Phil Harrison discusses Warhawk, MotorStorm and Blu-Ray |
Ó
As a little one-two-three combo for Brit SCEE VP and SCEI corporate exec, Phil Harrison also addressed the major negativity against the PlayStation 3 in a one-on-one interview with Colin Campbell of Next-Gen. He believes that it's about time that things turned around for the better. And with the awesome Playstation Home feedback they've received from the press and fans alike, they've probably made the biggest 180 ever. With highly anticipated games like picture-perfect MotorStorm and "sky's the limit" action title Warhawk, the PlayStation 3 will finally be getting its dose of great games. It may be a slow process, but it's a steady climb to catch up with competing consoles after much delays.
MotorStorm, Evolution Studios' desert racer and artistic masterpiece, is already out in the U.S. (coming soon late March to you folks in Europe) which Next-Gen considers as one of the best racing titles for 2007.
The Japanese version of MotorStorm didn't have multiplayer, but after a revamp of the game for the Western versions, Harrison considers the improved versions as graphical marvels.
"ItÂ’s a work of art. It is so much fun to play and also multi-player mode, which is something that the Japanese version didnÂ’t have but the U.S. and European versions are just killer. The reviews have been great so IÂ’m really, really pleased about that," Harrison said.
Warhawk, a highly-anticipated title plagued by rumors of being cancelled, just hit another rumor bug that it now will only sport multi-player. Alright, so it was swatted with a confirmation, but Harrison wanted to clarify some things first. The game was switched to multi-player only (though not download only) because they prioritized polishing the game as an online romp rather than a mixed bag of mediocre solo play and multi-play.
The idea stemmed off from the success of some PC game distribution mechanics that screamed "online only" and Sony wanted to tap into that successful business model. Additionally, they observed the growing numbers of players online at the PlayStation Network and they were pretty sure Warhawk would blossom into a multiplayer hit. So they switched the title to a 32-player online dogfight and Harrison feels they've made the "right decision" by doing so.
As for Blu-Ray, Harrison still believes that it will be the "next-generation movie format of choice." He believes that Blu-Ray will weigh on the great value of the PlayStation 3 and continue to boost its sales. With newer next-generation formats coming out to compete with Blu-Ray, he believes that for Sony, Blu-Ray is the best choice.
