NPD: PlayStation 3 is selling better than the Xbox 360

It seems that NPD, a sales tracking firm, has said that the Sony PlayStation 3 is selling better than Microsoft's Xbox 360. Interestingly enough, the sales figures in the US are still showing that the Xbox 360 is outselling the PS3.

NPD made their analysis based on the figures of the Xbox 360 during its release. To quote their exact words were "figures show that the PS3 is selling slightly faster in the US than the Xbox 360 did at the same stage in its release". So that means that in the same time frame, the PS3 has actually sold more units. Is this a sign of things to come or simply an initial surge of sales because of the hype?

Regardless, if what NPD is saying is true, then Sony will have to do something to keep this momentum to achieve market dominance (a title the Xbox 360 is currently holding). In the meantime, we'll stay tuned and see if Sony will be able to maintain their spot on NPD's charts. More news as it happens here on QJ.

The wii is doing well... but nobody knows how lock that will last. It's success is largely due to its price... but (again imo) it doesn't compare to the 360 or wii...

Doesn't matter how you twist the figures, Sony knows sales haven't been anywhere near expectations. MS met their expectations. MS are growing from a small user base and Sony is shrinking from a large user base. I’m one Great Japanese who lives in the country called the Great Japan.

To help you understand, I’ll give you a very simple and concise lecture. I’m a young guy who earns about $100 every single hour. I earn $1,500 every two days. So, for me, $1,000 (the cost of the PS3 + taxes + accessories + some more things) is no problem. All those X360 lovers hate PS3s because they can’t afford expensive products from the Great Japan. All PS3s in the Great Japan are constantly sold out; there’re so many rich ppl here. X360 owners are game addicts; and game addicts are poorly educated; so all the game addicts (Xbox 360 buyers) live off minimum wage (about $7 an hour). Like the former president of Sony said, just work more hours to buy a PS3 if you don’t have enough money, immatured guys.

[Easy comparisons between PS3 and X360]

* PS3 can be compared as a very expensive ‘luxury car’.

* X360 is just an average car from ‘GM’ (General Motors).

You can just own a GM car then live your lives for 10 years; no problems. You can go to your workplace and do all sort of things with your little GM car; however, if you want to get more features (airbags, superb tires and all kinds of state-of-the-art electronics), better quality components and better deigned car, you must buy a very expensive luxury car.

All those poor X360 owners say that you don’t need PS3s because the X360 consoles can do so much. That’s completely idiotic. Let me bring up the following example. A cheap GM car can move at the speed of 110 km/h without getting any damage to the components on the car. A very expensive luxury car can go at the speed of 200 km/h without getting any damage to the components. In real life situations, you almost never have any chances to go faster than 110 km/h even if you own a ‘luxury car’ because of many factors such as speed limitation, traffic conditions, et cetera; therefore, poor GM car owners can say that their cheep cars are as good as unnecessarily expensive ‘luxury cars’ because GM cars can do anything the luxury cars can do. Just because cheap GM cars can do most things which can be done by expensive luxury cars, it doesn’t mean you only have to buy cheap GM cars. The xbox would have sold much more if people did not hold out to see what the wii and ps3 where like. Due to this, and the shortage of x360's, it is giving the illusion that the ps3 is selling much faster. But I bet each 360 sold today they will sell 1 or even 0.5 ps3. I walk into any major department store and I can find 2-3 60 GB ps3 3 20 GB ps3 as for xbox I can only see maybe 1 (if lucky) premium system and 2-3 core. as for the wii... Well its the wii, people are still trying to find one. But this could be because the PS3 in Canada has been jacked up in price... but it was like this long before the price went up..

Are they counting how many have been returned? I bought three just a couple of weeks after launch and I couldn't get rid of them to save my life! I ended up taking them back to Gamestop so that I wouldn't be stuck with them. I couldn't even sell them at cost. I'm sure people are still buying them, but i hardly think that its doing better than the Xbox did. You couldn't even find 360's on shelves until mid summer after its release. I see PS3s everywhere.

There are plenty of games, especially for a console as young as ps3. Maybe you should actually try playing them sometime. Resistance, Motorstorm, Virtua Fighter 5, Tekken Dark Ressurection are all top notch games and make owning a ps3 awesome. Not bad for a four and half month old console. Today I was in two stores and bought an Ps3. All in all it's a good console, but I bought it because of the blurayplayer. There are no really good games.

But what I wanted to say (as an answer to the other posts) is: in the first store they got about 40 Ps3 and 3 Xbox360s, and in the second one they got 7 Ps3s left and about 20 Xbox360. So you can't really say which one is selling better with just looking how much they have in stores.

I don't care which wil win, I have both. The one for games the other one for watching Bluray movies on my HDTV :).

But one thing is sure: Bluray will win.

Get it right Blu Ray and HD-DVD are going no where, their sales are terrible and the DVD9 has shown that it is the best system(also the same one in the 360).

Go look at any website and look at sales of DVD the others are just NOTHINGS, and a real FACT is Blu Ray is in LAST place for dedicated hardware sales of HD hardware go look for yourself on google.

Blu RAY and HD-DVD are both FLOPS and they are NEVER going to change anything..

look, why don't we all just calm down a bit...

it's clear that x360 did well, but ps3 is not doing badly either, having sold enough units to justify itself.

let's remember the ps2 vs xbox thing... basically ps2 got the jump on xbox and sold more, but dreamcast got the jump on ps2 and sold fewer... what can we learn from this?

time will tell.

early interest isn't a good indication of how well a system will sell over time.

i bought a uk ps3, £425, but i bought ZERO games - it's not worth it, they're all not good enough for my £45. i did get tekken, it's only 7 quid. BUT i haven't bought a x360 due to the fact that i see ZERO games i want on it.

i'll tell you what though, being able to put linux on it is quite interesting... it's a proper 100% legit way of playing emulators, divx, even ripping dvds etc... amazing sony would just let ps3 owners do that...

There is no doubt that PS3 will surpass the Xblows 270 in time. They only have a year lead to catch up on.

1. 100 Million PS2 players to upgrade from. Microshaft does this with its OS software, all time.

2. Some Xblows 270 users have had to replace the console serveral times. That will catch up with them.

3. Spring Update is coming for Xblows 270. Yipee! That ought brick a few thousand system. And make more people happy with Xblows 270.

4. The PS3 is a better system by far. The hardware is way more technically advanced than Xblows 270. Better built units. Not cheaply made, for max profits, like the xblows 270.

Oh, And I have a slightly used Xblows 270 console for sale. Bricked only once by Microshaft, and never repaired. Give your wife a nice gift for her birthday, buy her a nice doorstop. Or you can use the flashing red LED lights for Christmas decoration.

I bought the PS3 when it first came out and at the time it was hard to get, but then suddenly no one wanted it so everyone started selling it on Ebay, but it wasn't good enough. Nobody bought it for more than $800 at the time. The 360 however, I got a long time ago and it has served me well.

This article is fanboy-ish because the reality is the PS3 didn't sell that much around the same amount of time when the 360 was selling. I got the 2nd batch of the 360 that wasn't overheating, but if there is any truth to this article at all, then the argument is that the 360 was the only next-gen console around (this is fact). After people got a whiff of next-gen, suddenly Sony fanboys came out of the woodwork. Don't deny it, the 360 paved the way for the PS3.

How does this show sheer diminating victory? The 360 was in low supply for many months after launch and sold out the entire time! The PS3 hardware was in production for much longer before launch so supplies were high. Basically they made plenty of consoles early and had them ready minus the blu ray laser assemblies, which were added as they came in! Then they limited shipments to make artificial demand!

BTW, did you check out coverage of the disasterous Austrailan and European launches? Only 80 people in line in the biggest city of Austrailia in a huge disapointing launch ceremony!

1. Most PS2 owners have lost interest in sony. People who are looking for a GAME console and realize PS3 has the fewest games and exclusives. It has a metal casing unlike the PS3 and doesn't show every scratch and fingerprint.
