Ninja Gaiden Sigma devs made the PS3 smoke

Speaking to GameInformer , Yosuke Hayashi, the director of Team Ninja's Ninja Gaiden Sigma, claims that unlike DOA4's Itagaki who blew up a few Xbox 360s, he was only able to make his batch of PlayStation 3 devkits "smoke." He explains:

WeÂ’ve made a couple of devkits smoke, but we havenÂ’t had any actually blow up yet. [laughs] As far as using the hardware to its fullest, there are a ton of examples, but itÂ’s about approaching the process gradually. For instance, initially we didnÂ’t think that we were going to be able to do as much as we have been able to, which is something good about the PS3, because we werenÂ’t necessarily limited to what it says on paper.

As an example, we had originally planned to only include self-shadowing during the cutscenes, but once we actually started coding, we found that we were able to have cutscenes in real time, fully implemented throughout the entire game and while youÂ’re in the middle of the action. So itÂ’s really a matter of having a certain goal and then you try to see what you can get the hardware to do to achieve that goal, and by the time you look around you have smoke throughout the entire R&D floor.

Yes, in the interview, Hayashi had a lot to tell folks who're complaining that the Sony PS3 is hard to develop for. He says:

I think all those developers who are saying, "We donÂ’t want to do a PS3 game," or "ItÂ’s really difficult to do it," should shut up and make their games. If you have time to complain about it, then you should be spending your time working on getting the most from the hardware.

He also hinted that their upcoming ninja game for the PS3 is set to use the PS3's SIXAXIS in unique ways. He says that developers should go a step above just getting people's bodies involved with interacting with the game and start considering other functionalities. If most developers didn't challenged new hardwares, we would still be playing pong or Super Mario 2. Atari's founder complained and that company is nowhere it once was.

The computer developers are going to be thinking about multiple procesors like the duo and quad-core processers, vista soon. Most game developers will make the jump, some smaller one will be kicking and screaming like a little kid.

I don't think there will be much comparison, i've seen the old ninja gaiden and it looked good for it's time if this one looks better then there's a good chance it will look ALOT better than the previews i've watched of DMC4. Im a fan of DMC but i gotta say the new one does NOT look impressive at all. The graphics look only a step up from 3 which is not a bad thing, but they are certainly not the strongest next gen effort. All in all it will down to gameplay.

This is why ninja gaiden is gonna be a great ps3 game. They are actually taxing the hardware, really getting into it hard.

And what a great quote for all the whiny b itch xbox fans about how "hard" it is to make games for the PS3.... HAHAHA

Just like how you have to work harder to afford a PS3... Game developers just need to shut up and make the games.

Aside from graphics, i preferred DMC's style. But still, Team Ninja are the only guys who put fighter combinations in an actually action game, which by the way, is probably the most awesome thing to happen to an action game in 10 years.

As for DMC4, what i really hope they do is actually make all the styles available with a press of a button. Kindof like how we all imagined it until the *****ing game came out. On the fly stlyes would be great; Jumping between royal guard and gunslinger then pulling out some trickster!

ah, who am i kidding. It's still a capcom game. Which means there HAS to be something that makes it an 8 instead of a 10.

PS3 could handle gears since it uses UE3 and unreal tournament is coming out on PS3,PC,360 (some saying it looks better than gears with more characters on-screen and bigger maps). not being close to gears is a matter of opinion anyways since the artistic styles contrast and this game happens to be in 1080p60. with the new elite coming, looks like 360 wants to play some catch-up and become a half-***ed PS3.

Upping in your comment sounds like a simple thing like upscaling, surely you know, and overlook it, that NGS graphics is not simple upscaling. High Res textures, HDR, Self-Shadowing, etc and everything running beautifully at 1080p 60fps says something good about PS3 gear. I think this game is not even close to tax PS3 but is a very good first attempt from Tecmo people. I hope NGS be very successful so Tecmo give more Ninja love to PS3 people, not DOA please.
