Olympic Hopeful Uses Street Fighter IV for Training - Image 1

This is just the best training regimen ever. Tyrone Robinson, a British Olympic hopeful and bronze medalist in a recent European Taekwondo championship, has included Street Fighter IV (PS3, 360) as part of his training to improve his mental abilities, speed up his reflexes, and power up his hadoukens. Well, not that last one. Says Robinson:

I'm never going to be able to throw fireballs in the ring like the characters in Street Fighter IV, but I can still try some of the crazy kicks they do. It's a good way to relax at the end of a hard day's training and great to have a tournament with friends.

Taekwondo coaches actually support the training, saying that it's good mental rehearsal, and dramatically improves results in the field. Des Blackburn, performance analyst for Great Britain Taekwondo, believes that the game is an ideal mental trainer:

To complement their physical training our athletes are also encouraged, in their spare time, to play this type of game, as it is known that doing so can increase their attention span, depth perception and hand-eye coordination; though this is always recommended as an addition to their physical training and never as a replacement.

Now let's hope guys like Jack Thompson won't use this as another murder simulator argument.

Sounds a bit like the sort of excuse I used to say to my teachers when I told them I was playing Street Fighter II on SNES all night instead of doing my homework.

Looking back, I really should have done a lot more of my homework and got good grades.
