Pedophiles preying in Home!

SCEE acknowledges the situation and explains that since Home is still a beta, it means that all the other features - including moderation and security - are in beta as well. They are trying to adapt and resolve the situation as best as they could. In the meantime, I'm glad that the moderators are doing their job.

More Home news:
  • No pedos please - Image 1

It can't be denied that there are a lot of underage gamers out there who are just as into Home as we are. Unfortunately, though, pedophiles are also very well aware of that fact. Read up on two accounts of alleged pedos at work, and how people like them are making Home a lot less safe for young gamers.

This first account is by one of Gameplayer's writers:

While doing some research on ‘who actually buys HOME clothing’ we happened across a fellow in a cowboy hat (who we'll call 'Jed'). After telling Jed who we were and why we were here doing research, we had an interesting discussion about why he bought the cowboy hat, and virtual belongings in general. Jed told us that he’d done up his apartment with furniture and he invited us over to see it all. Being that it was related to the conversation and the Home research we agreed.

The distant tingle of an alarm bell sounded when I materialized in Jed’s apartment. Everything was super colour-coordinated, ultra chic, and the furniture had been surgically arranged in the room (possibly with a virtual laser level). “Nice feng shui” I mumbled. “I know!” he typed back enthusiastically. It was at this point that I applied this virtual scene to its real life equivalent: I’m currently standing in a trendy house with a cowboy (who, just now, has decided to halve my personal space) and we’re talking about the sensible placement of his furniture.

Houston, we may need to abort...

Sensing an awkward lull in the conversation Jed and I discussed interests, hobbies, and ages (he 'said he was over thirty', and out of journalistic curiosity I told him that I was younger than I am. I said I was 15). This was a colossal mistake. What happened next all but confirmed the sum of all fears: “do you have a cam? I’d like to c u in the flesh” Jed asked, moving in to ‘lap dance distance’. That’s right folks, Jed-o was something of a pedo.

This next one is by Gamespot forum user Modus_Operandi. This one's a lot creepier than the last one.

I was watching my sister testing out Home with my PSN account. She was chatting (via text) with some random guy. "What's your name," "Where you're from," "How old are you," that kind of stuff...

Well my sister is 14 and this guy says he's 21. From out of nowhere he says "wanna ****?" My sister became disgusted and typed remarks like "wtf, omg" and suddenly the all-powerful Locust_Star magically appears...

If you've seen him before, he's basically a bald guy wearing a black long sleeve. Anyway he tells the guy making harassing remarks to keep it clean then he disappears (mods = invisible). The guy didn't knew who Locust was so he ignored him.

Locust pops out of nowhere and I believed he suspended that guy since the avatar immediately went away. Then my sister's Home avatar literally teleported to some other area of the Plaza with Locust and he asked my sister if she knows how to report. The guy was still harassing my sister via PSN messages though (on my account too -_-).

I have a little sister as well, so I definitely don't want her running into those freaks. There's still a chance you can give the guys the benefit of the doubt, though. Might be just some bored folks messing with you, but with all that effort..?

these are prolly just teens

messin with people. 99% of things people say in home are fake, including their gender. You can't take these accounts as proof that pedos are in home. That said, wanna ****?

by Metal Jody - 2009-01-09 13:19
hmm

i wonder is moderators can track these perverts down and have them arrested. the law could find a good use in HOME.

by Silver-Tiger - 2009-01-09 13:38
...

I will get voted down for this but this is another example that Home and Second Life are very similar. Second Life had the same problems back when it was popular.

The difference here is that you can't create child chars in Home, if it is bad or good is up to you. (I mean the creation of child avatars, not the pedo part.)

by papajag - 2009-01-09 13:44
NOOOOOO!!!!!

I use Home to sell weed.

by leq - 2009-01-09 14:00
hmm...

If this site was a little bit bigger, I think Michael Jackson would have to do some serious suing

by ~~ - 2009-01-09 15:28
~~

solution is simple really,

report, track down person's identity, ban 4 life, if this is possible ofcourse...

just, block his PS3 from accessing the internet or something and be done with it.

there should be a no tolerance policy on this, even if they are teenagers having a laugh, this kind of behaviour should not be tolerated.

by DarkXCloud - 2009-01-09 15:48
selling weed?

Hmmm... Maybe I should ask a couple friends to do that too XD

by xploren - 2009-01-09 15:49
papajag...

Psst... come meet me in the further right corner of the mall from the door... and keep it quiet.

well

at least when i'm pretending to be a pedophile, i make it very obvious that i'm only pretending

by Justingraziano - 2009-01-09 17:53
ageist

"It can't be denied that there are a lot of underage gamers out there who are just as into Home as we are." Apperently QJ is ageist. Oh and why did you use Michael Jackson's image for this article? Do you not know that he was found NOT GUILTY on all child molestation charges brought against him? He is a good man and just because a ton of morons went after him for his money and made up stories, everyone thinks he's bad.

by sesa - 2009-01-09 19:01
Wow

Maybe I could pull a prank or two on those pedophiles by claiming I'm 15 too

by narutosaiyan - 2009-01-09 20:40
lol

thats funny, whats he gonna do ur on the internet!? plus Home is no different than myspace or facebook, infact it doesnt share any personal info. the fact is someone pulled a prank on u...its kinda dumb the way ppl act i agree, but we live in a world infested by idiots... home is made to be a social place, like an online chat but looks way cooler. Now im not a parent, but i think evry 1 knows that gamers r all ages. dont act surprised if ur kid is chating with a 25 yr old. IM just saying, u buy kids rated M games n u expect them not to b aware of things? Some parents dont let their kids use online chats, n this isnt any different. if u dont want ur kid exposed to it than put a password on it. dont blame sony blame urself. personally i think that if ur 8 yr old kid is a pro at GTA4 n u think Home is a problem, than u need to see a psychiatrist. if u wanna protect ur kid 4 what evr reason, dont let them get on home its that simple, u cant expect sony to ban evry 1. theyll just make new ACCs. you cant always protect kids 4rom the real world tho...just saying...

by norm851 - 2009-01-09 21:51
why?

to log into home you must be at least 18 ?

or at least agree in the digital paperwork that you are indeed 18 or over.

so if these little bastards get backed into a screwed up situation. its their fault.

plus its not like you cant just block communications form someone who is bothering you.

if they break the contract by telling lies about their age just to get on and play with the "big kids" then its only logical to assume that their fragile little minds are going to be hurt trying to contend in the bloody gruesome world of late teens and young adults.

"where sex sells and tit and ass jokes reign supreme"

maybe

sony could sell flashers raincoats on home!!

by SonnySoul - 2009-01-10 00:55
Come on guys...

It's a bit out of order how you have a picture of Michael Jackson alongside this article.

by Uberoth - 2009-01-10 01:58
In europe

It's sixteen

by celebv1 - 2009-01-10 03:42
mmhm, not surprising

sony will make millions selling the ps3 to the..."different" people. i do believe sony will take eventual action against this, such as temporary IP bans, or even payment deductions. Home REPO PEOPLE! still, doesnt really matter how many creeper IP's they ban, or how much they do against people, its going to happen, and no ammount of age control will suffice. I think, sony needs to more advertize that Home IS ON THE INTERWEBS! dont think many parents realize that Home is on the internet, and so these people are too. its almost worse than real life harrassment, because they come right into your home through Home. (no pun intended)

by Justingraziano - 2009-01-10 04:43
..

It's 13 which is why Home has tons of cencors and stuff.

by StingBlah - 2009-01-10 04:48
have kind of an off-topic, wierd question...

Is everyone who is using Home in the same "home"? Or are there different homes that look identical? I would think that if the 17 million ps3 owners in the world who are on psn have access to home, it would be a bit more crowded? I would say at any given time there are 120 people in home, if that.

by Nine_Masquerade - 2009-01-10 05:43
PEDO BEAR!!

I swear I didn't know she was 3.

by Justingraziano - 2009-01-10 06:37
...

I think everyone is on a different server. Like maybe the first 100 thousand PSN accounts goto one server, the next to another, etc. Not everyone is on the same one, or it would be too crowded.

by b2dub2 - 2009-01-10 18:08
weed..

I bet if you tried sellin weed on HOME, Locust would appear and offer them a better deal! Sony would take all our cash if they could.

by NakedFaerie - 2009-01-10 22:19
pervs

This is the reason I have no speach and no text in Home as its more enjoyable when there is no prevets trying to chat me up every 5 seconds. Also my daughter loves to run around in Home and she's only 5. This is why I have no text, no matter what they say I dont get to see it so I dont care.

I just hope $ony dont put in any rude moves as that will just spoil it. I think they should already take out the dancing as thats just wierd seeing 1 guy dancing with himself in the middle of a crowd of people.

Well, I think Home is crap anyway. $ony have a lot of work to do before it becomes anything good.

by Matt-N - 2009-01-10 23:47
!

You think Sony should remove the dancing from HOME because YOU think it looks strange??? I think Sony should remove you from HOME for being miserable!

by damonous - 2009-01-11 03:00
Everyone is on different server

Justingraziano is correct. A few weeks back, my friends and I (all from the same geographical region/nearby cities) logged-in for a 'Home game-launch test' with Warhawk. Before doing the sensible thing (meeting in my 'Home'), we were trying to find each other in the Central Plaza. While 2 or 3 of us were in one Central Plaza, another friend was in *another* Central Plaza (ie: different server). That's when the 'invite to your location' feature is necessary. We were able to bring our other friend into the same Central Plaza/server. .......on-topic: I hope that they eventually restore the Voice Chat, but as a 'token'-type system (where you have to give someone permission to talk to you, or are able to remove permission). I think this could go a good ways toward preventing pedophile action. You can more easily tell by one's voice if they're older or not.
