be an influx of new content available on the PS Store on March 8, including:
While this extensive list cannot be confirmed, it does seem to sound quite legitimate and has been reported on all over the internet. We won't however know whether any of this is true until the GDC speech by Harrison on March 7, so stay tuned to QJ throughout GDC for the latest news!

» old news...

Still interesting, but this rumor has been lurking for 3 days now. Oh well, I hope it's true...

» wtf >_>

wait so does this mean that the people who already bought ps3s can't upscale ps1/ps2 games?!

by Jacxson - 2007-03-04 08:14
» Sweet!..

Wow.. ps3 is finally starting to wake up... oh man I'm starting to think it was really worth the money, lair trailer and demos.. that game is going to be tight!!

by No name - 2007-03-04 08:16
» ??

From what I heard they can bypass the emotion chips they are currently in the PS3 and do the exact same thing as the ones that dont have it. But we will have to wait and see

by Vecha - 2007-03-04 08:16
» hmm..

sounds good to me.

by blitzburgh - 2007-03-04 08:22
» useless space

The PS3 updates should be updates more people will like. All these sound lame to me.

It's fake... It was on PS3Dicsussion until it was proven fake and locked.

by salimdao - 2007-03-04 08:29
» PSH?

what about Playstation Home?

by kris - 2007-03-04 08:46
» this is awesome

yey! Go QJ Go Phil Go PS3

by Proteus - 2007-03-04 08:49
» Not enough

I don't think they would have been hyping the keynote if this was all.

I'm expecting the PS3 home at least and hoping for a SIXAXIS exchange program that netting everyone a rumbling new SIXAXIS if they turn in their old ones and patches adding rumble to everything released already.

by Sony - 2007-03-04 08:59
» Sony

Sony answer's the call

by sexaxis - 2007-03-04 09:04
» how can you say this is no good?

i think most ps3 owners would be more than happy with the rumors if they turned out to be true.

and what about the guys who aren't?? hmm.. i bet they are the retarded xbox360 owners who can't think of anything better to do then log onto a ps3 news wire to spew crap i.e. you have got an xbox - play with it - don't come here making dumbass comments.

by TuShiOh - 2007-03-04 09:05
» wheres the bg dl

wheres the background downloading?!

by PS3Rider - 2007-03-04 09:06
» ...

Thats not the full update.

by Steve - 2007-03-04 09:07
» Give 'em a break

They haven't even said they're making a SIXAXIS controller with rumble or any rumble features just that theyve settled their lawsuit. How can they put an exchange program in place before creating the product!

by SoulReaver - 2007-03-04 09:08
» Playstation Card

is that gonna be like the gamercard the 360 has? That would be pretty cool hopefully it lists your skill points/ entitlements (if they ever happen) that you've gotten

by PS3Rider - 2007-03-04 09:08
» I like

I like the whole MySpace idea, PSL (playstation lifestyle) sounds good.

by Lyndon - 2007-03-04 09:16
» likely fake

Just to clarify a bit, the person who posted that info at neoGAF was a guest, not a member. While most at that forum do seem to be in the know I am taking this info with a shakerload of salt until actually seeing/ hearing Harisson's keynote.

by Undergroundlab - 2007-03-04 09:22
» rumble

You can't add rumble to old ps3 games because the games don't have rumble program into the. I don;t think an update will allowe older games to have rumble. A controler with rumble is usless if no devs. put rumble in the games.

by Figboy - 2007-03-04 09:34
» yup

just three more days until we know for sure.

i'd love for this all to be true (and with Playstation Home thrown in as well).

i love my PS3, but more demos and trailers would be nice while i wait for my games.

it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility for a Lair demo, considering that the game is 90% complete as of two or three weeks ago, and is scheduled for a spring launch (May).

the other demos are icing also.

if there's one thing the PS Store needs, it's more content (how i'd love to have a PS3 exclusive Spider-Man 3 trailer or expose. and in HD to boot!).

by Vietone - 2007-03-04 10:17
» no

The only thing thats changed is the removal of the reliance on the Emotion Engine.

They can disable its use on the current PS3s and then hardware wise, will be identical to the ones without it.

by chaoslegion - 2007-03-04 11:20
» mmm

maybe in one or two weeks

by Gamesdmc3 - 2007-03-04 12:43
» 2 the person who think they cant add rumble 2 the games out already

remember, sony said that if they come out with a game, but they want 2 add more 2 it,they can make a add on like what they did with genji, and put it in,if they can do that im pretty sure thay can add rumble on 2 a game that dident have it at first

by Gamesdmc3 - 2007-03-04 12:48
» thats not all thats going 2 b in the update

cuase i know 4 sure that the remote play future that allows u 2 access your ps3 via hotspot is going 2 b in there

by antaeus - 2007-03-04 14:25
» ...

um maybe because you don't own a PS3? I think this is great and the days leading to the launch of the PS3 in other countries will bring a huge amount of games for everyone out there.

by Seoulfood - 2007-03-04 14:37
» Killzone trailer?

Sounds good to me. Maybe we will see how the gameplay is coming along.

by TuShiOh - 2007-03-04 14:37
» how do u know?

how do u know that remote play feature is in there?

by ko - 2007-03-04 16:11
» to blitzburgh

do you actually have ps3? those updates are what every1 being waiting for. the upscale of ps2/1 games more content and more downloadable demos. wallpaper from pictures. the only thing thats missing now its resumable downloads and background download.

by samaraixenon - 2007-03-04 16:31
» killzone demo

hopefully this is true. Then i cant wait for the killzone demo

by Unbelievable - 2007-03-05 08:50
» This just in......

I am glad that your first comment was that your are taking this with some skepticism. Who is this developersheart ? A guy, as a guess, post one thing on a forum, and it is almost gospel to some of these fans. He must be very high up there to have this kind of inside information. And why doesn't he leak to the gaming press? Instead he post's it on a forum? I think there are going to alot of disappointed people come the 7th. I wouldn't put blind faith into some post on a forum. Either this developersheart , is going to set himself up, as the ALL KNOWING PS3 insider, AKA Major Nelson, or he's played a very stupid game of catch with rapid dogs (PS3 Fanboys). I hope it's all true, but something does seem right. This is a GDC conference, not E3.

by TuShiOh - 2007-03-05 10:05
» ur right

u may be right but who knows...we'll just have to wait and see

by kano - 2007-03-05 13:43
» k

demo is in may

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-03-06 01:10
» Is this something to brag about?

More refined PS Store front end - make it prettier to encourage you to buy crap

Playstation Network integrity enhanced - Great way to play catch up to XBOX live

Wallpapers from pictures - nearly useless feature requiring no effort by sony

Ability to change background colors - another useless feature

Sony Connect Store for music and movies added to the PS Store; hundreds of trailers/full films/song videos and mp3s available for download - another XBOX live ripoff

Playstation Card option in PS Store enabled - they need your money somehow

Playstation Lifestyle - Similar to Myspace/Youtube; user generated content and experiences are the key and more - if there's youtube, what do you need a cheap sony ripoff service for?

It's halarious how you act so excited about meaningless crap improvments that are old news to XBOX 360 owners.
