Peter Dille: Sony "actively thinking" of charging for PSN

It's been the quiet talk of the town for a while now, and finally, Sony's saying something about their alleged plan to start charging for the PSN. It's definitely something they're "looking at."

In a chat with IGN, senior VP of marketing Peter Dille stated, "It's been our philosophy not to charge for [the PSN] from launch up until now, but [chairman and group chief executive officer of SCE] Kaz [Hirai] recently went on the record as saying that's something we're looking at."

To further drive down that nail with the hammer of (almost certain) finality, he said, "I can confirm that as well. That's something we're actively thinking about." Great, so they're nto just "thinking about it", they're actively thinking about it.

Nothing's set in stone yet, apparently, as even he concedes that he doesn't know yet what Sony will be charging for or it will even come to fruition.

"What's the best way to approach that if we were to do that? You know, no announcements at this point in time, but it's something we're thinking about."

What are you thinking about what they're thinking about?

like some of the comments below address, I do think that sony would be in a bad position in charging online play.

What people may not be thinking are games like the agency. I haven't heard too much about that game recently. Maybe they are thinking about charging the agency and other MMO's on the PS3 like WOW.

Same on PS3, they have tons of free avatars, and only if you want licensed ones do you pay.

It's the dynamic themes where Sony is bringing in the money(I bought the LBP one and it's cool)....and even regular ones, though I've yet to buy one.

Also, ya I will not pay for on-line play....it's the biggest "feature" sony has going for it.

If they want to charge monthly to watch vids or some sort of game rental service....that's ok.

if it means upping DL speeds and better overall connections to MP games, as long as they keep a free option, I'm all for it. Maybe then PSN can have a Games on demand section like XBL.

As they said above, this will make people move to xbox. However, I don't think it will make actual ps3 owners to sell their console to get an xbox, cause it would be the same (you would have to pay anyways), but it will make people who still doesn't have a ps3 buy an xbox. It would be one of the worst Sony's decisions since the PSP Go.

In the past months they said that they planned to add a premium service (which you have to pay) but they wouldn't touch the free one. ... Sooner or later we'll discover if that was b*llshit and they give a f*ck about their consumers (which would be start charging for what nowadays is free) or just add that premium optional stuff.

i dont mind if they charge, if they bring more features to the table if you know what i mean

i remember a while ago there was a post about them thinking of offering different payment plans or something like that.

it would be good if they let us do what we can now free as normal but if we want like better features i guess i wont mind paying for them
(providing there good and not something fucking dumb like that whats new thing on the xmb or the white sparkles on the psn defult background)

# not going to freak out about it like some here, but...slack04 2010-02-05 03:17
first: some folks on here need to take a deep breath and think. "corporations" are set up to make money, why else would they exist? don't freak out that people use capitalism when they live in a capitalist country...

the fact is that they've been giving away a service for several years now, one that costs money to provide. so they're spending money keeping PSN up and not recouping it through user fees. if they decide to charge for it, it will definitely hurt the one major advantage they have over 360, so i think it would be a major economic mistake for them to implement it since they will sell less consoles (and in effect- they will lose user base and developers to other systems, etc).

then again, in my opinion so long as they don't charge for online gaming, then have at it. i don't really use anything else on PSN. if they absolutely had to charge for it, please get rid of Home, noone uses it and i hate the idea that my money would be wasted on that crap.

Yes, they do cost money, but that should be part of what you get when you buy the damn game.

I can see how it might be fair if the game isn't online only, but for games like MAG and Socom Confrontation, you bet your ass it should be free to play online when you buy the game for $60.

because beside the fact that 360 had close to no killer app exclusives last year as well as the fact that 360's still have a crazy high failure rate along with ps3 being the only system with rechargeable controllers and even that free crappy internet browser as well as games like god of war 3 and the last guardian coming out this year. you my friend are absolutley right free multiplayer is the ONLY advantage :-*

I see this is another topic where something really vague and useless is made into a bigger deal than it is, and the fan boys/girls bicker about things that are completely irrelevant like them charging for avatars *you get more than enough for free... so its not like it matters...*

on topic I have been saying for ages that sony needs to stop half assing things and actually do 1 thing right =\ I mean is that too much to ask for?

lets start with dynamic themes, these were the big thing of 3.0 atleast for me and my friends, we have seen a rather limited and half ass amount thus far *sackboy on the run is atleast worth the cash* and sony doesnt seem to really care about what is really considered "dynamic" IE GoW 3... flame in the eyes = Dynamic theme which is really just half ass =\

qore, a lot of the information is old, or uneeded like 2 months ago we got White Knight which is a year old Japanese game so im sure anything you want to know you can find from that, and this month we got Yakuza 3 which has been out for so long yakuza 4 will be out about the same time as 3 stateside =\

same with the free items in Qore, the same week that dynamic themes came out qore came out and it didnt even feature a free dynamic theme *would have sold some qore =\* and to date none of the qore themes have been dynamic but several of the games that had themes in qore later released a Dynamic theme

White Knight
ratchet and clank
etc

in addition the member content for exclusive items from this point has been lacking overall in other areas

considering a lot of people dont get the promo items that are given outside of qore *like beta access* ive missed out on a few, and others were later/shortly after given as a normal download/easily obtainable

MAG
uncharted 2
mod nation
and now god of war 3... which come on it was free with preorder and with collection =\

why do i keep talking about qore? well qore is the only subscription based thing that sony controls in the states that is linked to psn which actually affects content *the news app and toro social program* countlessly and nearly more often than acceptable qore finds ways to be lacking and disapoint. For this reason i am sure that the pay model will be lacking and anything we gain if only online gameplay *which will be basically mag/MW 2 or echos =P* a pay model doesnt make sense

I wouldnt mind paying for psn access if they improved their servers. Its like that saying goes, you get what you pay for. I love my PS3, but the servers seriously suck! I tried to make to make an online session on TV Show king for a fucken half hour! Me and my friends are all on 15MBs cable connections (Thanks uncapped modems!) So we know its not something wrong on our end. Ive lost gaming sessions so many times on PSN. Whenver I play on my friends Xbox 360, I never ever loose a game. Like I said, I love my PS3, but the 360 has a much better online gaming experience, hence the whole reason why 360 always sales more copies of online shooters then the PS3, and a good example of that is Modern Warfare 2. If they seriously improve their online experience, I would not mind paying for it. And seriously, its only 50 bucks a fucken year! Come on, its not gonna break your wallets! 50 bucks broken down by 12 is about 4.10, which isnt bad. People are set off when they hear 50 bucks, if they had a monthly payment plant, it wouldnt seem that bad. You can just cut eating a whopper once a month, thats it. However, I do think its retarted that Microsoft does charge PC users for their service, since PC users have had free since what, oh yeah, FOR FUCKEN EVER!!!! Youd have should have a PC if your stupid enough to pay for xbox live!

If Sony starts charging it better be a premium service. AKA you have the option to keep what you have now and what has been free since day 1 or pay however much for added features. If the whole thing starts costing money that will be shit and I will likely no longer play games online -_-

Online gaming should remain free and also some apps or game like Home and the PSP Upcoming Room (JPN only so far), but if they charge they should charge to get something speciall...the question is: WHAT could you get worth of your Cash?...uf they just start charing for PSN access they're gonna F-things up real bad...we are used to play online for free so thats the only thing should remain free

I really dont mind if Sony is going to charge for PSN, since they keep the ACTUAL service that we know for free.
It's simple, if they create a new model of PSN with extra-features like cross game chat for instance.
Then they rename the actual service to basic or something, and keep it free. I see no problem, who that like the free service, or actually dont what to pay, will be fine, and who want all those fancy functions pay for it.
Quite simple to me, and when they talk about charge for PSN I think that they are talking about this, because they made an Internet survey, someone remember?
just my two cents
sorry for my awful english!
Thanks everyone.

The PS3 has a broad audience from children of 4 years old to adults of 60! Charging for PSN would be a disaster for the young kids up to a age of 13/14, which can't pay that and they will not be able to let their parents pay for a online service after paying for the console itself!

I was reading the article about the drop in psp and ps2 sales and the increase of ps3 sales. Sony may see this as a way to make more money, they are not paying attention to the pattern of their latest systems. they make a great system, then they remove all of the reasons alot of people buy the systems, then the system sales drop, then they make a new system. another thing when online you have to pay isp charges for your connection, then they look at adding charges for the ps network. if they look at the current economic status they may realize that this may be a possibly money making for a little while but in the long run it will cost them more when they loose customers.

DigiTalDeaD post the details of what the"extra premium services". I feel what you are saying but it still it may be process resembling the funnel effect, with the end resut of the every aspect of the psn costing money

products currently w/wo charges

charges \ / process

End result:All products have a charge once they eventually make their way through the funnel.

# Charging for online play...Guest 2010-02-06 21:33
Ok guys, let's take a look at some facts that I'm taking from memory.

Counter Strike? Free online play, one of the most addicting series of all time.

WoW? Payed online play, the most played and addicting game of all time (according to statistics of game addicts.)

It's a mixed standard. Some games that are pay for online play are good, others that are free are fantastic.

Warhawk is simply one of my favorite online games of all time. It's just very addicting. The graphics are colorful, the DLC always added a very much needed little touch, and the maps were either gigantic, or just small enough.

Gears of War 2 is fantastic when it works. When there is no lag online, and there are no cheaters? The game IS insanely amazing. But sadly, at this point, it's kinda hard to run into this.

But that's not what I'm here to post about.

I'd like to point out two fantastic games.

Heavy Rain, and Mass Effect 2.

Now this is where beauty sets in. You don't ever have to worry about paying to play online for these two games, because they are completely single player. You don't need an Xbox Live connection to play Mass Effect 2. If Sony starts charging for online play? Guess what: Heavy Rain doesn't use that charge.

It's stupid to say that "OH NO I CAN'T PLAY THIS CONSOLE ANYMORE BECAUSE I HAVE TO PAY TO PLAY ONLINE NOOOOO"

Guess what: There are fantastic single player options out there, and split screen has and will always be fun. While multiplayer games are extremely fun, the single player based games have a tendency to also be stunning.

Don't go around crying because you have to pay to play a game, because you don't. You can still play offline for free, and still play splitscreen on some games.

And you know? I really like Xbox Live, the fact that I get better options than the silver members because I pay gives me incentives. And incentives is what Sony has to look into to make people pay for it's service. Free online play for all, but if you pay, you can get free PS1 games or early access to PS2 downloads and PSP games? That's something I would pay for.

Paying for online play isn't something that is shocking, it's a bit of a necessity. Servers don't pay for themselves you know.

If you don't want to pay, then just play some singleplayer games. They are just as good.

People that complain about paying, I'm sorry, but it's irritating. I understand that you don't want to pay to play online, but hell, it's old. People have been paying for online play for a long time, You know what bugs the shit out of me?

Microtransactio ns. If Sony was to make a service that replaces these forms of payment with a subscription based service?

Talk about printing money.

there are people who do not want to pay every month because it sort of become like WoW where if you don't play you just feel like you are wasting money so people play even more. A lot of people do not play mmos that you have to pay for because of this believe or not. I want to own the game and not the other way around.

# lulz, pplGuest 2010-02-18 21:57
Hate to break it to ya folks, but in the end, you'll be paying for online gaming.

It is not cheap to maintain server service nor is it cost effective to let people play for free. The hole being burnt through their pockets has to have roughly the diameter of the sun.

Even though its 50 bucks a year, I don't mind paying for XBL. I get what I pay for and more. I do miss out on some Sony games here and there, but i don't mind. The community on XBL beats all else. I couldn't ask for anything else.

Not to mention Natal is coming out at the end of this year and that should really add some excitement to the Xbox 360.

All in all, Sony needs to make a buck too, but if they can keep the online gaming service free, then more power to them. Though you do get what you pay for.
