N'gai Croal on Michael Pachter: Xbox and PS3 sales

Ó

N'gaiPachter's a pretty stand-up guy. He's the type who knows that he's in a position where he can say things and people will listen to him - and boy does he say things. Pachter's got cred - analyst, money-wise, business-y cred. N'gai Croal on the other hand, has a nice mix of journalistic and gamer credibility. So when the two meet, you just know that something blog-worthy is bound to come up.

The N'gai – Pachter interview covers everything from N64 and the DS all the way to the PS3 and the Xbox 360. It's a bit long so we'll show some of the more amusing from the interview. Let's start with something about the PS3:

Because of the phenomenal success of PlayStation and PlayStation 2, it's safe to assume that Playstation 3 has started at a higher point on the demand curve than Xbox 360. But it's also started at a lower point on the supply curve than the 360, and it's $200 more expensive than its main rival. Are you predicting the PS3's sales growth to be faster, slower or identical to the Xbox 360's?
I think PS3 sales will be similar to the 360 (around 200,000 a month in summer), primarily due to the price point and light lineup. Also, the PS3 has two other competing consoles, so it is unlikely that it will be far ahead.

And here's a little something about Pachter's high (a bit too high) expectations for the 360:

You recently told Gamasutra, "I'm pretty disappointed in the Xbox 360. I think Microsoft is doing everything right: Games are good; Xbox Live is amazing, and the console is not prohibitively expensive. Yet people are just not buying. The console is lagging behind my initial expectations by at least 200,000 units per month in the U.S., and I don't know why." Why did you have such high expectations for the consumer demand for the Xbox 360?
I thought that there were enough hard-core gamers indifferent to pricing to support much higher 360 sales at holiday. I truly thought "Gears of War" would be a driver, thought high-definition monitor sales would be a driver, and thought light PlayStation 3 supply (and high price) would work in the 360's favor.

» Its Simple...

your expectations my freind...[failed]....For a very simple reason..

Most of hardcore gamerz....and the average gamerz in general have a PS2...and the ps2 is still alive...in fact...this year may be the greatest ps2 year with the most technically dazzling games....[FFXII..Valkyrie Profile 2 which looks like a true anime....magnifesent]

so the main point....why would consumers Convert..????..to play a shooter-based system..???..i think we are underestimating the americans by saying they only love brainless shooters....FFXII sales...which exceeded GOW in sales...clearly says that American gamerz are into a more mature type of gaming.....one that is mainly found with the Playstation Brand...

so...i,m afraid your expectations were false....the PS2 outsell the xbox360 with 650.000 units sold this Chris...ofcourse...all of those ps2 ownerz will eventually upgrade to a PS3.....to play FFXIII&MGS4...and to keep their expensive beloved games.

consumers will enjoy the ps2...until the ps3 is more available in 2 years...then they,l upgrade......thus Sony has already guaranteed over 100Million PS3 owners..

as i said consumers have no reason to convert to a 360...a system that offers inferior functionality...made by a company that is not willing to lose money for its consumers...[MS makes 40$ from every unit..it was said by a MS excutive in an interview]..

so...i guess gamerz will be playing FFXII and god of war2 until MGS4 and GT5 arrive....its understandable...why buy it at launch...when you can enjoy the ps2 until i the ps3 is more available...

P.S: thankfully production issues with the PS3 have been resolved...By the end of the year...production rate will satisfy the incredible Demand..

oh well...that all...what..??..you want more...srry icant..oh well...

Man you are lame, you love to copy and paste don't you Broken. Just like a Broken record.

Wii + 360 are good competition for the PS3, the playstation has a long road before it will start making any ground on the competition. Of course major titles will help, but the 360 has Halo and the Wii has Mario. Wow, what a great year 2007 will be.

» I agree...

I agree with that statement. XBox360 does not have a diverse enough library to keep everyone happy. Some people do not like shooters and it is basically all that the 360 has to offer. And it needs more than just one or two games of other genres to keep player happy. The 360 has some great shooters (gears of war the most notable example) but other than that they dont have much. And they CERTAINLY dont have what it takes to keep the Jap loving games interested or the adventure or the plaformer. Banjo 360 and Assasins Creed cannot stand up to the Naughty Dog Project, Ratchet n Clank, Devil May Cry, etc. on thier own they need more content. And so far they havent delivered.

» II dunno

360(M$) says Wii wont last... i dont think they are a very happy couple. Wii(Nintendo) say they actually repect PS3(sony). I think they may be a better couple. 360 should know that Wiibashing is bad!

i wouldnt exactly say the ps3 has a diverse range. the main reason i ditched my ps2 for an xbox was to get to play on all the types of games i love which plstation dont do. and from the few exclusives u mention i really bdont see any reason do get a ps3 with such a weak future line up
