Nvidia lands mysterious deal with Sony, bigger than PS3 deal

Nvidia Corp. announced on Thursday it has a new design contract with Sony Corp. that will pay more than it earned for creating the graphics processor for the upcoming PlayStation 3 video game console. Nvidia execs say the new deal will run through 2007.

What could this new chip be for? PSP2 maybe? Nvidia maybe be boasting about the deal but they are keeping tight lipped about the details. We can only speculate at this point. But with the huge variety of products Sony market it could be almost anything.

it better not be a psp2..they havent even done much with the first one.. all of us that bought this psp last year have waited so long for some games that are half way decent and we are just now starting to get those games... releasing another system now would be like what sega did with the 32x and segacd when the saturn came out.. that alone is what insured the dreamcast and saturn failures.

in my opinion, it cannot be for the psp2... First of all, to supply all the power for that graphics card, you need alot of battery power. That will be impractical... it will probably run for 2 hrs and a black screen is all you see lol.. talk about portability....

I know about this, by the way the contract is about that Nvidia has found a way to run a cell chip processor on a handhel dvice with overheating and adapted to a handheld device engine , this doesn't mean protable ps3 power cause of the screen size but the graphics could look like xbox360 and similar to the ones from ps3 , and they are planning on releasing it around 2009 and will try and keep people busy with the ps1 emulator coming for the psp , yet the lifespan of the psp seems very short but with those graphics noone will need emulators. And about memory size for games , sony could easily make blu-ray small disks. Ohh and plz don't tell sony I said it , just belive I'm a 11 year old kid who likes to lie , sony could fire me if they found out who am I. And don't update to 3.0 , beleive me or not it's possible to be able to run Isos on 2.6 , it just will take very sophisticated hardware to do so but it's crackable , unfortunately 3.0 will block isos forever and it will be impossible to downgrade since the codes of 2.6 will be deleted and new codes will install themselves to the psp and if someone tries to downgrade it will brick the psp just as every psp that is more than 2.0 version of firmware , it's impossible to downgrade yet it's possible to play isos on it but 3.0 will make it impossible. And another thing , some ps1 roms will be free but they will be almost like demos , the roms that are full or are not of the ones used as freebies will not be free. I gotta go bye.

he probably IS an 11 year old kid, pretending to work for sony. I think QJ should stop letting anonymous people post anymore (yes i know im anon, but that's just because i'm too lazy to login ^_^)

Let me see this correctly, what you are saying is that Sony plans on somehow, magically to delete all the software of the hardware and then reboot it, or atleast a new one.

Firstly that is impossible cause if the info is gone then what is going to run the update to 3.00???? I studied coding and I and every other coder are probably not that stupid. I mean wants you use that trojan 3 important system files are gone rendering your PSP useless! So no way is Sony gonna do something like that especially since it would ruin their reputation and make them liers.

If they promised a PS1 emulator and then lie, we are going to a really big drop in PSP sales cause of that!!! I do not know who you are but I suggest on reading something about coding, and while your at it get a book on moral business.

I have to say thats a hell of a lot of information. It sounds more probable though than the cracked up 11 year old kid descriptions. He says it takes hardware to run the isos. I do not think its impossible to downgrade from 2.6 yet though. I mean, if Sony knew it was possible, they wouldn't still be releasing it. There woud be a 2.6.1 already. I think what he says is completely possible and perhaps probable. Does anyone think 3.0 will make it EASIER to run homebrew or isos? Any you know they are going to release demos. Blue ray is here, so of course. and the cell processor is going to be seen in A LOT of things at least by Sony in the near future I would bet. Even if he doesn't work for Sony, I would heed his words.

yeah what if it is for the psp2. It usually takes 2-3 years to develop a really good system. So dont get so worried.

# PSP2 Definite PossibilityGuest 2006-03-24 11:09
I strongly believe this will lead to a PSP2. I remember reading an article a while back commenting that the PSPs graphic processor would be the last in house processor Sony would probably use on a mobile device. IMO this makes sense because it will be cheaper for them to outsource the graphics chip design because of the complexity of the latest chips.

Then there also this article dated 2/14/2006: http://us.gizmodo.com/gadgets/cellphones/nvidia-goforce-5500-launched-154494.php

It talks about the Nvidia GoForce 5500 mobile GPU.

And for my last reason I'm going to need confirmation from the homebrew coders. I believe Sony made it so all the 3D hardware in the PSP was accessed through API calls. This should make the current games compatible with the Nvidia chip rather easily, just as games written for the DirectX API will work across a vast number of different chips from both ATI and Nvidia.

For these 3 reasons, I think its easily possible we could be seeing some sort of hardware upgrade for the PSP. Whether this upgrade will be called PSP2 or PSP Revision B, hopefully we'll find out soon.

I've always been fond of the Nvidia arch types. If you'd read the occasional news bit a wile back nvidia released its Geforce Go Series chips a less powerfull but heavily optomized for low heat and efficiency... they noted the Geforce Go 5500, capable of rendering textures with a resolution of 1024^2 it has the same pipelines as the FX just a lower clock speed.

this alone would surpass the Xbox, now... I'm guessing they are going to work on a go card specificly optomized to work on the PSP. which in the end we could be seing Farcry quality games on the PSP2...

my only problem is 4 letter acronyms dont work out well... I'm wondering if we will see a new acronym for the next version of the PSP

Do you think Sony will pay more money then it has invested into nvidia for the ps3 for a psp?? The psp isnt holding its ground compared to the DS, dont get me wrong i love my psp ^^ but i doubt sony will dish out that much money for the psp2. My bets is on some Cell Pc or some home media system. =]

I don't think 4 letter acronyms will be a problem. I think Sony will play the same naming game the Apple iPod uses. Apple always upgrades the iPod, but you still just have an iPod in name (exceptions exist such as the nano and shuffle).

Every upgraded PSP will just be called the "PSP" and never "PSP2". The revision will change from A to B to C as the changes grow, but PSP will live on in name.

No, it wont be PSP2 because it is a handheld not a home entertainment so chances are the sales for a psp2 wont be as high as a ps3 sale, meaning it wont be psp2 deal. W/e they are making has to be bigger than the PS3 itself with SONY. NVidia is a graphics company, making the best GPU, meaning it will be something to do with visuals, it could be something w/ the movie industry, or the TV industry.

This is for sony tv's. All tv's made from sony will be digital starting next year, with top of the line models having cell processors of there own. These tv's will need to have a video chip, and using nvidia to make them would be the best choice because: saving time + money not having to reinvent the wheel by using technology learned from the ps3's gpu; seamless compatibility between all of sonys future products; sony allready has a good relationship with nvidia.

# If the nvidia thing is for the psp2Guest 2006-03-24 21:27
Now i wont join in on all this bull that is flying around but most likely it will be for a psp2. And as for saying it will hurt battery life no it wont that is the thing about getting a specialized chip for a mobile platform it is optimized for power saving ability and low heat operation as well as preformance being about 3rd on the list for things the chip is made for. If it is incorperated we will most likely see a boost in image quality as well as battery life. I just hope they take thier time and get the psp2 right get its battery life up there so no complaints are given and get its image quality up there so every one can stop compairing it to the ps1 and ps2 console...

# Mobile phones?Guest 2006-03-25 01:14
I can't help but thinking that it might be a deal for mobile phones or something like that. There were recent postings about nvidia diving into the mobile phone market with one of their graphics chips. Given the fact that sony /ericsson is trying hard to get a grip on the mobile phone market, only strengthens my believes.

That must be the deal , Nvidia found a way to apply cell chip processors working well on a handheld device and that runned all around the sony offices , I think that must be the deal because if Nvidia sent us those news to our offices it means that is important and if they want to apply cell chip processing to a handheld device then chances are it could be for a psp2 but because of distributing issues and everything it could take up to 2009. And I know that 2.6 is able to run iso's and that information amny of us have gotten but how we don't know , I guess great cracking software or something but 3.0 will block Iso'o forever , no more Iso's , and maybe no more downgraders too and even though sony will sell the roms cheaply they will be impossible to share , they will do something so that you can only download them form sony , after buying it , directly to your psp and it will somehow nthe rom will only work on that psp only don't know how.
