NVIDIA enlists Metropolis for FPS project |
Ó
EA's recent offering Crysis for the PC earned a lot of good press for having unparalleled visuals in any gaming platform to date. Its rise atop the graphics hill, however, provoked many challengers, including unconventional competitors like graphics card makers NVIDIA.NVIDIA is currently running a program dubbed "The Way It's Meant To Be Played" (TWIMTBP) which is geared towards finishing a revolutionary first-person shooter in 2009. In a recent press release, NVIDIA announced the inclusion of a Polish development team that will help out in the project.
Warsaw-based team Metropolis is set to join NVIDIA's efforts which has already started in earnest with the help of German team IMC. They're cooperating on the FPS codenamed THEY due out next year.
"We are happy to join the exclusive circle of TWIMTBP developers," says Metropolis. "NVIDIAÂ’s trust in a European product paid off our efforts and long hours during the development of a top title in the overcrowded market of FPS games."
"NVIDIA’s tech support will further enhance the technical aspects of THEY, so we are able to release a triple-A mystery FPS in 2009, which will present future gamers with the best graphics boards of tomorrow!“ they add.
No specific platforms have been announced for THEY as of yet, but we'll give you updates as soon as announcements come from NVIDIA.

Well, Crysis was definitely one of the best-looking FPS games of recent memory, but it was mediocre at best in the gameplay department. And considering the fact that Infernal, Metropolis Software's last game, followed that exact same format, there's nothing really to look forward to here unless they learned their lesson (which doesn't really seem to be the case since they're focusing all their energy on graphics once again).
I'm inclined to agree with all your points. Hopefully NVIDIA will bring another company into the mix so it'll have at least a better plot. Maybe a few cliffhangers, too.
why was the gameplay mediocre? because you say so? i honestly loved the gameplay but the true downfall to the game was its terrible ending.
...it wasn't the mediocrity of gameplay. It's essentially because the story culminated in an anti-climactic spiral in conclusion. Partly like how Crysis joined the "to be continued" fray of games. It could have been more suited to my taste, but I guess my taste isn't what appeals to most.
i completely agree. The gameplay to Crysis was pretty damn good, but theses cliff hanger endings are starting to piss me off. We pay 59.99 for a half a game? This is the reason i hated halo 2 half life 2 etc. HL2 was a bit different because they came otu with expansions rather quickly compared to the time between halo 2 and halo 3. I just hope crysis expansions comes within this year.
They always say it's gonna be revolutionnary.... but how many acheived this? crysis got it... and I'd say that COD4 was almost at it. Still, I fear that they'll do something so the graphics looks good only on nvidia, and I have an ATI... it's sad those kind of things... ps: For all the people who wrote that crysis was bad or had half a story, I say: 1st: I LOVED the game, I'm finishing it for the 2nd time and I find it GREAT even another time. 2nd: The control is perfect, the only thing I disliked was how the guy shoot (hard to touch a target at range) 3rd: for the story, yes it's not a complete ending, but it still feel like you finished the game (with the boss) so it's okay. It's normal that they wanna make more than one good game. I mean, I'm a FAN of half life and it's always like that, so I'm kind used to it. It's not that bad, the story is more complex this way :D And again, the gameplay is the core element! :D
They know they're cards better than anyone, passing that information directly to they're developers and we could have some great games coming our way. Not only that, but the PS3 holds and Nvidia graphics which means we should get some of the love for sure, (not saying the 360 won't). More game developers either way is always a great thing. My main question is though, how is this gonne work for people with ATi cards and so on? Are they going to make the games work only with they're cards (I don't think this would be allowed) or will they make the games look better on they're cards apposed to any other brand. This will just remain to be seen.
hmm... I don't think they bluff. It's Nividia, so they know how to take out the best out of there graphic cards.
Crysis to me played out exactly like Far Cry Instincts, especially with the inclusion of special abilities (something that game already had). Couple that with the fact that the game engine (CryEngine 2) did a horrible job at optimizing itself, so it's either you went out and spent $1000 to upgrade your PC, or be stuck at low-to-med settings (usually the former) for most users. The hit detection was bad, the "physics" questionable, the AI at times downright despicable (a guy who was supposed to be firing at me was facing the other direction shooting at a bunch of barrels)... it felt more like an overblown benchmark/tech demo for the engine rather than an actual game. Couple that with the fact that it sometimes took an entire clip of ammo to kill a soldier, and at times this game got really boring. There's nothing original or innovative about it aside from the pretty graphics. That's how I stand on the game, anyway. Regardless, Crytek aren't the people behind this game. It's Metropolis Software, who have yet to make one good game imho. I don't expect them to do a complete 180 just because they have the backing of nVidia.
The optimizations to the game yes i give you that i feel like maybe we should be getting an extra 5-10 fps out of our hardware(i have 8800gt) and please do not fault the shooting. Play the game on hard and please take your silencer of the gun it usually takes 3-4 hits to kill any enemy even with the pistol. The physics were decent not as good as they were said to be and if you put the game on insane you wills ee there is no reason to fault the ai..... Back on subject i hope this game is fun at least and not another Gears of war.
