Yes, I am Mr. Confidence! - Image 1Sony's Phil Harrison has got some confident words to say about the next-gen DVD race and their next-gen, the PS3. Says Harrison, "I think we have everything that we need to compete, not just relative to the other players in the market but also to grow the market. This is something that is part of our corporate culture."

He also believes that they will be able to retain their position as the leader in the next-gen war, with the Blu-Ray's success helping out in the boom of the PS3 sales. And that ain't the only ammo they have. There's also, of course, the games and the online services that are luring people in buying their console.

But focusing on the Blu-ray, "In America, where PS3 disc is already out, Blu-ray disc is surging ahead as the next-generation movie format of choice. It's absolutely trouncing any other formats, and I think we'll see the same in Europe and the UK." And with more titles on the way out for the Blu-ray format, then it's sure to play a factor into the consumer psyche as time goes by.

» Boring

Sales are poor compared to DVD these new formats aint even making a dent. No one cares about them in fact even talking about them has become a bore.

» it's definitely a growing market...

I actually own 12 blu-rays and there are quite a few I'm still planning on getting. On a 60" Sony 1080p setup, nothing can match the quality. I'm throwing all my old dvd's out cuz I can't stomach to watch them with the picture quality difference of blu-ray. As HD tv's start to take ahold of the market, you'll definitely see blu-ray sales growing quickly. And really, it's doing just as well or better than dvd did when it first hit the market. For some people there is no price limit when it comes to pleasure and entertainment (just look where the money is...sports, movies, bands/singers, etc...if you find a new way to entertain people, you've found money) The idea is to attract these types of people with initial launch and then to lower the cost of the product by manufacturing efficiency by the time these sales slow. As soon as next year you will start seeing HUGE price drops, and blu-ray will have taken over the world.

» growing...how much?

Well the people who want all the blu rays are a niche market. Definitely not a big enough market to pull in profits to make stock holders proud.

I want to see good movies, not high detail movies. I don't want to have to throw down $2k (in addition to PS3 & blu-ray disks) to get a monitor & sound system to take advantage of blu-ray.

Hollywood needs to realize movies with good stories that don't tear down people's ideals and morals are the ones that ultimately sell.

Rewinding VHS sucked. Having to screw with the settings on a VHS player to calibrate out the horizontal noise sucked. Having a VHS tape break inside the player sucked. DVD solved all of these.

From a convenience standpoint blu-ray (and HD for that matter) buys nothing over DVD.

» your theory and its relativity

The problem with what you say "Blu rays are a niche market" is true about ALL NEW TECHNOLOGY. Lets see, HDTVs are still a niche market at this point, I only get like 12 HD channels where I live from my digital cable. In 1997 DVDs were a niche market too. You can't say this does not matter because these are the roots of the growth. In about 2-3 years you will see booming sales of HD televisions and disc players (who knows if a clear winner will be present then).

» Guess you haent checked this weeks stats

The last week that ended, HD-DVD has pulled ahead again. Even the Amazon %50 off deal isnt drving blueray as much as they wanted. I own 20+ HD-DVDs, and they all look killer on my Sony SXRD.

I beleve in quality vs quantity, and right now, blueray has horable quality. I can blindly buy a HD-DVD, but Blueray, i still have to check AVS or other sites to verify the quality of the encode.

Also, expect the $300 HD-DVD player this summer. And billy, i know why you dont like DVD anymore, because your BLueray player cant upconvert like my HD-A1 can. Many upconverted DVDs that i have have looked better than there blueray counterparts.

oh yeah....march 13.... good bye HD-DVD.

» phil harrison rocks

at first i began thinking he sucked, but i have the feeling he'll be the man. Maybe i'm wrong, but we'll see in the future... In my opinion sony's doing ok (but not great) after all.

Since I'm spainsh, I still haven't seen any blue-ray, nor hd-dvd movie, so I can't say anything about this topic yet.

by CHUCKINGROCKSATSPACESHIPS - 2007-03-13 04:52
» Lurker wrong

Blu-ray don't look worse than HD-DVD. Your a lying sack of floppy disks! I watched a Blu-ray movie on a Sony Bravia 1080p LCD tv and know that your full of **it on this one bud. Why would you support something that has less value? And upconverted DVDs don't look better than Blu-ray movies unless your talking about an old movie say like "Casablanca" or something on Blu-ray. This is childish junk.

by Madlax - 2007-03-13 05:04
» its a matter of time..

in a couple of years all channels will be shift to digital broadcast, and everyone will start upgrading their Tv sets

HDTVs are getting cheaper with every passing year, eventualy they will be the standard

when that happens blu-ray and the next-gen formats in general will become critical to take advantage of the new Tv sets

then the PS3 will see an incredible boost in sales,as its the most complete media center console available [and in 2 years...the price will probably drop and be more affordable]

should blu-ray win [which is likely] this will boost the ps3..

by Madlax.. - 2007-03-13 05:09
» completly false...

"beleve in quality vs quantity, and right now, blueray has horable quality"

naive..

the main reason is that early blu-ray movies used the mpeg-2 codec while HDDVD use the better VC-1 codec

now Blu-ray movies are using the Mpeg-4 codec which is as good if not better than VC-1

you can see that in Casino royale which features Dazzling picture quality not to mention that blu-ray has higher sound quality

by To Lurker - 2007-03-13 05:41
» Hopefully you don't consider upconverted pictures good

Actually I have an upconverting dvd player, and if you think that the picture is as good as blu-ray or hd-dvd, then your a true nutcase...it's not.

» phil harrison does not rock

Phil Harrison's job seems easy. Lie your arse off to satisfy investors and consumers who stand to lose money if it does not succeed.

Check out these lies:

Sony executive Phil Harrison has told GamesIndustry.biz that he is confident Sony will retain its position as market leader in the new console cycle, predicting that PS3 sales will be boosted by the success of Blu-ray.

When was sony the market leader in the new console cycle? PS3 was not, is not, and will not be the leader at really anything anymore. Most people will attribute the last consoles' success to luck, hype generation, and other companies' mistakes.

"Sony has declared that Blu-ray is already winning the next-gen DVD format war, with discs outselling HD-DVD by a ratio of more than two to one.

The company is quoting a report by consumer research firm Nielsen VideoScan which states that Blu-ray is winning in the cumulative sales stakes. During the first week of January, 47.14 HD-DVD movie discs were sold in the US for every 100 Blu-ray films shifted.

During the second week that ratio increased even further, with 38.36 HD-DVD titles sold per 100 Blu-ray discs."

WOW BLU RAY WON! for 2 weeks. with many new blu ray releases dumped onto the market at once. THAT'S ALL I NEED TO HEAR I'M BUYING ONE NOW!

What a load of crap. Since HD movie sales will not take off for years, 2 weeks of better sales shortly after introduction doesn't mean s*it.

Wait! There's more.

According to Harrison, "Blu-ray is likely to become the most popular movie format within a short space of time - just as DVD quickly overtook VHS."

"In America, where PS3 disc is already out, Blu-ray disc is surging ahead as the next-generation movie format of choice. It's absolutely trouncing any other formats, and I think we'll see the same in Europe and the UK," he said.

Yes, "trouncing" other formats.... For 2 weeks of January, according to ONE research firm. Keep dreaming. DVD had many advantages over 20 year old VHS at introduction. DVD offered no rewinding, no tracking adjustments, instant scene access, menus, and better picture quality.

Blu ray only offers better picture quality and the need to spend $500-$1000 for a player, along with double prices for movies.

Says Harrison, "I think we have everything that we need to compete, not just relative to the other players in the market but also to grow the market. This is something that is part of our corporate culture."

Apparently games are not needed to compete? Fewer exclusive games than either competitor? Easily the lowest number of total games than either competitor? What about some kind of definition on what the PS3 is supposed to be? It can do many things, but nothing very well.

» also...

Here's from an interview with GamesIndustry.biz.

"Do you accept that Sony has had a bit of an image problem with PlayStation 3 in recent months?"

Phil Harrison: No, I don't accept it. I've been doing my best to make sure that the world sees PlayStation 3 for what it is. I can't deny that we've had some challenges, but I think those are all behind us. It's all about software now, it's not about hardware. It's all about services, it's all about the way that the industry is changing and the way that we hope to be taking a leadership position in that change."

Note how he refers to them as challenges, not problems?

He thinks all the problems are behind them. HA! Must think they'll sell PS3s based on a few heavily hyped rush job disapointment games like motorstorm. He even said he's proud of it after lying about being 1080p at 60 fps and when most game rating sites gave it an 8 out of 10. In terms of software and services, the PS3 and sony are simply falling behind.

He also does not accept the fact the PS3 has an image problem. Phil is in denial and needs counsuling.

Get a life man. Thats all I have to say. Besides Blu ray winning against hd dvd of course.

You must be a child or something. Maybe your gay, I don't know but from your talk, you seem mad for some reason. They could have just waited until people bought their PS3 to tell them about the EE chip not there. They are not really obligated to tell you anyway. They say that PSone and PS2 games are compatible and thats all they have to say. They would not be lying about that.

Well if the UK is in Europe and prices are supposed to be on equal par why is the PS3 a lot more expensive there ?.

@ Billy

There are a few games worth buying for PS3:

Oblivion

Motorstorm

Tekken 5 DR

Virtua Fighter 5

Resistance

And Lair, Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Heavenly Sword all coming soon. Please don't use the "no games argument" as this console has been out only 6 months. Take a look at the Wii that has barely 2 games worth buying. The 360 has the superior lineup now but has been out for over a year. HDDvD is dying fast. Its losing support and blu-ray is gaining it. I still don't see how anyone can argue for it.
