No Atari Titles On PS3 Until 2007

atariAtari CEO Bruno Bonnell has confirmed that there will be no Atari titles for the PS3 before 2007. While the publisher expressed its support for all three next-gen consoles, rough release date and a high retail price point of the PS3 got Atari thinking. Bonnell said, "It's just that we're lacking information about the PS3 at this stage...As far as the Wii and the Xbox 360 go, we'll be there for this season; for PS3, we'll probably have to wait a little later in the year before we release some new titles."

Though the high price point is what made Atari step on the brakes, Bonnell believes that it does not put the PS3 at any risk of failure. He said, "I think that by deciding to put the PS3 at this price, Sony has chosen to really differentiate itself from the other consoles."

Bonnell thinks that Sony has set its eyes on the high-end market - targetting the hardcore fans. He added, "There will be a time they can reduce the price and access more people, but clearly that's a technical choice that Sony has made to be selective on the field at stage one."

» Good that way they take their time to make a good game.

Otherwise we would see crap Atari titles as usual. I say this is good news. Let companies know that PS3 games have to be next gen or else don't even bother.

» is this even news?

i mean cmon, ps3 releases in very late 06, no duh. there won't be a lot of games until 2007. This isn't news, just look at the launch titles, then if you don't see a company, they will have a game out in 2007. lawl.

Just looking at their titles for the PS2.... Not one game I would buy. Seriously Atari, your not in any position to stage a protest against sony.

vecha "two devs quitting on the ps3..."

explain to me, what part of that paragraph says there "quitting" the PS3. Answer....there isnt a part.

Plus the PS3 is released in mid NOVEMBER 2006, thats one and half MONTH befire 2007! The statement is very misleading, its making it sound like PS3 fans will have to wait ages for atari games. Waiting at least one and half month isnt a long time, and lets face it, there games arent exactly great either

ur rite yo. a whole month seperates the PS3 and 2007, meaning that atari has just said "We're not releaseing any games for teh PS3's launch".

Also, does SNK not supporting the PS3 upset anyone? All they ever come out with is rehashes of KOF and metal slug which I could play on older systems for a fraction of the price.

» Atari make good games.

Stop bashing Atari, they make grate games : FAHRENHEIT, TEST DRIVE: UNLIMITED and more.

» bleep

so what games have Atari released on the other next gen consoles then??

ohhhh thats right none, nada, zitch..... first game for Xbox360 will be releeased in september(TDU I belive) does that mean the Xbox360 failed last year and is now simply a headless chicken running about?

These posts about some pubisher not releasing games for a console might say more about the publisher than the console itself one would think, in the case of Atari= financial trouble and the need to boost sales of their current and imediate future(AKA TDU being released in september before PS3 in other words), in the case of SNK= what would the benefit of KOF be in 1080P compared to the PS2 version uprezed to 1080P, the only difference for SNK is that they would have to redraw all their content(art in this case).

Atari doesn't make any good games. sure, they *PUBLISHED* Indigo Prophecy, but Quantic Dream, and Independent Developer, were the ones who actually made the game. Atari is also *publishing* Neverwinter Nights 2 this year (which i tested for four months for Obsidian Entertainment), but Obsidian Entertainment is the development team.

Also, if you've been up in the news, Atari has sold the rights to *TWO* of it's key franchises: Driver, and, er, something else. the only games made by an Atari developer are, i believe the Matrix games made by Shiny Entertainment (though Shiny could be independent or second party, i don't really care to remember).

Test Drive may very well be a great game, but, honestly, how hard is it to make a game where you drive a car? you program a driving engine, design some tracks, set up a physics engine, and that's about it (i'm being general and facetious, but still). and there are like, a bajillion engines i'm sure can be used for driving games.

so yeah, Atari can't actually *AFFORD* to make any next gen games right now, as they are on the verge of closing it's doors due to making hardly any money off of the dead franchises they have. they're hoping Neverwinter Nights 2 and Earthworm Jim for the PSP will reinvigorate sales and give them another fighting chance. personally, i think their death has been a long time coming, but they've managed to get on life support. but life support can only do so much before the plug has to be pulled.

» doesnt matter

it doesnt matter that they arent that good of a publisher. its the point that 2 of them have resigned to publish games for them untill ps3 proves itself. kind of reminds me of what happend to the N64, do you guys remeber that, it was the better of the 2 systems, the graffix where 2 worlds apart but publisher didnt want to put out games for it

fanboys are stupid instead of analizing the situation, all you guyz do is defend defend defend, remeber this is your money not mine that you guyz are spending and look at your living rooms do you realy have an hd tv that will take advantege of the BD. so stop defending and start analizing the situation at hand

by Figboy - 2006-08-03 16:24
» meh.

it does indeed matter that they don't publish good games, as, who would want a developer that makes mediocre to god awful games making games for their system? and besides, 2007, once the PS3 launches, is only a month and a half away. also, the other developer that pulled out of PS3 development was a developer most of us gamers have never even heard of. once they make a name for themselves (either developing for PS2, PSP, or 360), they'll be on the PS3 also (barring they don't get gobbled up by Microsoft).

the reason Sony got to be number one during the PS1 and PS2 era is because they locked down some badass developers and franchises for their consoles (ie, SquareSoft and Konami). Even Pandemic Studios (who have come out of nowhere with quality titles), is developing Mercenaries 2 exclusively for the PS3 (for now). i highly doubt Sony's arrogance has suddenly blinded them to the fact that they do, in fact *need* their 3rd party developers. that's a lesson Nintendo *didn't* learn back during the PS1 era, and they felt that the strength of their franchises alone would be enough to keep them on top, so what if Square and other great 3rd party companies jumped ship. we know now that they are wrong.

there have been numerous developer interviews where the devs are saying that Sony is being much more helpful this time around than when the PS2 launched. as for having an HD TV in my home? i don't have one now, but i do indeed plan on getting one sometime this year, or next. i've seen movies on Blu Ray and HD TV (just yesterday, i was looking at a trailer for Over the Hedge on Blu Ray, and it looked phenomenal in 1080p).

Sony has never released a console out of the gate that was targeted at the mainstream. the first year is always for early adopters, with subsequent years (usually the systems 3rd year) and price drops being when the consoles hit their stride in terms of mainstream affordability and software lineup (most of the truly killer titles for the PS2 didn't appear until two to three years after the system launched).

developers waited to see how the PS2 would do as well, before they hopped on board fully. Microsoft has 25 million fans (that's how many X Boxes sold last gen). Nintendo has 25 million fans (that's how many Gamecubes sold last gen). Sony has 100 million fans and counting judging by PS2 sales(or at least they know and recognize the brand Sony). even if 25 million PS2 owners jumped shipped and left for the X Box 360 or Wii, that would still leave Sony with 75 million Sony supporters.

better graphics don't mean crap if there isn't any software the consumer wants. that was the X Boxes biggest issue: it only had a few types of games, and no Japanese support (which is, contrary to popular belief, very, very important). i own an X Box, and the only games i own for it are KOTOR I and II, Jade Empire, Ninja Gaiden, X Men Legends (i worked on the game, so i got a free copy), and Fable. that list are the only exclusive titles worth owning on the platform (barring X Men Legends). and maybe Halo if you like that sort of game (i bought it, played it twice; single and multiplayer, and traded it in recently). that's not a games lineup.

not counting any multi-platform titles, the PS2 *still* wipes the floor with the number of high quality exclusive titles for the console. that's what wins console wars. it always has, and it always will. and with the cost of *EVERYTHING* rising nowadays, consumers will forsake the cost of something for it's value. the Wii, and 360, regardless of price, are still just gaming consoles, with a few extra features added (ie, X Box Live). the PS3, while expensive as all get out, does so much more. and consumers, when informed by a store clerk, will see what the PS3 offers as value to them for their money.

i'd rather spend $500-$600 on a machine that plays my PS1, PS2, and PS3 games, movies (DVD and Blu Ray), music CDs, supports Linux (so it's very much a computer), can connect to the internet, and run homebrew (according to Sony), than $400 on a console that just

i tell u what, if im nervous about the success of a computer console then i really aint got much of a life. Im more nervous about the US having d1ckheads throughout its country than a games console. Some of you need to look up the definition of life, because alot of you really don't have one.

Especially you Vecha. i dont laugh because im nervous, i laugh because you a pr1ck with no life

And checking back to a comments page several times, worried about how people respond to your ignorant posts..Yeah, you sure have the prime example of a life. Do your own self a favor and go outside, instead of taking all the faults you're embarassed to have and using them as insults towards others.
