Paul Wedgwood on bringing PC-level depth to consoles |
Ó
Paul Wedgwood is known for his proficiency with PC gaming, but now he wants to bring that skill into console gaming. While PC gaming fans would insist that theirs is the better platform, Wedgwood believes in the future of consoles. To Paul Wedgwood, it would be his personal mission, rather than a profitable strategy, to accomplish such a task. "We're at that moment where the PC, PS3, and 360 are aligned in power for the first time in a really long time," he said. "We can focus on developing technology where we only have to create maps once, a character once, and have them work for all three platforms."
About the biggest challenge to merge the PC and consoles, he says, is merely the control interface. Imagine trying to micro-manage on a PS3 controller. Right now, Wedgwood sees increasing similarity between consoles and the PC.
Arguably, and this is not to dismiss what people have achieved in the past, but Halo 3 multiplayer is really Quake 3 from 1999. Even Call of Duty 4 (PS3, Xbox 360) is just Counter-Strike on the PC from 2001. So there's an amazing amount of depth that could be present on consoles.
With the kind of power that consoles have right now, Paul Wedgwood isn't far from his goal. The intent is both revolutionary and profitable, and I hope to see the titles that he'll be producing. More on the interview in the source link.

I think they already partly do it like he's imagine (create maps once, etc.). I don't think that they redesign the GTAIV-world for all platforms. It's easier and fast to convert them.
In two years, the pc hardware will be so strong, that he'll forget his dreams of doing one product working on all platforms.
But why does he want to bring the pc games to consoles? I like exclusive games *hehe
maps are designed in 1 format, and then exported into different formats
the fact is, devleopers tend to create their own format, so maps can be interchangable, just setup/installing would be different
1 thing that consoles have over pcs, is the only hacks will be hardware, fairly little can be done, (software hack get banned from psn/live), things like turbo etc would be th eonly problem, not much when compared to PC CHEATS, so this is the only reason why i buy consoles, (also i prefer to have gaming seperate from the computer, having to boot up into windows can be a pain)
anyway maps can be designed on pc, or keyboard with ps3, so really developers are only to blame (sony aswell)
the only problem with interchangable maps would be, if one consoles version is dramtically different, for exampl ps3 to wii, well can you imagine running ps3 games on the wii, i cant
but this could be easily done, by limiting polygons, through an automatic process
ALL IN ALL THERES NO PRACTICAL REASON WHY THIS ISNT ALREADY BEING DONE
Yup Yup the pc hardware will be SOOOOO strong stronger than the consoles in 2 years time and who knows maybe affordable too! I mean look at Rage that game has the looks of the power of the PS3 but its using the full power of the PC including Quad Cores and nvidia's 280 :)
Considering you have three systems with conflicting hardware, and one of which outsells the other two but has PS2 type hardware.... This is by far the worst generation for these things. I primarily use the PC for gaming. Sure a couple games come later but usually they are optimized for the system and run and look better. Not to mention the mods. Considering the consoles are turning into PCs, why then do people bother when they could just go PC and be done with it? I advise anyone new to PC to learn the hardware, and to learn how to purchase and install ( build your own machine ). newegg is good in the states, NCIX is good in Canada for buying parts.

what a friggin looney
Halo3 and COD4 are masterpieces that have surpassed (content and presentation) a huge proportion of all games available when they were respectively released. the amazing amount of depth is already available on consoles. maybe if we all stick our faces off of our puny laptop screens we could see it clearly.
and here's my favourite part:
"About the biggest challenge to merge the PC and consoles, he says, is merely the control interface"
oh my goooooooooooooo oooooooooooood
somebody kill me for crying out loud
how about u throw in a keyboard with the console game... would that not solve it for an extra 15-20$, no useless long speeches, and no head-aches?
right...
some people have the wind blowin so far up their stinky tube it starts affecting their brains.
yukh
u know very well a PS3 performance level on a PC would cost a left nut and a kidney. not to mention it's almost impossible on a laptop.
you know what else i have on my consoles that's not available on a pc?? the freedom to choose NO operating system as the oh so annoying and ressource burning windows (whichever it is, just pick ur fave) or user unfriendly yet so cool (whatever) mac.
consoles make less noise, use less power, cost less, perform better for gaming, bring breakthrough technological advancements... u get the idea
gamers go for consoles
spoiled brats with money to burn go for PCs and claim they're just as good as a console
nobody would buy it. Also, a keyboard is not easy to ship. Nor is it cheap to make. A crappy keyboard would only hurt the game. A GOOD keyboard would cost too much. Nobody wants to buy extra stuff for playing games.
The reason I prefer consoles to the PC is that it remains static, that means that you will be still able to play the best new games and your system will be able to handle it 3 years from the time you got it.
With the PC on the other hand if you got the best possible build at the beggining of this generation it would be seriously lagging with the best new games three years later.
Some people don't like using keyboards to play.
Colsoles will always be inferior for FPSes as joysticks are acceleration based. You sacrifice speed for accuracy and accuracy for speed. Mouses don't have to sacrifice anything.
PCs are always going to be better than consoles because the console stays the same while PC hardware is constantly being improved.. PC hardware is also going down in price thanks to the rapid development of new components..
seems like you just bought an ovrpriced pos laptop. Not all of us are dumb. These days the falling econ has + great pc prices. My pc for instance can run comfortable circles around any console and i didnt pay an"arm and a leg" for it.
Fact remains hes fully true about halo and CoD4 its really just new graphics on old tech. IMO FPS are just getting repetative and lame.
But you're also forgetting the fact that on a console, with analogue sticks, you can move at any speed you want, with a keyboard, its the one speed (maybe 2 or 3 if you have a crouch or sprint button).
True, mouses are better than analogue sticks (for aiming), but analogue sticks are better than keyboards (for movement).
