Ninja Theory: 3D gaming this gen will be 'limited'

Heavenly Sword dev Ninja Theory has their own... theory regarding Sony's push for 3D gaming on the PS3. According to studio co-founder Tameem Antoniades, it's doable this generation but it will be limited.

"The problem is that to do 3D properly you need to render 60 frames per second, per eye. And at least a 720p resolution [per eye]," said Antoniades in an interview with CVG.

"So in essence that's 1080p rendering at 120 frames per second, and the current generation can only process very rudimentary graphics at that spec."

Antoniades further noted that the limitations of this current console generation won't let gamers play something close to James Cameron's Avatar movie, but things will really take off in the next generation.

"Every generation has to be at least five to ten times more powerful than the last," he said, "so I think we'll get there in the next generation. I think that will be totally revolutionary for games."

At least that'll give me time to scrape together the cash for a new TV.

He makes it seem so impossible...
to do 3D you need to render a single scene twice. at any resolution, any of the current generation consoles can easily do that.

you could always (god forbid) drop the frame rate to 30fps from 60.

Well Killzone 2 is getting a 3D patch...so if Killzone 2 can do 3D on PS3 then any game can. Just up to the devs to make their games run efficiently. So only "limited" by devs, not technology.

Yep, KZ2 is getting the patch for it. Saw it on Qore.

Have another look around online, Sony was just pulling hype on people, it was a test sequence. They say they have no plans for a retail Killzone 3d. From the company that steals your features, now featuring misleading you on the future of games... Bunch of clowns killing the company I love.

I think if the PS3 can pull of GoW III, it can pull of 3D :D

No, that's 720p at 120 FPS

Limited? That would be at least I'd rather say it would be near epic fail (for the average consumer anyway). I mean what do they expect? that consumers that just bought a HD TV will jump to 3D already?

I think there's something missing from this interview, because like Techni says, the math doesn't add up.

Also, it should be fair to point out that most games aren't native 1080p unless they're downloadable or have rudimentary graphics. If we can't even hit that, why are we jumping to something even more taxing on our hardware?

Humm what about the dsi, it uses special 3d, and it also can be implemented on pretty much anything, why not the ps3.

That's not what this article is referring to.
What the DSi is doing is a simple perspective change.

The technology referred to in this article could be considered almost like stereo vision, giving each eye its own image.

# 3d or not 3dGuest 2010-04-05 00:37
what is difference if its in 3d or not as long as the game is fun to play that is the important :-)

I'm sure newer games can be designed with 3D in mind. This interview stinks because it is telling us something we already know. We know 3D will be limited this generation. Current consoles are already near there have life before the next generation comes out. At least that's the trend these last 25 to 30 years. Regardless every generation I am impressed how far we move.

# Bullshit article!Guest 2010-04-06 09:18
I don't know if it's Tameem Antoniades that is mistaken about how the technology works, or the writer of the article, but some things are factually incorrect.

He claims that it's like rendering 1080p at 120 FPS, that's not the case at all.

What he's suggesting is that it would take four times as much power as the regular render technique.

Let's do some calculations of our own, shall we.

You only need to take the current resolution you've got, and render that at twice the amount of Hertz you currently have.

In other words, 3D rendering only requires twice the amount of power of the regular render technique, not four.

So it's like rendering 720p at 120Hz, because that's exactly what it is.

But let's say you don't have the hardware to render twice as much, do you need to go out and buy a PS4 or an Xbox 720?

Or does the visual quality of the game have to suffer a bit?

Neither!

Because instead of rendering at 120Hz (60 FPS per eye), you can render at 60Hz (30 FPS per eye).

Movies are recorded at 23.976 FPS, so the lower framerate wouldn't be noticable if you think movies are displaying smoothly.

And guess what, you would be using the exact amount of power you are using currently!

If someone like me can figure out that you don't need more power or new hardware for 3D, either the guys who are pushing this technology are greedy, or they are highly incompetent.
