OPM: new Trophy reward system in the works?

Sony Having a nice, shiny platinum trophy sitting on your XMB is nice, but what if you actually got something more out of that trophy than just being nice and shiny? How about early betas, or exclusive wallpapers?

The latest issue of OPM says that SCEA is considering some sort of reward system for getting trophies:

We've heard that SCEA is mulling over some sort of Trophy reward system. We doubt it'll be cash (or the equivalent), but we suspect it might be exclusive access to early betas and the like.

What ever happened to trophies being their own reward? Just kidding. I'd love freebies with my platinum trophies. Beta invites especially. No more having to pre-order games, no more having to go to websites that offer beta keys only to find out that it was slashdotted. All I have to do is get them trophies, which I plan to do anyway.

» Trophies are nice and all but..

we don't get anything except bragging rights for getting them. When you get a certain amount of trophies, you should be rewarded with the ability to get whatever you want off of the store for free. For example, for X number of trophies you get, you could get a $29.99 game for $0.

That would make it worthwhile. I had fun getting trophies, but the urge to get them kind of dwindled when you realize that all you got was the trophy itself, and nothing more.

by rebel101152 - 2008-10-20 09:33
» no point....

Yeah I find them kind of pointless.it was fun trying to get them but now im like...ok what do i do with this thing?(brag of course but no more than that.)

we need some kind of reward system thats worth playing for.....

by DontCryIfYouDie - 2008-10-20 09:38
» well...

the trophy system was originally intended to be just for home so you could display them, but since home bin delayed, suppose they decided to put this trophy system until home is released.

» good thinkin

a reward system for the reward system

by Musev - 2008-10-20 09:52
» ..

Maybe they should start making sure games support trophies

by spicyhamster - 2008-10-20 10:10
» lol free games?

i dont think so man. theres no way in hell they'd do that, and honestly, we don't need to be rewarded for playing something we paid for. i'm all for rewards, but you need to get real, they're not going to come in the form of cash.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Finally! A worthwhile reason to work for these things!

Free games would go a bit far, but I could imagine getting rebates or early Beta access. Something like that would definitely outflank the achievements of the 360. Then again, we all know Micro$oft, I would be no 2 weeks before they copy this.

» avatars

I think if they did something like this they should give you new avatars and themes and things like that. the themes and avatars should have something to do with the game you got that trophy on.

by emcp - 2008-10-20 10:34
» lol

NO NO NO

i dont want free games for trophies, because you know if playstation did that, it is going down

however, maybe something like betas, or a wallpaper maybe even a qore magazine, but that would be the most

also ive got 5 bronze trophies just, 3 of which i got for warhawk training lol

i hate warhawk yet its the only game that supports trophies so, mmm you know

by nikko03 - 2008-10-20 10:35
» hmm

id be very happy if they could include trophies with EVERY game instead of a select few...it pisses me off that they can make achievements for EVERY 360 game but completely leave out most ps3 games...it cant be that hard. but yea id just be fine with that allthough the rewards would b a plus

by CHUCKINGROCKSATSPACESHIPS - 2008-10-20 10:51
» Free games would be good but...

I highly doubt they would give us free games. The reward for playing games are opening items and levels in the game by beating certain objectives.

by CHUCKINGROCKSATSPACESHIPS - 2008-10-20 10:58
» to emcp

Warhawk is not the only game supporting trophies out right now.

by emcp - 2008-10-20 11:06
» damn

left out,

the only game i have

i couldve swear i typed that lol, my bad

by emcp - 2008-10-20 11:08
» mm

good idea

but would this not maybe be something that could be incorporated with games and not a sony reward system

however sony would then need to make the avatars possible

by ISOHaven - 2008-10-20 11:17
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

While I doubt "free games" would ever happen, it also WOULD NEVER be the "end" of the PS3. Are you freaking kidding me? Such a high end reward would cause a major upswing in not only console purchases but also GAME purchases.

Anyway, the reason it would never happen is because of the shear amount of users. The "output" would be unknown. Based on that alone no one would approve the promotion.

by Xis - 2008-10-20 11:22
» exlusive DLC most likely

considering I knew nothing about achievments thats what i thought Xbox had get achievments and get points for the store but I think you'll get exlusive DLC for that game or from that company for another game or a Sony DL fom the store the novelty rewards are (can be) limitless I'm for it its like a game carnival or the chucky cheeses of gaming get tickes and get a downloadable giant stuffed Purple elephant

by ISOHaven - 2008-10-20 11:23
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Hum...what about:

Offer PAID DLC content to platinum holders for free? That way the money choice stays with the publisher and not Sony.

It doesn't have to be ALL DLC for a game. It could just be certain items.

by BULL3TPR00F - 2008-10-20 12:44
» NOPE

These sorts of things will never work. For any game that is retroactive (so far i dont think any are, and im not sure if any will be in the future), someone can just download a save file and then BOOM, free trophies and extra stuff.

As long as its not retroactive it could possibly work.

by NarooN - 2008-10-20 13:20
» retroactive

No one even makes them retroactive to begin with. It COULD work. Like I said, a certain number of trophies, not juts like for every 20 or 30. Maybe every 100 trophies or so.

And yeah, like someone up above was sayin, this would just INCREASE sales. Activity on PSN would soar even more. Do you know how many Trophy-Addicts are out there? Same amount as Achievement Fiends.

» "considering" is the keyword

Levels could give us VIP access to normally inaccessible stuff. For exemple, it could give us an hidden car in motorstorm, or a new costume in uncharted...

But I think that the best they could do is by letting us use those levels to buy PSN stuff. For an exemple, 10 levels could be used to buy a playstation classic, or any other downloadable game that cost around the same, or even rent movies on their movie servive, etc. 2 levels could mean 1$ on the PSN to spend =D.

Without thinking about money, they could give Beta keys to people who are level X or more only.

They could give promotionnal stuff for each 5 levels, starting at level X. Let's say level X is 30, then at level 30, 35, 40, etc, you would get a promotionnal something, like a t-shirt that you could choose in a list (promoting games like uncharted, motorstorm, god of war, naruto ninja storm, etc).

But THIS is the easiest answer: They could give freebies inside HOME for each level (something for acheiving level 2, 3, etc). This would promote HOME, sony, the games of sony, and everything linked to home, including the PSN.

What I'd want?;

I'd like a VIP access to level X and more in Home and on the PSN. For exemple, those VIPS could have access to locked places in Home (for an exemple, I'd like if those VIPS could talk with the devs at the launch of a new game, like when the movie stars are interviewed, but this time, by the fans. A rude behavior in those situation would ban the user from the VIP rooms in HOME, but not for the PSN version of the VIP club). And for the PSN, the VIPs would have a diffferent color in the background of the PS store (gold, with the letters VIP written somewhere) and would get more stuff, like exclusive wallpapers, behind the scene videos, maybe beta keys, themes, and maybe a reduction of 10% one selected days in the year, I don't know).

Maybe we could replace "level X" with "X level(s) gained in the last month" so we would have to defend our VIP title with a flow of trophies. 10 trophies per month would be good, or er two months. This way sony would make us buy those PSN games that have trophies, lol.

What do you think?

by nikko03 - 2008-10-20 15:09
» hmm

some prety good ideas there platon i could actually see sony incorporating that with home seeing as trophies were meant for home anyways. but only time will tell

» o my

I've seen this going on for 2 long now with the custom firmware for PSP and now Trophies for PS3... Yes they should do something as a reward for the trophies but only if for example if You play War-Hawk and you get a certain amount of Trophies they'll let u download one of the add-on contents like the omega add-on and what ever and if it's like uncharted you unlock new costumes like who ever said up their and unlock new guns etc. lol but don't be stubborn and try say they should b given out games and stuff for a certain amount of Trophies because it's unrealistic to do that. Not because of n.e thing like they fail because that will actually bring in more players in the run especially your getting free games and stuff while your playing games and on top it's free to use PSN unlike XBL but its only because they game creators wouldn't work with those conditions but the only thing is stuff like how they say you get extra better things with the games you buy brand new now you get something in it like NBA Lives updating system and Gears 2's 5 maps from #1 but they can maybe if they get ubisoft to go with it they can get you to be able to download the playstation one version of prince of persia when u get a certain amount of trophies for the game

those types of things

by Dr_Olaf - 2008-10-20 17:51
» That would be awesome...

...but it would be cool connecting it to the "Level", which is completly useless at the moment.

And you shouldn't get something for free which you would normally have to pay for, the key term here is "exclusive content", like for example exclusive...

...clothing/ decoration/ furniture in Home

...Avatars for your gamer profile

...access to levels

...wallpapers and designs

...access to certain home spaces

...Downloads from the PS Store (Trailers, making of's...)

and so on... And all that could be tied to the "Level", like "a special T-Shirt for Home is rewarded to players with Level 5 or above" and so on.

just my two cents

by Esaar - 2008-10-20 18:01
» give it time.

Just give it time. They will be mandatory soon enough. The reason Sony didn't make them mandatory is because tons of PS3 games were already under development or near completion when trophy support went live. If Sony had insisted that all future games include trophies, they would lose money on many games about to be released since the publishers would refuse to include trophies in a nearly finished product.

Now that trophy support has been around for a while publishers have had ample time to anticipate mandatory trophy support for their future games and they will arrive soon enough.

What are you talking about? There already are avatars.. just crappy ones

anyway we should be able to choose our own avatars from whatever we want imo not those pre selected sony ones

by Dr_Olaf - 2008-10-21 08:16
» furthermore...

Just came to my mind: It would be cool if unlocked Trophies had a "preview pic" like Games, i.e. A full-screen hd-background image, and a small animation or still picture, when you select them in XMB.

I agree that I would like to use my own image for an avatar, but imagine all the immature idoits who would think it funny to use goatsee as their avatar. Then think about the fuss the over-protective child-proof-the-world groups would make over their little Johnny being exposed to that. Sony doesn't need that headache.
