OPM's rough PlayTV price estimate: US$ 141 - Image 1It's a bit disappointing when Sony announced that PlayTV is not going to be released in North America. We all know that the company is quite known for reversing previous statements to keep consumers on their toes but as of this writing, the broadcast service is still exclusive for Europe.

Anyway, the Official PlayStation Magazine or OPM recently did a rough estimate for PlayTV's pricing. According to the publication, all of the components (Freeview receiver, PVR, and Sling Box) will cost between 60 GBP (US$ 121.21) to 100 GBP (US$ 201.97) when purchased separately.

The good news here is that OPM is saying PlayTV might be priced for just 70 GBP or roughly around US$ 141.37. This is really a neat price considering all the features that the service has. Just to remind you, PlayTV is actually a twin-channel DVB-T tuner accessory that comes with a digital video recorder software.

It allows users to record TV programs on the PS3's hard drive which is quite similar to the service TiVo provides. More excitingly, PlayTV also has the capability to connect with the PlayStation Portable via Wi-Fi for portable entertainment. According to a previous announcement, PlayTV should become available by early 2008.

» very dissapointed

...Oh dear oh dear, Sony are just so missguided when it comes to there pricing plans - in itself PlayTV is such a cool idea... if they think anyone will buy a freeviewbox for the best part of 100 squid though, then they've truley learnt nothing from their already dissapointing sales. Freviewboxes cost around 10 pounds these days! no one will pay that much for this. stupid stupid Stupid. arrogant sony!

» What of the PSX?

I am disappointed... even though I still love Sony and Loyal to it... I am still disappointed... When I heard PSX was released I was so anxious to get my hands on it, but it wasn't out in U.S yet. Until 2005... i heard they stopped the production... I was disappointed... all those technology inside the PSX is almost da same as what the PS3 is doing... but why didn't they make the PS3 media centre like the PSX? Is it cuz of the Blu Ray? Is it cuz they want to finishing making their product to make the consumers buy their products? So what if it is delayed.. I would've waited . even though i am so anxious to get my hands on it but look on da bright side.. I have a PS3 now... ^_^

» This isn't just a freeview box

This uses the ps3 hardrive to turn it into a HDD digital recorder. These things sell for hundreds in Argos. Also you get sling box features in this using the psp.

In all honesty I can't see them selling this for under £100 but if they do then it'll be quality. Shame I can't pick up freeview, lol.

» not bad

i will definetly get this. and get rid of my old HTPC. so i can also see TV on my proyector. and only left the ps3. the less devices the better. and the price tag for a dual tunner is not that bad. if the tunner is good. a media center certified tunner is arround 90€ here in spain.

» Something for us in Europe

I'm glad I live in Denmark, too! I'll buy this tuner, also if the price is about 100£

In the video on YouTube, where Sony was demostrating PlayTV - the man said it will be available in UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. Maybe I'm wrong - but did he said Scandinavia?

» Ugh

What is the point of a DVR device that cannot record anything when you're playing a game on your PS3?

Are they planning on doing 'background downloading' from the tuner to the hard drive? They can't be planning on doing re-encoding of the digital streams while gameplay is going on.

I just don't see it yet.

» Freeview Boxes are cheap BUT

Freeview Recorders are around the £70-£120 mark, especially twin recivers, go on, look it up, grab your nearest Argos catelog or something and look up TWIN recievers. That means you can watch a channel whilst recording another, or record two things and play a game, that's good pricing for once.

» Dis doesnt make sense!!!!!

Dis PVR device costs 141 bux and PS3 costs 600 bux.. together its about 741 bux ( i knw dis isnt first grade math class... lol.) ... PSX used to cost around 750 bux or so... how come they stop production of the PSX?? If it didnt work out then they should've saved some part of it into a PS3 instead of wasting time making accessories for PS3... but its nice to have these accessories while PS3 doesn't have a TV tuner and all... but all dat hardware dat was in da PSX should be inside da PS3...... such hot stuff... well... I hope what Ken Kutragi.. our Ex Sony President of Playstation can deliver a PS3 media centre dat he promised us.. it would be good to have it all in one instead of buying each equipment... we dont have to play games and record at da same time...... I have a Comcast Digtal Box with DVR and I set up time and all to copy da programs that i will miss while i am busy doin whateverit is i am doin... well.. i am still loyal to Sony cuz of their hot technology... ^_^

by Bruce - 2007-08-31 06:31
» sooner or later`

Sooner or later it wont be exclusive anymore... ^_^

by Bruce - 2007-08-31 06:38
» The point is.......
