Pete Hines on Fallout 3: "we want to make games that we like to play" |
Ó
Despite the game's release date practically light years away, Fallout 3 (PC, Xbox 360, PS3) is already one game fans are eagerly awaiting. Bethesda Softworks' Pete Hines talked about following up this epic RPG series and making a sequel that both old fans and new players alike will enjoy.Hines mentioned that a lot of the people in Bethesda were big fans of the Fallout series, and they took a lot of inspiration from this in making the game. He also admitted that continuing a franchise with such a huge fan base was a daunting task that they were willing to take on by keeping the old lore while adding in their own unique take on the game.
One of the things he stressed on was the importance of how they planned to tackle the game and please the Fallout purists:
Our basic philosophy, as silly as it may sound, is that we want to make games that we like to play. That was our big thing on Morrowind and on Oblivion - what kind of Elder Scrolls game would we want to play next, what would be the features of that game, what would it looks like, what would it play like and so on, and that's the game we went out and made. That's the same process we went through with Fallout 3; it goes back to the point that you have to make what you're passionate about...
All of the familiar gameplay elements will still be in the game: the Pip-Boy device, the outlandish Mutants, and even the ever-loving Vault Boy mascot, among other things. As we mentioned in a previous article, Hines reiterated on the new V.A.T.S. combat system that will be implemented as a sort of hybrid of the Oblivion style of combat.
While the game will be taking a page off Bethesda's Elder Scrolls series, Fallout 3 will be much smaller in scale in terms of content. However, considering how huge Oblivion was, this still makes for a pretty big game.
Asides from these small tidbits offered by Hines, he was still pretty tight-lipped on how the new game's plot will run or whether or not they will be any returning characters from the previous series. He assured everyone, however, that they can expect some new content to be out sometime in either February or March of next year.
Hopefully, this won't be the last we'll hear from Hines and the rest of the Fallout team. We'll be sure to keep an eye out for more updates so just stay tuned to us in the meantime.

That is exactly the point of every "REAL" Fallout fan out there. Bethesda is making Fallout 3 how they want it, not how it should be made.
This game will be such a travesty of the original series....
What pisses me off is that the critics will hail it as the best thing since sliced bread, and fools will buy it left and right without even playing the original.
Bethesda will not be receiving my money, and I encourage all to play the original first Fallouts to see what I'm talking about.
