Ninja Gaiden Sigma is 35% complete |
Ó
1up recently chatted with Team Ninja's director for Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Yohsuke Hayashi to talk about the game's current state of development, the depth of the characters, and Rachel's "explicit femininity."Here are some of the details that Hayashi divulged during the interview:
- As this post's title says, the game is currently at 35%, and Hayashi says that they're at the point where they "can run through all the stages back to back in the game."
- They've improved the usability of the projectile weapons and now, you can also use the bow and arrow while jumping in the air
- On the Rachel-Ryu drama: Having Rachel as a playable character is something that the fans have looked forward to but Hayashi says that Ryu Hayabusa will still be the "super-ninja." Hayashi also says that "Rachel is a supporting character... she's not going to replace him as a main character."
- Ninja Dog Mode will still be in the game.
- While Team Ninja is pushing to make the most out of the PS3 graphics-wise, they have decided that it will only support 720p because that is the optimal resolution to get the best graphics in the game.
- Team Ninja is using the multi-mapping technique to render the visuals. (Basically, this just means more realistic graphics for us; from clothing texture to the veins and eyeballs and whatnots. Visual realism thanks to multi-mapping.)
- Rachel will also don multiple weapons and she'll be able to level them up like Ryu's.
- Multiplayer support: Hayashi doesn't confirm this but he says not to rule out the possibility because there IS a Team Ninja group that's currently "exploring" multiplayer ideas. (*crosses fingers*)
- On Rachel's "explicit femininity" - never underestimate a woman's hairstyle and earrings. More than being visual treats, Rachel's earrings will also be able to give her different special abilities. (Much like Ryu's armlets.) Also, Team Ninja is making sure that every move Rachel makes will show that she is a woman.

awesome, can't wait to get this game when it comes out
Yosuke Hayashi: "Well, this game is going to support 720p, and that is because we have determined that this is optimal resolution to get the best quality images out of the PS3. There are companies out there that are developing games at 1080p, and the problem is that they're really pushing the limits of the hardware at that resolution, and I think that if you examine it objectively you will see that in order to get the best balance of performance and image quality then 720p is your only choice. I think that the companies that are making a big deal out of making games at 1080p are either underestimating their ability to get their games to run well at that resolution, or they're basically just using that as an advertising gimmick. I'm confident that if you want to make the best-looking game you can on PS3, then 720p is your only choice." Looking great. Yes, 720p is the optimum resolution this gen, regardless of what Sony keep saying, and I'm pleased to see Hayashi and Kojima both say that 1080p is not important to them because they want the best graphics possible on the PS3 without compromise. 720p is the HD resolution which will allow them to achieve this! It's great to see this game on the PS3, and I'm looking forward to news on Ninja Gaiden 2 in future (although I think it will be a 360 exclusive, but hopefully it will be multi-platform).
Wait. So they are remaking the game for the PS3 with PS3 graphics? Instead of just porting it?
Yes....It is True I Believe With Current Hardware Not Only 720p is the Best Choice Performance Wise,But Most HDTV in the world now are 720p Making a Game in 1080P will Be wasting some of the Systems Power On a Factor that Most People Cant Enjoy.. Well...Lair Looks Incredible Even at 1080P thanks for the Streaming Technology of the Engine and the Usage of the PS3 Hdd as a Second Stream [Check Interview at IGN] But i Still think Lair will Be Better at 720p...but then Its Sony,And they Like to Push the Envelope.
This is what MS have said from the beginning, calling 720p the 'sweet spot' for next-gen gaming, and yet I lost count of the number of gamers here and elsewhere who attacked MS for saying this whilst boasting about 1080p on the PS3, just because Sony made a big issue of out it. Every time a PS3 game is announced at 1080p, the usual suspects jump onboard to say "Hahaha, see M$, you said it was impossible, yeah maybe for your Lamebox 360 but not for the PS3". Ok, not everyone are fanboys, but you know what I mean. ;) Like I've always said, take ANY game running at 1080p, and you could make it look even better and run smoother at 720p. So Resistance would have looked better had the devs focused on 720p in the first place instead of 1080p until a few months before release (so expect Resistance 2 to look much better, especially if they stick to 720p). Lair is 1080p, but even at CES recently, the frame rate suffered badly in places; http://kotaku.com/gaming/lair/hands-on-lair-for-ps3-227185.php? So I can't help but feel that like Insomniac before, they are determined to stick to 1080p even if common sense tells them they should drop it down to 720p (as Insomniac eventually did for Resistance). So I'm pleased to see PS3 devs finally speaking out about the benefits and advantages of 720p after all this hype about 1080p games.
"But i Still think Lair will Be Better at 720p..." Agreed 100% "but then Its Sony,And they Like to Push the Envelope" Hmmm, I don't really see this as pushing the envelope really. This to me is what Hayashi described as "an advertising gimmick", as well as bragging rights for Factor 5. Factor 5 are one of those devs whose games have always been more about graphics than gameplay, and from what I've been reading about Lair, the same appears to be true for this game too (hopefully I'm proven wrong). Last gen, Factor 5 were always boasting about what they could do on the Gamecube, saying they are doing things no other dev can do and that they can make the GC do anything the XBox can. This is why I think they are so determined to make this game 1080p, because it will be a major selling point for the game (even if the gameplay is average), and they can brag about it, and they'll receive a pat on the back from Sony who really need an impressive 1080p game on the PS3 after all they've said about it since E3 2005. We'll see how it all turns out. :)
It looks MUCH better then the original versions already.... I honestly wish they didn't even push for 720p, and just tried to get some more realism out of 480i/p instead....but even with 10 mb of edram MS knew 1080p was impratical, and would sacrifice alot in other areas.....Sony is just a big head idiot of a corporation and it's funny to see developers say "screw that, we actually want a good looking game, not a sh*tty looking game in hi-res...." GTHD was able to be pulled off because there are little to no particle effects and not many physics calculations being done....even then they managed to have horrible crowds and textures...although the mountains are sweet...
720p is right on the money. But Sony has so much talk to back up right now that they need this title to work. And who wouldn't agree about Sony pushing the envelope? *looks at god of war II* But what exactly happens when this title does come out with all issues resolved? I'd hope Factor 5 gets the pat on the back it disserves.
"But what exactly happens when this title does come out with all issues resolved? I'd hope Factor 5 gets the pat on the back it disserves" No, they'll deserve a pat on the back if the game is actually good. You know, gameplay over graphics. ;)
Ie, the PS3 can't handle more. I don't like they way they are trying to phrase it. It is annoying.
"Well...Lair Looks Incredible Even at 1080P thanks for the Streaming Technology of the Engine and the Usage of the PS3 Hdd as a Second Stream [Check Interview at IGN]" I assume you're talking about the following; http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/733/733921p1.html He mentions streaming from Blu-ray, but nothing about any special use of the HDD (did I miss something? Or did you make that up? ;)).
The Same Link:Second Page "The hard drive and Blu-ray can be used to stream enormous amounts of data. All of these things add up to a completely new paradigm" Another Quote Page 4: "The final decisions about the hard drive as a standard inclusion took a bit longer, but we planned on using it from day one anyways, so we were prepared." Its Simple...They are Using the Hdd to Save Up an Awfull Amount of Ram...This is How they Managed to Get it Work at 1080P. I will Talk More About The Importance Of the Built-in Hdd...and How will Developers Be able to Use it to actually Better Utilize the Ram and Decrease Load-times But that is When i Have Some Time...which i Dont right Now ;)
rachel, we get to see more rachel, yay
rachel, we get to see more rachel, yay
"The hard drive and Blu-ray can be used to stream enormous amounts of data. All of these things add up to a completely new paradigm" Hard drive part maybe referring to the 20 to 40 minute install some games give you the choice of so you don't need to put up with the slow ass blu-ray loading times. Most 360 games use the hard drive if it's available. if (hard drive ++ true) { read hdd.cache } else read disc }
Let me debug that. if (360.HDD.Connected() equals true) { read 360.HDD.Cache } else { read 360.Disc }
"The hard drive and Blu-ray can be used to stream enormous amounts of data. All of these things add up to a completely new paradigm" Where does it say anything about HOW the HDD is being used in Lair? It's a very general statement about being able to stream data from both. And BTW, ALL data is streamed, it doesn't arrive as a block of data instantaneously from one medium to another, it has to be streamed, i.e. copied over bit by bit, byte by byte. Hence devs often use the term interchangeably. We've already seen a number of games on the PS3 which give gamers the option of storing large amounts of data (about 5GB) onto the HDD to speed up load times. This data can also be said to be 'streamed' from the HDD instead of the Blu-ray drive. This is not necessary on the 360 because the transfer speed of the DVD drive is about 40% faster than the PS3's Blu-ray drive on average (but at least Blu-ray is much quieter ;)). Hence it's likely that Factor 5's use of the HDD is for the purposes of reducing initial load times, as seen on some other PS3 games. So as Devise says above, you assume too much. ;) The HDD has nothing to do with the game running at 1080p instead of 720p. In the same way, the frame rate problems for Resistance running at 1080p would not have suddenly vanished by use of the HDD. It just doesn't work that way Broken_Hero.
*"Hence devs often use the term interchangeably." I edited that paragraph a few times, and meant to say "Hence devs often use the terms stream, load and copy interchangeably".
