Phil Harrison: "no regrets whatsoever" with PS3

But Phil Harrison is quite surprisingly... kind about it. - Image 1For the sake of accuracy in reporting, Phil Harrison replied "no regrets whatsoever" when asked by GameDaily.biz about Blu-Ray's inclusion in the PS3. The attitude that the SCE Worldwide Studios President has taken with promoting the PS3, however, can be reflected by that statement: "no regrets whatsoever."

The guy strikes us as funny, but we (well, this writer, anyway) slowly realized, funny in a good way. The guy may have quite the history of saying stuff that end up mangled, tangled, and the butt of some jokes, that once someone wanted him to seal those lips. Given the chance (and a lot of time to talk), however, he sometimes comes off middle-of-the-road, even as he thumps the PS3 as his gospel.

Given the chance to thumb down the opposition, he doesn't even come off as aggressive, too arrogant, or completely snarky (although knowing the opposition in-depth may not be one of his strong points). The long DICE interview with GameDaily has to be left as a Via link, for you to take in the raw, but we'll take some snippets of note here as a teaser.
  • Still definitely "no regrets whatsoever" with Blu-Ray's inclusion in PS3, even if he describes the decision as "painful."
  • Price drop? "At the appropriate time and when we can afford to, the business model of the industry is to pass those savings (in long-term production and cost-cutting) onto the consumer, but we're a long way away from doing that yet."
    • Upon a decent return-of-investment perhaps? Or, as Shirley Manson once put it, "When I grow up, I'll be stable... I'll turn the tables"?
  • Rumble? Nope, BUT "Having said that, there will be specific game function controllers, potentially like steering wheels that do include vibration or feedback function - not from us but from third parties."
    • Will this mean that devs will include code to support force feedback or rumble (complete difference between both, by the way) for compatible third-party simulator controllers (e.g., steering wheels and flight control yokes/sticks and throttles)? Ask them (third parties), if you must, but if you ask us, why not?
When asked about the competition, and what they could (potentially) "learn from Sony" (uh-oh, everyone please stay calm...):
  • Both companies clearly have great strengths and they've both done some wonderful things in their respective fields. (Told you the guy's surprising)
  • Nintendo: (a) He respects their innovation in the Wii, and everyone else, should be, too (really surprising). (b) "I'm not sure that it has the technology base to propel that platform in the long-term. So I think their platform lifecycle is inherently going to be shorter."
    • Do note that the trade-off of this decision is that the Wii is more affordable and profitable for Nintendo, but the implication is that there has to be a Wii 2.0 to keep up with the next-gen competition.
  • Microsoft: "Microsoft's approach I think is far too built around a single game IP, one IP, and they could learn the benefits of a killer catalog rather than a killer application. And having the broad software support in multiple genres, in multiple categories, in multiple age groups is what really propels a platform for the long-term."
    • On the other hand, the Xbox 360 has that year-long lead, which does mean that the platform does have a library of games to draw from. But Phil's statement does have merit that ultimately, it comes down to the library of games that drives a platform's life, although that practically is a fact of gaming life, anyway.

» honestly

you can hate this man, and I'll hate peter moore. I think that's fair.

Anyways, his job is to spin all the stupid crap sony headquarters does and make it into "good" news. And since there's been alot of stupid crap to spin, I don't blame him for not being on top of the game.

Let's just hope GDC will be as mindblowing as hoped for, then that'll take acouple tons of bull off his back.

by Vecha - 2007-02-26 16:27
» What?

they claim that microsoft is relying on one IP?

Is Gears that one IP? Halo3? Blue Dragon? Lost odyssey? Lost Planet? Dead Rising? Resident Evil 5? Alan Wake? Fable 2? Jade Empire 2? Mass Effect? Assassin's Creed? GTA IV?

man I love how Sony(and MS and Ninty) spin the hell out of things...

"OH..yea...the ps3 right now has a drought! But remember fanboys! Xbox only had halo! So ignore the fact that the 360 has other titles supporting. Remember the ps2!"

Kinda sounds like How Nintendo acted when sony came in the picture with the ps1.

"remember The NES! The SNES! Well now we have the n64 and Who the HELL is sony anyway!....oh...they beat us...ok we will stand in the background from now on"

Or Microsoft

"We give our customer choices! But in return if they want to make the "choices" we will charge them up the ass!"

god damn i hate this man just as much as peter moore!

» well...

He shouldn't have any regrets at this point... it's too early to tell how well the console is actually doing.

You have to give Sony props on how they handled supply. Too bad they didn't get more games out in the first 4 months. Personally I think that's the reason for the apparently "sluggish" sales. (not so much the price)

Perhaps he should regret no having more games out in the first few months.

» umm vecha

why are you getting pissed at me? or at least post a reply under me...

And while I'm at, all those games you listed, all the great, fantastic games that you laid out. well, only 1 of them defines that console. And before you blow me off understand that yes Blue Dragon was a hit, yes Bioware makes fantastic games and yes Micrsoft bought out two titles (I'm looking at you Bioshock) but at the end of the day, there really is only one exclusive title that gets its core gamers riled up.

And go ahead and try the, “oh but Dead Rising sold millions of copies” but guess who those million owners are? They’re probably/most likely Halo fans wanting a new IP to play. But go on, call me a dolt.

Infact find me someone who’s waiting to get a 360 when [fable, mass effect, Alan wake, etc.] come out. Now look at the exlusive(?) IPs Sony is thinking about: Ratchet and Clank, Final Fantasy XIII, MGS4, Grand Turismo, DMC 4, Heavenly Sword, Tekken 6, the naughty dog project, and the list goes on. The bottom line is, that one IP Phil was referring too was that one game that individualizes the 360. While the list I mentioned are just a few games I hear being in the same sentence as: “I’d get a PS3 for _____”.

And by the way, The Black Donnelley’s was actually pretty good. But man, Heroes is way too *****in hot! *ahem*.

wait till every one sees GOW2 for the PS2, lol, SONY WILL BE LAUGHING ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK ON AN OLD GEN GAME!!! GOW2 will probably out sell any 360 title to date!

» No regrets my ass

That's funny they act happy with the PS3.

We all know their sales expectations were not and will not be met by a long shot. They obviously knew the PS3 would not sell 110 million again like the PS2, but they thought the profits could be comparable. Blu ray sales would make up for game sales, then when blu ray "wins" (which they declared after only one month of better sales) they could focus totally on games. Their sure fire plan of the forced blu ray player sale with the PS3 didn't work as expected, so what's the next move? Are they finally working on games yet?

He has said some very stupid things, so this comes as no suprise.

"no regrets whatsoever" = We learnt nothing from a poor launch and Blu-Ray is still the focus.

» To Devise

Thats the best translation. Blu-Ray Is a *****bomb just like betamax except it is taking the ps3 with it... the only reason i like the ps3 is for linux.. but until they hack it to be able to fully use the video card. to its full potential it really isnt worth the price.

by BULL3TPR00F - 2007-02-27 03:14
» @ Vecha

lol u idiot, at least 3 of the games u named are available for or going to be available for PS3 come the games launch.

the only thing that makes a console is exclusives, not games u can find anywhere.

lol one IP means exclusive games, killer appz are only exclusive to a console, its not a killer app if you can get it from anywhere. and sony wins it hands down with a killer catalog.

by BULL3TPR00F - 2007-02-27 03:17

KILLZONE

by BULL3TPR00F - 2007-02-27 03:19
» OOOOPPZZZ

i meant to say that killzone was supposed to be an amazing game, and it is a great game, but its not as great as it was hyped up to be.

as for socom. hands down i agree with you. i am a socom addict, i play it all the time, lol im a veteran in that game (i have like 7 socoms).

socom is THE greatest game ever :) (lol watch the *****s flame me now)

by Spooks - 2007-02-27 04:19
» HA!

Blu-ray is outselling HDDVD.

Blu-ray will not be the next betamax if it continues to grow like it has.

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-02-27 04:59
» he's funny

Microsoft: "Microsoft's approach I think is far too built around a single game IP, one IP, and they could learn the benefits of a killer catalog rather than a killer application. And having the broad software support in multiple genres, in multiple categories, in multiple age groups is what really propels a platform for the long-term."

So he's saying the PS3 has a "killer game catalog?" Well at least it's better than the Atari Jaguar.

Gears of War isn't the only AAA game for the 360, ya know.

by RastaDator - 2007-02-27 07:11
» To x360 fans

Let me explain via a absurd example what Harrinson said: suppose MS needs to cancel all its 1st party IPs but one, which one do you think MS is going to keep alive? I'm sure most of you are thinking in HALO. Lets see the negative example, suppose MS is given the option to keep HALO or all its other IPs, what do you think MS is going to do?

SONY, on the other hand, has so many and successful IPs different from each other that if you kill one of them most PS users will not be concerned because they prefer any of the remaining titles.

by Devise - 2007-02-27 07:50
» ...

I think you are getting first party exclusives and third party exclusives mixed up. If sony fails with the PS3, all sony third party exclusives will move to the 360. Some have already moved over like Grand Theft Auto, Assassin's Creed, Virtua Fighter 5, Virtua Tennis 3, Resident Evil 5, Unreal Tournament 3, Fatal Inertia, Bladestorm, Armored Core 4, Guitar Hero and Dragon Quest (to the DS). MGS4, DMC4 and even Tekken 6 could hit the 360 if MS opens up their check book. There is plenty of other titles that could be stolen away. Publishers loyalty is only to their pockets and Sony is having problems opening theirs at the moment to stop titles from jumping ship to other platforms.

by Matt - 2007-02-27 08:33
» poor launch?

How many units did they sell in the first two months compared to 360. PS3 sold approx. 50% more units in the same time period, despite the fact that 33% were for resale on Ebay those PS3's still ending up in consumers hands. Every console launch has been poor recently.

by Matt - 2007-02-27 08:35
» Game Quality

If more games become multi-platform then the overall quality of games in general will go down and brining us backwards not forwards.

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-02-27 08:51
» I think they regret putting ken kutaragi in charge of the gaming department

If they announced they had regrets about giving away the top game console spot and settling for third in their quest to make blu ray beat HD-DVD, even die hard fanboys would feel cheated.

Sony knows they screwed up, BAD. Admitting a mistake is something a company like sony would never do. Shares would plumet, PS3 sales would go down (even more,) and it would be disasterous for the company as a whole. They're just telling PS3 fans what they want to hear.

System Sellers + 1 game that can sell a system alone.

There really isn't that many. The PS2 had 4 system sellers. Grand Theft Auto, Grand Turismo, MGS and Final Fantasy. MS has taken GTA off the list for Sony and I beleive they are working on MGS. They are trying to combat Grand Turismo with Forza 2 and PGR 4 and Final Fantasy with Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey. I hope to see some new system sellers this generation instead of the same old thing over and over again.

As for this year...

The only killer app Sony is getting this year is MGS4 which is easily matched and exceeded in demand by Halo3. GTA IV and maybe Assassin's Creed are both system sellers. The most affordable system this holiday season is probably going to move the most consoles because of those 2 titles. Guitar Hero 2 will be a little bit of a system seller but not as much as it was for the PS2, it's probably matched by that Singstar crap.

by Devise - 2007-02-27 09:02
» ...

The 360 sold every console they made for 8 months. The PS3 was sitting on shelves after 1 month.

by Devise - 2007-02-27 09:22
» ...

I know, games like Assassin's Creed, Unreal Tournament 3 and GTA 4 will be totally crap...not. That is probably the worst statement you have made so far.

Here is a quote from Hideo Kojima creator of Metal Gear Solid.

"I feel that hardware is no longer a matter. I'm just talking about PS3, 360 and PC. Revolution [Wii] is totally different, but there are really no differences among the other three."

If you talking about crappy PS3 ports because it's too expensive to make a decent port on the rate of return, well yes. The quality is going to suffer...for the PS3 ports.

by TheDude - 2007-02-27 10:00
» ......

And exactly how many games did the 360 have out after four months? Ya thats what I thought. Maybe some of you should look at Ebgames.com and notice that starting March the games will be rolling in like crazy. Gears is pretty much the only AAA title on the 360 by the way. Lost Planet is alright, although the single player in both those games is painfully short.

by Really? - 2007-02-27 15:53
» I don't think so, just read this:

"The only killer app Sony is getting this year is MGS4 which is easily matched and exceeded in demand by Halo3"

Please, c'mon. I mean, get real.

Halo 3 is nothing standing in front of MGS4.

by ^^^ - 2007-02-27 17:42
» to the dude

yup march is the month... but guess what? almost all the good ones will be coming out for almost all systems.... some of them even delay releases for the PS3... cant wait for the extra maps for R6... WOOT R6 FTW!!!!

In terms of sales last gen Halo 2 won with an install base a 5th of the size that MGS3 was on. From a stats point of view Halo3 is the favorite to sell the most copies and move the most consoles. I still think MGS4 will be a great game as well, it's just not as big a Halo3.

by hmmmm - 2007-02-27 18:08
» ^^^^

keep thinking that to yourself and maybe just maybe MGS will have a better online experience than HALO... just keep wishing and maybe your wet dreams might come true...
