The 7th Game Developer's Choice Awards - Image 1The tallies have been counted and the finalists have been singled out. Capcom Entertainment and Clover Studio's (though sadly, now dissolved) Okami and Bethesda Game Studios and 2k Games' The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (coming out on  PC, the X360, and PS3) bagged four nominations each, including being finalists in the category Best Game. This puts both titles ahead of all other nominees, of which thousands were submitted from all over the globe.

The Game Developer's Choice Awards will determine this year's Best Game at the Esplanade Ballroom of the Moscone Center's South hall on March 7, 2007. Developers from all over the world will finally see the recipients of the assortment of GDC awards lined up for this year.

Also taking place is the Independent Game Festival Awards, whose recipients will also be announced at the same ceremony. Tim Schafer from Double Fine Productions is lined up to host the GDCA while Andy Schatz of PocketWatch Games will host the IGFA.

Now we know that both games are great, despite being available for different platforms. But like we said before, not everyone can vote or nominate their favorite games. Yes, like the award ceremony's title implies, only the developers' thoughts count.

Who will bag the ultimate prize? Well, stay tuned to find out.

# Killzone 2 versus Halo 3: The Final Discussion, periodGuest 2007-02-06 17:30
When these 2 games were released,

- Resistance was known as the most technologically achieved game; most sophisticated, 40 player online mode, extremely huge maps, maintaining perfectly silky smooth frame rate at all times even when the action is hottest

- Gears of War was known as the prettiest game in terms of graphics

Most technical Vs. Best graphics, and the winner was GoW; GoW took the crown by huge gap

- GoW got average review scores of 94/100 from 131 different game publications and magazines

- Resistance got 89 from 74 publications

If Sony wants to have the halo-killer application, then they must have done the followings, otherwise Killzone 2 has no chance of winning.

(1) Killzone 2 must have been made from scratch (Killzone 1 was mediocre, so completely throw away the first one into a garbage can, and make a brand new game)

- Killzone 1 got 73/100 from 106 publications

- Halo 2 received 95/100 from 159

(2) Killzone 2 must run in 1080 progressive scan resolution. Sony has announced so many times that 1080p is the only true HD. If Killzone 2 which is one of the most anticipated games of all time runs in 720p, it’s still okay; however, Sony will be seen as some sort of lying bullcr+p.

(3) Sony must learn this basic thing; the online mode is like 10 times more important than the single-player mode.

- Resistance’s single-player (SP) lasts for 12 hours, and that’s extremely long for an FPS; Resistance hasn’t got great review score.

- Halo 2’s SP lasts for about 4 hours, that’s extremely short for an FPS. GoW’s SP lasts for about 5 hours, that’s very short, too. Even an episodic game like Sin Episode’s single-player lasts for 7 hours; however both Halo 2 and GoW got ridiculously f+cking high scores. How about multi-player only games like Counter-Strike Source, Day of Defeat Source, Battlefield 2142, and such? Insomniac shouldn’t have wasted so much time, budget and brain power for SP. The same goes for Killzone 2.

(4) Killzone 2 must choose the art style of other colorful games.

- Resistance and Killzone 1 both had grayish and blend graphics; and game reviews say these are not the good way to go. Halo 2 and GoW have colorful, crisp and bright art styles; and these games received 95/100.

- Halo 2 and Killzone 1 both were released in Nov, 2004. Sony said that Killzone 1 needed about a half a year more development time to polish things up, but they had to release it to counter Halo 2. Killzone 1 was a rushed, unfinished and half-assed game. If Killzone 2 is released like its predecessor, then I’ll pass it.

Based on the following known facts so far, Killzone 2 has some chance of becoming the true Halo 3-killer app.

(1) Biggest amount of budget has been invested for Killzone 2 in Netherlands’ multimedia history.

(2) Total number of programmers and graphics artists

- Guerilla: 120 developers

- Bungie: 90

(3) Sony officially said a month ago that many aspects of Killzone 2’s current version are surpassing what were shown in that famous and infamous E3 trailer.

(4) Sony recruited many foreign developers from around the world; and all these foreign developers are supposed to be elites. Guerilla which is a subsidiary of Sony Corp. in Netherlands now has 120 employees and half of them are from other countries around the world; about 60 people who have made Killzone 1 have been fired; I like this part since Killzone 1 was just mediocre.

So? If it were made for the PS3 first and then ported to the 360, the 360 version would look better too. Shame that the PS3 can't find originality for itself and is basing their line-up on year old cross-platform releases.

Halo is over-rated.

Is reviewers started reviewing the game for what it really is, one crap of single player with a decent multi-player, it would be scoring 80/100 tops.

In comparison to the general FPS games, goldeneye 64 was a better game then halo2.

Why do you people keep *****ing about GoW looking nice? IT'S NOT ALL IT HAD GOING FOR IT. It had some of the absolute best voice acting EVER done in any game. It had some of the best action to ever grace ANY console. You had likeable characters(Yeah , I was bummed when Carmine died) and the multiplayer is top-notch. The graphics are just the icing, you fanboy.

Plus, Halo 2 was longer than four hours if you sat and played it. You can beat Resistance in 5 if you just blow through it.

(1) Biggest amount of budget has been invested for Killzone 2 in Netherlands’ multimedia history.

-----This is the Netherlands, okay? Bungie is an American company with more money to spend.

(2) Total number of programmers and graphics artists

- Guerilla: 120 developers

- Bungie: 90

-----Skill plays a major role in this, and nobody can deny Bungie has some of the best programmers(exc ept fanboys like you.)

(3) Sony officially said a month ago that many aspects of Killzone 2’s current version are surpassing what were shown in that famous and infamous E3 trailer.

-----Bull*****.

(4) Sony recruited many foreign developers from around the world; and all these foreign developers are supposed to be elites. -----So? More people doesn't mean better quality. I'll refer to a sports example, even though you won't understand it. Look at the Heat. They have a powerhouse that is Shaq, but being that he is new to the team they aren't doing good because they don't know each other. That is Sony.

Look at the Pistons, they're the best NBA team for the fourth straight year and don't even have a super-star like Shaq on their side, but they've all played together so long that even though their team is smaller, they beat the Heat because they work best as a team.

I hate that you went through all that time to tell us absolutely nothing.

# heard it in the podcast, fact...Guest 2007-02-06 19:59
they (ign) failed to mention that all the graphical updates theyve done to the game like draw distance and fps will also be fixed in a patch for the 360 version, thus making them identical yet again. besides, no one plays that year old game anymore anyways, its basically scraps that were feeding to the starving ps3 community.

# hes not saying it WILLGuest 2007-02-07 02:24
hes saying it MIGHT IF and only IF sony can pull off a number of things. But you're probably right unless they hype and hype Killzone 2 then it'll NEVER become what halo has become. Not that i reccomend it :P

No link for that claim?

Too bad, because they claim the improvements and due to the cell processor, something that the Xbox360 does not have. So your little claim about the XBox360 version getting a patch is already shot down.

This is about Okami and Oblivion and somehow turned into a Halo3 vs Killzone 2 topic?

More developers = more man power. More man Power = better games.

We all have seen the previews of Halo3, they look like crap. Its a slight upgrade of halo2 and thats pretty much it in terms of graphics. Then the added noob canons, and thast pretty much what the game is targeted to, noobs.

It takes pretty much no skill to play Halo2. One of the reasons why its never in any "real" competitions.
