Phil Harrison: "PS3 will last 10 years" |

Sony's Phil Harrison doesn't take much of a break on the PR side of things, and today the Sony front man is back again with another bold statement to make potential PS3 owners think about their choice of next-gen console, as according to Harrison the "PS3 will last 10 years." The Blu-ray player on the PS3 seems to be it's shining light and it's darkest area when it comes to features, although it allows the playback of games and movies holding up to 50GB dual-layer, it was also the component behind the delay of the PS3's European launch.
Whilst Europeans may have waited quite a long time for their shiny black consoles, Harrison has put himself back in the spotlight once again to assure us that this blu-ray feature will allow the PS3 to last a decade. He also defends the PS3's price, stating:
The fact that we could also adopt the
pre-eminent next-generation movie format into PS3 was an added bonus,
not an added cost, those are the decisions that are
going to propel PlayStation 3 to be a platform that lasts for ten
years, like we've seen with PS1 and PS2.
We have to agree that Blu-ray functionality has had and always will have a large impact on PS3 sales, but will the $600 console last a decade with the wear and tear of the average household and the price of Blu-ray players on their way down? I see what they are saying...they will still support the PS3 in 10 years, but PS4 will be out in 4-5.
Just like they still support PS2 right now, even though there next console is out.
There is no way they would be able to depend on this one console for 10 years. Hell the RSX (the equivalent) has been available for computers for almost a year now.
Cell is good, but they can't depend soley on it, the GPU is a huge part of the machine, and it's already outdated....

i'll still buy it but don't think i'm buying it because i think it will entertain me for 10 years, sure theres still games coming out for the ps2 but my launch ps2 died on me already... and i'm not going to buy another one for 100 bucks, i'd rather spend that towards something else(ps3 maybe?)
iunno how he can say blu-ray is an "added bonus not an added cost" when it blatantly is so, if what he says is true then it totally can't justify their plan of "not lowering the price" stated some time ago(its here on qj like a month or so ago)
like any new technology, i think its better to wait to see how reliable it is, don't want the drive or lens to crap out on me in a year along with millions of other people
I plan on buying one in like hopefully 2 years, when my modded xbox dies (could be sooner, it's a launch version, been opened 20 times and is making some horrible sounds) and I need something new to stream media....
Hopefully by then there is something that compares to XBMC....

Out of the previous SUCCESSFUL systems, PS1 lasted six years, PS2 may last 8 years tops. Note how often Phil lies?
Next year blu ray players will be cheaper than the PS3. Blu ray will not help PS3 last 10 years. It 's the reason it's doing so poorly!

In a way he's right though. Since there's not much useful or fun to do with a PS3, the hardware may last 10 years because it never gets used.
Somebody needs to wake Phil from his dream where he's doing a good PR job and the PS3 is a 10 year success. Also somebody smack him for lying so often and pulling unrealistic predictions from his ass.
Get a can of air and blow out all the dust. Make sure you hold the can as upright as you can so you don't get condensation on the electrics.
That help me a lot. There is still a little bit of groaning if you still getting that you'll probably find it's the GPU fan making the most noise. It's not so easy to replace but can be done.

Damn, I thought my efforts had finally paid off and the xbox troll mr common sense had gone somewhere else to spread lies and trash talk about the ps3, as usual. I was wrong.
As usual, the only person lying is mr common sense. The PS3 is not selling poorly, in fact it is outselling the ps2 and xbox 360 in units during the same period at launch. The games that are ABOUT to release (I'm on the way to walmart at midnight to pick up motorstorm) will bring even more sales to the PS3. Bluray is winning the HD format war. And the power of this console means that they won't have to release a new, white and green console in a year (ala microsoft) to make up for the lack of features and power....

If phil isn't lying, do you remember seeing any new PS1 games in 2005, the year PS1 was supposedly supported until? PS2 will be dead soon too, GOW2 will be its last good game.
Your sales figures come from sony. Do you think they would ever announce "sales are dissapointing?" They do everything they can to make people think otherwise.

Why aren't you playing your PS3 now? Yes I know there's no worthwhile games, but you're not even watching your 2 blu ray movies? You're probably using a PC for internet since the PS3's browser sucks in comparison to firefox.
Is motorstorm even out yet? With all the emails sony has sent me saying how awesome it is supposed to be I thought it was released 3 months ago! With the PS2 sony never had to hype a single game sooooo much. PS2 had lots of games. It was a success, and sony's last.
Being in the UK, and forking out £470 (around $900) for just the console and a game, i would hope it would last me ATLEAST 10 years!
Looking at the Xbox 360, if it can constantly bring out strong 1P titles like GeOW and Halo and Forza and more, i see no reason why that should'nt last me ten years also.
Either way its going to be a happy ten years for me with Gears of War, Halo 3, Forza 2, GT5, F1 (and the rest of them) Killzone 2 etc...
And yes i know that some are PS, im getting both. I Win the console war by having every console available.
I guess you can't go wrong with getting both, or even all 3, but if you figure the cost of systems, accessories, and games, it's more than most people want to spend.
I don't think any console will last 10 years, as a top of the line PC costing thousands is obsolete in 3 years. The new systems will likely come out in 2010 or 2011, and typically the older systems only are supported 1-2 years after that.
Even if sony manages to turn the playstation brand around, many people have lost trust in sony, and if they've learned from their many mistakes with a new playstation, people will be looking to upgrade.
Best case scenario for PS3, 5 years (assuming sony is doing their job well.)

The ps2 will last and is lasting longer than the xbox, MR. Sense could you tell me which came out first. At this rate you'll be buying your xbox720 sometime in 2009 (maybe early 2010, if they don't rush it again.)
The point that statement is to show that Sony will squeeze every ounce of staying power out of a system while M$ is just setting you up for their next system. (you know the one that uses next-gen media and uses hdmi, not to mention slot loading maybe some flash memory slots...you know next-gen) But it won't matter you'll buy it, be happy with one good game a year (if you're lucky) and bash the other systems hoping you'll convince someone to buy the same crap you just did. That way at least you can practice the number 1 past time of xbox live- yelling racial slurs at anyone who can hear. That's what happens when you have to wait 2 years for a good game.
I agree and why is it they just keep on going non stop with all this hype and yet Nintendo are just pounding all opposition into the ground Especially in Japan ?, they are the ones who are quitest yet their product sells around 50,000 a week more.
Quality, pricing,good games and no unnesicary Blu Ray type add ons must be the key...sells itself..
He can defend the price all he wants but I wont be buying One, remove the Blu Ray drive and I may be swayed as I really dont care One tiny bit about HD films not now not even the next Two years, I am more than happy with DVD until HD is broadcast as the norm in a few years, Thank you.

Um...not sure where you are getting your (bad excuses for) facts. Games for the PS1 were still being made well after the console had been out for 10 years, and the PS2 will make the same benchmark, since it is not even beginning to slow down (God of War 2 and such).

There is a $500 PS3 which you probably have not seen since you have had your head so far up Microsucks ass that you have not seen daylight in a few years.
As a matter of fact, I am on my PS3 now, using the wonderful internet browser that the Xbox360 seems to be LACKING. In about 5 minutes, I'm going to be playing RFoM with THIRTY-NINE other people online FOR FREE while you play your *****ty GoW third-person shooter with SEVEN other people on a service you had to PAY FOR.
And btw, if Sony sucks so much, then why the hell are you on their mailing list? You do know you have to sign up for that, right? XP

i know 10 people with 360s only in my neighborhood. 6 of them had their 360s break on them. the local gamestop had their 360 break and jam then release 3 red lights on them. Yeah, i know you guys actually get working ones too but those wont last long. so shut up, seriously. xbots are annoying as hell.

I've had mine since march with no problems whatsoever. It's very rare for a non launch system to have the error.
I'm sure you did a survey in the whole neighborhood who has 360s and didn't lie about the broken ones. PS3 isn't immune to problems either. Blu ray is new technology and has the laser almost touching the disc at all times. That hard blu ray disc coating can scratch the hell out of the laser if they colide. Nearly everyone I know in my neighborhood that has had a PS2 more than 2 years has the disc read error so you can shut it. Sony has always had their own manufacturing defects, but they only appear years after the warranty expires.

What can you do with the PS3? Less than you can do with the PSP. THat is sad! Mister Common Sense has a point. Don't use that linux excuse either. THat linux stuff just makes PS3 a novelty item now doesn't it. I can do all that ***** with the device I am using right now. The Cell is not that special either all it is good at is being really fast with single precision floating point numbers. THe Cell sucks at general proccessing. It seems to me that the PS3 could have benifited from an entirly different architecture.
Plus Sony looses more money on the $500 20GB PS3 than they do the $600 60GB PS3. Wi-Fi, Memory card readers, and the bigger hard drive really don't cost that much more.

When you sit back and look at it all, all the companies are trying to make money or keep from loosing so much money per sale. All three sell us crappy products. It is like picking between a turd sandwich, a douche, and a dirty enema bag. Either way you go you will get screwed over at some point be it overpriced games, overpriced unecessary yet mandatory hardware, online content (And we all know that online content crap is a gimmick), crappy customer service, or online membership fees.
Yeah PS3s will last alright ten years at the trash dump. PS3 *****ing blows every one should just get an Xbox 360 since is way better, and cheaper!
