Official Playstation Magazine Editor To Buy 360, Not PS3 |

OPM editor Dana Jongewaard recently stated on her blog why she intends to get a 360 instead of a PS3 first this November. Contrary to what most people may think, magazine editors usually do not receive free hardware for their own personal use. This means that even people like Dana Jongewaard need to make their decisions like every ordinary gamer. And as far as it goes for Dana, she's all set for a 360 purchase. Not because she finds "the concept of a $600 console insulting", higher launch prices are, in Jongewaard's opinion, inevitable - but simply because it's hard "to justify shelling out that kind of money" when she can get a competitor's console for half the price. Of course, the PS3's going to get the big exclusive blockbusters sooner or later - MGS4, FFXIII - but certainly not too soon after launch, at least according to her.
Another big reason for Jongewaard: Her modest demands for audio-visual quality. She doesn't care for BluRay, still having "a crummy 12-year-old 21-inch very-non-hi-def TV" at home. "I don't care if it's mono, stereo, 5.1, 7.1--I really don't care how high-res the picture is, (...) as long as it has color and is free from static, I'm good to go."
Of course, it's not like Dana Jongewaard doesn't want a PS3 - but for her, $600 is simply not worth it yet. And with the PS3 in her office instead, it's not like she'll be missing out on all the fun - you could just say she's getting the best of both worlds...

Well from the sound of it. This guy seems pretty poor. So i could care less. He has a job that makes more money than me (atleast i hope he does) and ill already have more than enough money for a PS3. I also already have an xbox360. Its not like the system is that much money. If a kid worked at a grocery store for like 4 weeks he could make more than enough for PS3. Also i dont care if he doesnt get one. More chances for me to get one at launch.

Apparently killfox here does not realize it's not a man, and $600 IS a lot of money. And a kid that works at a grocery store does not have other expenses to worry about, working adults do.

Wow, great "official" news that is important for all of us to know about the upcoming PS3. How could we ever go on without knowing about someone's decesion on buying a console. Everyone has their opinion on what they want, even a OPM staff memeber (now I hope people will stop complaining about how biased the magazine is). Its just goes to show though the type of news they like to present here: FUD.
As the saying goes "to each there own". I just don't like how this article is specefically trying to instigate flames and spread FUD.
Another person who's either too cheap or too poor to buy the PS3. Fine, it's not like her spurned PS3 unit will be sitting on a store shelf all lonely and rejected.

Ok your job is the editor of a major gaming magazine. First of all, she probably makes plenty of money. Not that she is rich ballz, just doing fine. I am a univ. student that washes cars for a living. I pay all my own bills and have financial aid for tuition. Ill be in line for a PS3 on the 17th and dont understand why she wont. Yes you have a choice, but at how important to her job it is for her to own one of each, youd think she would own them all. Main points of what I am trying to say
- its important to her job for her to have everyones hardware
- comparitively to what she probably makes, she could easily afford them all.

I agree that until we know there's awesome games out for the PS3, why risk the money? I'm a Sony fan myself, but the X360 is showing up as a pretty strong system, and the Wii has a ton of promise, as does Sony. But I want to know that if I pay for ANY console, I'll get a ton of awesome games to choose from.
Maybe when the PS3's library gets a bit stronger I'll pitch the cash. And no, $500 isn't a lot for a console compared to, say, an iPod. But if I spend cash on a console, I want it to be the best one with the best promise of games. I guess I'm just going to wait for another few months AFTER the other 2 systems (Nintendo and Sony) launch.
And it pisses me off that people think they HAVE to get the $600 system over the $500. For Christ's sake, if you don't need an HDMI connection (which no one will until 2011), then get the system that's $100 less! Sheesh!
(and yeah, someone's gonna say 'why don't you get the system that's $300?' Yeah, that's a possibility, too, but I still think it's a good idea to wait and compare them to determine 'value')

She is comparing the cheapest 360 to the most expensive PS3, which I think is a bogus comparison, yet technically accurate. MS has been using this comparison ever since the PS3 price was announced, so I find it kind of ironic that a Playstation editor would do the same thing, lol.

I agree with her, the only difference is I am an audiofile, i have the big hd tv 7.1 ht system but i will not buy the ps3 for the BD, its a new format that i dont trust, look at hd-dvd they have a better video compresion that makes the video so much better. so i will not buy a ps3 when it comes out i have to see how the system goes and if any games come out for it since it seems that publishers are stopping production on games or they're just not going to be ready when launch. and the saying you can ps2 games on it. i already own a ps2 i dont need to play ps2 games on a ps3, i dont need to play movies on my ps3 that why i have a dvd player and when i decide on which is better hd-dvd or blueray i will buy one of those not a ps3 for that. if you buy a ps3 for bd capabilities you get what a $600 BD, not very good. actually she has pretty valid points. its understandable to not want to spend that much money on a console that doesn't have very many games yet. especially since the 1st gen systems probably have a higher chance of being defective. Also, wi-fi and HDMI are not the only reasons to get the $600 version.. how about a bigger HD, since you can't upgrade the 20 gig?

Your analogy is a horrible one simply because if you work at a restaraunt i'm sure you will get tired of your store's food and will want some variety so i'm sure there are millions of mcd employees that go out and buy bk or even pizza hut. My point is a little variety in life is not a bad thing and if you are so close minded that you arent open to try out new things than i bet you have missed out on many of life's pleausures cause you are stuck doing the same crap daily with no diffrence from day to day. I will own all the consoles but no ps3 at launch. I'll wait till the bugs are worked out before spending a week and a half check and ultimately being a beta tester for free.
The only thing that you cannot upgrade on the $500 PS3 is the HDMI. According to Sony you can put in your own SATA HDD's. It sounds like she doesnt really have the right attitude for the profession she is in. This is like an editor of PC Magazine saying they are using their 29 year old Apple 2 and dont feel like buying that new video card, processor, OS, etc. Technology is constantly moving forward and this is the so called "HD-era" where you need 5.1 surround and an HDTV to get the best out of your console. If anything, her point would make much more sense if she were going to buy a Wii given its simplicity. Ideally, the 360 is designed to use Live, HD, and 5.1 audio while the Wii gives you a core gaming experience on any setup.

I find it disappointing that an employee working in a job such as hers (which is something every gamer would dream of) is not interested in buying a PS3. I have been saving for mine for over 6 months in anticipation. Also if u add the cost of wifi to the xbox360 its not a cheap investment either. PS3 is worth every dollar, I'll sure ppl out there spend double the cost of a PS3 on a PC just to play games.

I was one of the casual gamers, who didn't care about Video Games. I decided to wait a year, before buying my first system since I was 7. By that time, I had money to buy the PS2 and 5 games to go with it. People are going to buy it no matter what, the rest will buy it later.
I'm pretty sure she is going to buy the PS3, because she is waiting and seeing. For not, she's buing a Next-gen system so she won't miss the games coming out for it. When the PS3 starts releasing exclusive games next year ( Final Fantasy, MGS4, Assassin's Creed, plus the countless others), people will start buying like crazy.
For about the first year, Hardcore gamers and Blu-ray buyers, will be buying the system. Even non hardcore gamers who had saved money from the begining, will buy it. What I want to know is why do the other fanboys, complain about the price, when they are not gonna buy it in the first place? If you don't want it, then fine. Whay the hell are people dissing her decision because she's a gal gamer? Ive 2 good friends of mine who are both gals, have different taste's in gaming. One owns a PSP and the other owns a DS.
Besides the PS3 has a MUCH better lineup than the 360's at launch. I already have a good PC so why should I buy a 360, most of the good games and only one exclusive Dead Rising intrests me (not even Halo 3 does). I cant wait for Warhawk, MotorStorm, Resistance, Mercenaries 2 and MGS 4!
Yes the PS3 is expensive but when you buy it, its going to last you more than 6 years. Thats $600, technically $100 a year. Now im quite the PC gamer and every 3 years I spend about $400, so the PS3 is technically beter value, though my PC does much much much more.
I dunno buying either console is personal prefrance.
The PS3 is just soo mighty tempting, and when you look at the games comming out to for and all its harware specs on paper you cant help but feel the mighty price is justified.
Hell when the PS3 gets a modchip, or someone finds a hardware or firmware exploit, im going to be in heaven with the 60gb Hard Drive.

Anyway, I agree that people shouldn't attack her decision just because she's a women, or because she's the editior of OPM. In the end, it's her choice (she gives other reasons too in the comments section).
I don't buy your arguement that you don't need a 360 if you have a good gaming PC, because the games I'm mostly interested in are not on the PC (Forza 2, Halo 3, Gears of War, Mass Effect, etc).
But you're right when you say it's down to personal preference, since I have no interest in any of the PS3 games you mentioned except for MGS4 and possibly Resistance. :)
Anyway, I'm waiting for a possible price cut or a better valued bundle before I purchase a 360, and I'll be doing the same for the PS3 (which means I'll probably get one by the end of 2007 at the earliest).
Currently no interest in the Wii either (sorry Nintendo).

Like many, she was probably waiting for news about the PS3. We got that at E3, and for some the price is too high (yes you get what you paid for, but it is still high).
Therefore the 360 is a 'next best' option for those unwilling to spend $499/$599 for the PS3, especially this Christmas.
Ok, what I find most revealing is that this is the editor of a video game magazine and she doesn't have or care about HDTV or even stereo? Let alone Dolby Digitial Surround in games? She has a 12 year old 21" TV?

If that's true and she isn't exagerating to make a point, then I say she doesn't need even the 360. There are plenty of good Super NES games that will run and play just fine in her set up (well maybe that's overkill for her since Super NES had stereo, hmmmm...)

I'm planning on getting a 360 and PS3, yet I don't have a High-def TV either.
HDTV will enable you to enjoy next-gen games at their best because of the resolution and sound, but resolution doesn't make great games, it doesn't even make better graphics (in terms of content), just better graphics in terms of clarity.
So it's not an absolute requirement in order to enjoy next-gen gaming, hence a 360 (or PS3) will be fine on her 21" standard TV.
That said, I do plan on purchasing a HDTV early next year. :)

Many people agree that she is just saying this to get attention. Attention for herself, her blog etc. She is not paid to have or support the PS3 and like most of us, she is out for her own self interest - she has now become the most famous OPM Mag editor of all time.
As expected, her blog entry had some major flaws. Being that she works for OPM (but oddly most readers never heard of her until now), is amazing to me she is comparing the PS3's 600 dollar machine with the 360' 400 version. Clearly she wasn't told that the $500 has everything the 360 has and then some. I expect this from fanboys/girls but not from a professional magazine editor. She goes on to state that she will be able to get a Wii and a 360 for the price of a PS3. Huh? 400 + 250 (rumored price) = 650. 500 does not equal 650. Again she didn't get the memo. If MS decides to create 360 bundles that have included a HDDVD, would that mean that their 400 version would disappear? Well is incredible how most ps3 critics have pretty much erased the 499 ps3 from existence.
Another major flaw of her argument is she doesn't have the gear for the next generation. Why in the world, if you don't have the gear, would you jump into the next gen? Games are still coming out for the PS2 stick with that. Hey why not even get a Wii, that's not next gen but new gen. She mentions paying $400 for a 360 for roughly the same experience as a PS3 but she could easily pay 0 (most likely already owns a ps2) or $250 as she doesn't have the equipment to experience these next gen machines. She should save her money and buy a good TV with a audio system while she's at it to get the full Next Gen experience or else don't bother. It's almost like saying, "I don't need an Ipod because I'm death but I will get a cd player because is cheaper".

i even have friends that have went from hd to regular tv. cuz they didnt find the need to pay extra for channels they didnt even watch and the mamoth tv in there living room just tookup space!

You misunderstood what I said. What I said was, the PS2 was my first system I bought, since I bought a Sega Genesis when I was 7. I was born in 89 and I'm 17 years old, so I do know about Sony and PS2.

I am nobody's fanboy, and I'm proud of that. I only bought a 360 last week. For madden, nhl, forza 2, and gears of war. I won't be buying a PS3 or Wii at launch, because that would be a waste of money (plus, I'm doubting whether sony will even make a november launch). There are no games that justify the prices. I will wait a while like I did with the 360, but I will definitely get all 3 systems when there are games to warrant the price.
