No warm welcome for Pelican's PS3 Pro Cooler |
Ó
Bad puns aside, we noticed some people on Sony's PlayStation boards discussing the arrival of a PS3-specific cooling system. Needless to say, they're not impressed. Thanks to a tip from Deric, we learned that GameStop was taking pre-release orders for Pelican Accessories' PS3 Pro Cooler. As the name implies, it's supposed to keep your unit from overheating, leaving you with a worry-free gaming experience.
They just picked a very bad time to market something like this. Reports of defective Nyko intercoolers and lack of confidence from Microsoft really didn't help the sales of Nyko's Xbox 360 cooling system. It also didn't make the idea of third-party cooling accessories very popular among gamers in the know.
Some members of Sony's PlayStation forums held the same view about Pelican's move to sell the Pro Cooler. In this case, their assertion for why the PS3's vents get hot is because the console's cooling system is doing its job and dissipating heat.
As a parting shot, Ninja-Matic probably had the best comment there, applying scientific concepts to game consoles:
I'd worry if you felt NO heat coming from your vents and it was still inside the system. Remember folks, heat rises - there are no vents on the "top" of the playstation - so turn that biznatch on it's side so the vents are up.

All these coolers are unneeded crap. What kind of moron would pre-order one?
a lot of people would fall for it as they are uninformed just spread the word that it is total bull***** and noone will buy it
My roommate and I actually worried at first that the side of the PS3 was getting hot, and not the top, till, well, we figured out the air is actually coming out, thus, the heat, I don't know what Pelican was thinking, maybe they are just hoping that people think the PS3 is actually overheating from the side, and want to buy their add on, which will just block Sony's natural vent and fan, thus, overheating the systems and saying Sony sucks:-P
The next generation just started (11/17). Pointless add-ons and internet fees are for the last gen.
I wouldn't think that standing the ps3 vertically would change anything all that much. I mean, yea warmer air does rise, but it seems like it would be a trivial amount compared to how much air is blown out by the fans, which are supposedly very efficient. I dunno, I'm not hating on anyone that does stand their ps3 up. I actually think it looks better, but I decided not to because I didn't want dust falling into that top vent when it wasn't in use. I'm just a lazy azz that doesn't want to tidy-up my ps3 a lot. On a side note, I just got my ps3 like 2 weeks ago and from the beginning it's been making a distinct clicking noise whenever it's loading a game, or powering down with a disc still inside. Is that normal? Everything seems to be working perfectly.
im not buying i actually like my ps3 hot it serves as a hand warmer
bit of a anti-peripheral 'flame war' huh? reckon pelican got their fingers burnt! seems this issue has people 'hot' under the collar... shouldn't we all just 'chill out' a bit? this app has received a rather 'luke warm' reception... i'm done.
I've had my ps3 on for about 2 weeks now and only turned it off two times just to bring it over a friends house. It's a little warm but it has a built in power supply that sucks up 380 Watts, so I would expect some heat. Actually now that I think of it try touching the back of a refrigerator (they use about 380 Watts) actually don't! you'll burn yourself. My point is the ps3 runs pretty cool for what it is. The only reason someone might want extra fans is if they are over clocking their PS3.
i dont have room to stand mine's up. occasionally after a while the ps3 wont start up when its warm. i just wait a few minutes and its fine
I'm not really sure how that cooler would help anyway. The only thing it could do is try to suck air out of the ps3, and it is hard to say if it will be useful because the air doesn't have to go over the correct parts at all. Normally a fan blows onto an air, forcing the air to that spot, that device would only suck more air from the console, and it is hard to say what path it would take. I'm betting it all it would do is increase the airflow from the vent under the blu ray drive in a straight line to the exaust, which would just make air go around the cooling unit instead of into/through it.
i thought a clicking noise caused by the disc drive often means the laser is struggling to line up. anyways, pelican is the almighty maker of ***** addons.
Dude, you got a broken PS3. Return it! LOL unless you have a plastic bag or something else blocking the vent it should start up when you turn it on.
