Pachter: Sony can counter Halo 3 with 40GB PS3

80GB Sony PlayStation 3 - Image 1There's no denying that Bungie's Halo 3 will become a powerhouse title in terms of sales when it launches, but Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter says Sony could fight it with an announcement of a US$ 399 40GB PlayStation 3 console.

Pachter made this known to investors in his latest note, saying that the upcoming Tokyo Game Show 2007 could be the perfect venue for it as Sony top cat Kazuo Hirai will deliver a keynote speech.

"We expect the game to be a driver of console sales, and believe that MicrosoftÂ’s unit sales for the 360 could exceed 400,000 in September, the highest figure for a non-holiday month since launch," predicts the veteran analyst.

Though Halo 3 could give the Xbox 360 a boost in sales, Pachter maintains that the totality of hardware sales should remain relatively slow for the industry as a whole. This, however, can be offset by Sony through price cuts.

Pachter explains that if the Sony PlayStation 2 dips to US$ 99 and the 80GB PS3 drops to US$ 499 by Thanksgiving, the industry's hardware sales total just might exceed current estimates. "Should Sony choose to cut prices next week, we think that hardware sales will trend much higher for the balance of the year, and we are prepared to revise our 18% sales growth estimate upward," he concludes.

there is no way that a price drop in the ps3 will come close to fighting halo3, that game is probably be the sole reason if i ever get an xbox2

Sony is going to need another price cut with or without Halo 3 coming, there August sales were pretty bad.

It's funny that you guys haven't posted the August NPD numbers. What are you waiting for? Pachter predictions came out after the NPD numbers.

Here they are:

Nintendo Wii - 403,600 (4.0 million)

Nintendo DS - 383,300 (12.7 million)

Xbox 360 - 276,700 (6.3 million)

PlayStation 2 - 202,000 (39.1 million)

PlayStation Portable - 151,200 (8.3 million)

PlayStation 3 - 130,600 (1.75 million)

» I think...

he is just talking about hardware sales....halo 3 will sell SH*TLOADS of software, but will also drive hardware sales ALOT....he is saying in order to counter/match those hardware sales, Sony needs to drop the price of PS3....regardless of the HDD Size....

» FFVII

What Sony needs is FFVII remake or original story

but in High definition exclusively for PS3 . This would put them on the map.

» True

< TROLL >This is true! Why? Cause Halo 3 is so advanced that it will overheat big time the 360 and cause RROD, a bit like Forza 2 did ;) Some people will be so upset that they will get a PS3... LOL< /TROLL >

I really don't think a PS3 price drop would drastically effect Halo 3 or it's impact. I even wonder why many companies try to compete with the onslaught which is Halo 3. Don't get me wrong, I like the Halo series but I'm at a loss at why it's such a phenomenon but I don't think anyone can doubt the fact that for whatever reason, Halo is huge. That being said it my be a better idea for Sony to drop the price in November so it's a little out of Halo 3's window. Sony definitely needs to do something. I am a current 360 owner and will probably get a PS3 sometime in 08 once their lineup is more solid. The Xbox 360's red ring of death problem is definitely a hit against Microsoft and Sony should have capitalized on that. Unfortunately despite the RROD issues the 360 is still outselling 2 to 1 which I think is a major problem for Sony. In my opinion 08 will be a much better year for Sony but in the long run I do believe Sony and Microsoft's sales may be about even in the end for this generation with of course the casual/family friendly Wii continuing to dominate at it's low price point.

It won't take nearly 12 days to hit 3 million. The game will sell at least one million on day one. It could it 3 in just two or three days

» Sony Has Lost This Round

I think most people know you can get 80GB HDDs for under $50(or under $40 for that matter if you are a good shopper). So why do they charge $100 more for a PS3 with 40GB more of space? I love my PS2 so much I replaced it three times when it broke, as for my PS3, I sold it on Ebay and will never buy another. It can not compete with the XBox 360, even with the new distributed content via Limelight(same company Xbox 360 uses to distribute online content).

» Er...

Like FF13, guaranteed to be PS3 exclusive and coming out next year?

A FF8 remake would be awesome though.

You hit the nail in the head you twit. He's an analyst thats his job, he's suppose to it. Its like telling a gamer to stop being one. Thats what you do, so please STFU.

Also I think he could be on to something. Though in my belief i think Sony should give to rats a.s.s about halo they didn't do it b4 with halo 1 and 2, and trust me i play halo.

» ok...

wow with all the great games on 360, i dont know why anyone would get a ps3 this xmas. Once cool ps3 games start coming out it will be a different story, but thats not happening untill sometime in 08.

I don't think sony is going to sell PS3s for $399 any time soon. I don't think they will re-introduce multiple SKUs either. They like selling bundles.

» Hey

MCS did you know Sony plan to sell the 40GB version soon for $299. Yup you heard me right so i think halo will have competition.
