Phil Harrison: Sony Isn't Arrogant |
Listed in: PS3 Tags: Phil Harrison, playstation 3 updates, Sony
Ó
In a recent Interview with Joystiq, Sony boss Phil Harrison was put on the spot and asked what he thinks of Sony's recent arrogance (with the PS3). And guess what - you won't be surprised at what he says. Using the classical market leader excuse, he said that with Sony being market leader for 10 years in the console market, you can lose perspective.
He went on to say that he doesn't think Sony are arrogant, as you might have guessed he'd say, and that Sony are highly pressurized, being in the media spotlight every day, and editorialized by the media and consumers. Sony have been under a lot of pressure recently, especially since rumours (that all turned out to be untrue) wiped the floor with Sony after E3 2006.
To be honest, I believe Phil Harrison has some very good points, and I do feel sympathy for Sony. If you are the market leader for 10 years, firstly you are naturally going to be smug about your next console, especially when on the statistics you have already beaten your rivals, and since the Wii and PS3 have not yet been released, all we can go on are the statistics as to how good the actual consoles are.
Also, it is true that Sony are always in the spotlight. You can expect for things to go wrong at some point, and not all Sony bosses are that good at A) keeping their mouth shut or B) Dealing with press. So lets cut them some slack eh?

Those three companies "knew" they were leaders....and what happened?
They failed.
The kid with the highest grade who goes around saying, "i'm smarter then you!"
Will get his ass kicked for being a jack ass. And may look retarded when he makes a B on his next test for not studying as hard as he should...thinking he is the second coming of jesus christ(there was a sony ad of jesus holding the ps3 as if it were the cross)

Short point is:
Atari - to much ***** games
Nintendo- not enough games
Sega- Never won a console war, only arcades
='s
Sony- lots of decent games 1st and 3rd party, ps3 cost alot to dev, other divisions could pull them down if ps3 fails. Sony learned and is listening to us. Beleive it or not.

i tell you what you can do with this linux: NOTHING! it is only running between the games and the cell, to coordinate the instructions. this is not a linux from what you might have heared, dear windows user!
you can do alot more with the linux on a normal xbox1 (suse)

You think only americans are buying the 360?
That could be said about the ps3 and the japanese.
Don't be a racist fool.

And its doing quite well in Europe.
The xbox wasn't number 1 in America...the ps2 was.
so I don't see what Contrass is getting about only patriotics are buying the 360...when it is selling in America, Europe, and a few in japan..
i bought a ps2...not for the country of Japan...but for the games.

Let’s use Peter Moore for example. "For the price of a ps3 you could buy an Xbox and a Wii". That same damn line has been used over and over again with little justification because A) no ones owned a ps3 B) that "hub" of a 360 wont do much good without spending another 100 bucks and C) Wii's price isn't fully revealed.
I also say weak on calling the 360 thee game machine. No doubt there’s great games coming for the 360 because I do have a open taste to western games, but my primary choice are Japanese developed software. It's these games that have a cool factor that can't be denied, and thus can not go unplayed. You said it yourself that you obtained a ps2 for its games, so why would the ps3 be any different? Because it’s a Sony console and it costs 600 dollars right? wow...did I just work it around like that?
And i just gotta end it with the best examples of intelligent posters are figboy, yaz, senjutsu, and yes even Vecha.

Right now...I'm not hyped for the ps3...but I will be.
Actually...believe it or not...I'm seeing more japanese developed games that i'm interested in on the 360 then the ps3(at the moment).
I don't think the 360 becomes a game machine after you get a wi-fi adapter...or hd-dvd...its a game machine for the games.
I say negative posts about sony not because i'm a loyalist of the microsoft and nitendo camps...because i'm not impressed with sony(yet).
They want the ps3 to be a media center first then a game machine..that really dissapoints me...and makes me uneasy to get one...when at launch...I only see maybe one or two games worth getting for me...but with the wii and 360...I saw/see more then that.
I'll be getting a ps3...mostly for the games promised to come after launch.
But i didn't buy a 360 because of it being a microsoft machine...but because of the games at launch...and the research I did(and have done for the ps3) that showed me more games coming.

i mean you already know that the ps3 will play games thats its primary purpose then after that you have the extra's in there, for everybody else onces they here playstation the first thing that comes to mind is the games not that its that machine that plays dvd and such things. what else do you want? what you are trying to say is that you rather have the ps3 without a blu-ray drive and a multi-media functions and all those extras why? every company is looking for a way to make there startegy look different microsoft is there online service and live every were, nintendo is there new controller and being able to download old games (imagine if this was what sonys strategy for the next gen was) and sony is the multi-media functions in the ps3, whats wrong with that? at the end it will be games and developers will make games for the console cause they know it will sell. like you said its the games and its not up to sony to focus on the games thats up to the devs to talk about there games not sony so you should be pissed at the devs for not talking about the ps3 games that much. i guess every body's taste in games arent the same, cause i see more than one or two games that rivals anything the 360 has out now talkless of there launch.

ps3 IS about games, and we all know that really, but sony are trying to stress the importance of bluray and wireless and all that.
i guess if you consider what people mean by arrogant then sony are being arrogant, the way they simply say 'we can sell 5 million ps3s without even games' is arrogant... but that's all due to the fact that they're in such a strong position with regards to the games market. it's all too easy for a company to get to such a place that they are too confident, and perhaps they are, or perhaps the ps3 is really that good?
arrogance is not necessarily unfounded, it's simply slightly poorly expressed confidence.
the article (in joystiq) and interview were done badly, and if i were phil harrison i would be getting quite sick of people repeatedly bashing sony just because they're the largest target. he did only ask negative questions, and if you're in charge of making ps3 sound good how are you to answer such loaded questions? the guy showed his lack of integrity by even hinting at what was said off record, the whole point is that it's privileged information...
this whole fanboy thing gets tired so easily, we've all been here before, and yet it goes on. can't we wait? ok, those with 360s go play them and enjoy them... those who are waiting for ps3 who are you to say ps3 will be better than 360?
i say wait until you can judge both side by side, then let the battle commence. right now 360 is winning without a fight, but not as much as it could be...

I haven't caught anything that catches my eye...very little has me excited for the future of the ps3...unlike how excited I was over 4 Jrpgs being planned for the 360...
I'm sure things will pop up right before launch of the ps3...and after...
But I want games first..then blu-ray.

Anyways, i became off track. If you look close minded, yes it does seem like games are second, but in truth they have been first since the ps1, sony has emphisized games, backwards comapatibility to the point were we expect it as the norm now. Say playstation and youll get games, in a few years, you may say playsation and still hear games first but then youll get everything else.

Side one: For a gaming console, this thing is pretty *****ing expensive. I mean $600 is a *****load of money for a console. They're pushing the envelope with teh PS3 and I doubt it will sell as well as they projected. The PS2 and the Xbox were pretty evenly priced, so they competed very well with each other (granted the PS2 sold much more) this time, however, the pricing of these consoles have leaps of $100 per company (Projected $200 or $249 for Nintendo, $299 and $399 for MS, and $499 and $699 for sony).
Side two: If you look at it from a logical standpoint of price and features, the PS3 is pretty appealing. Given, however, that you use this thing for gaming less and less and more as a computer (like I'm using the PSP). It has keyboard and mouse support, as well as Linux support, plus all the ***** that Sony packed into this thing, I'd definately get it if it was a Computer.
Final note: As a gaming system, Sony's approaching this all wrong. You don't need this much power to keep people satisfied, and when the price gets this high, it's outrageous. If they were selling this thing as a computer, however, it would be great. With the Cell, blu-ray, and a more than decent video card packed into a 600 dollar package, this is something that I'd use at a desk more than on a TV.

i have two computers. I want a gaming console that is solely gaming...not a blu-ray player.
