New Zealand PS3 launch: biggest sales spike ever

New Zealand PS3, PS2, and PSP sales prove all black is the way to go... - Image 1Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand (SCENZ) confirmed that the sales from the New Zealand launch of the PS3 caused "a spike in retail spending not previously witnessed at the launch of any other console in New Zealand," according to analyst group Gfk. In other words, in the 10 days from March 23 - the day of the official PS3 launch in New Zealand - until April 1, there were 4,835 PlayStation 3 consoles sold.

Gameplanet calls it an "unprecedented sales spike." This isn't too surprising considering the PS3's successful pre-order campaign in New Zealand.

There's more good news. PS3 games have taken over the sales charts. Daniel Morse from Gfk said, "Since launch, PS3 games have dominated GfK sales charts taking out all of the top ten places (console and handheld)." The two top sellers were Resistance: Fall of Man and MotorStorm, two games published by Sony Computer Entertainment.

What's the reason for the PS3's success? Warwick Light (General Manager Sales and Marketing, SCENZ) mentioned their advertising campaign and their interactive display units that let people "experience" the PS3. And after the sales success, Light has a right to be proud:

Combining games, photos, music, movies and the Internet, the PS3 is the ultimate entertainment hub in the living room. With the ability to have its functionality expanded through on-line upgrades, PlayStation 3 will be relevant for at least the next 10 years.

For the curious, here are the sales results from March 23, 2007, to April 1, 2007:
  • PlayStation 3: 4835
  • PlayStation 2: 1567
  • PlayStation Portable: 738
Apparently, the PS2 black and pink consoles and the PSP also continue to sell in New Zealand, making Sony the clear retail winner for this month. Here's what Morse had to say about that:

Our combined data for the month of March positions the PlayStation 2 (black) console second to the PS3 as the next highest selling console, with PlayStation 2 Pink and PlayStation Portable rounding out the top four giving PlayStation a clean sweep for the month.

How come the PS3 can only have high sales with a spike? If they were so great wouldn't they keep selling?

Ultimate entertainment hub with no games.

hardcore gamers are the truly force behind technological innovation, they spend a lot buying expensive gears giving industry the chance to recover partially from R+D investment, this is specially true in PS3, on the other hand Wii is the only thing that taxes consumers for nothing more than old gear with fancy controls, it is a shame. While I'm a PS fan, I much prefer x360 win this console war than Wii.

Now, after hardcore initial peak, PS3 sales must fall to an stable level, till a good amount of AAA titles come out. September can be that moment. I'm hopping a very big announcement about the CELLIUS project, do you remember that 3 titles that looked wonderful but no one said something official about them? But I'm specially hopping a price cut, at least 100$ in the 60G model, that will get a lot of more people into the PS3 camp, another peak that's for sure, and in holidays time.

Thats about 1/1000 people bought a PS3 here. I was quite surprised to see the amount fly out the door and our town is rather.. small. NZ = Land of the Sony, PSP is doing much better than DS here.

They don't how economy works. They only think anything above 100,000 means something without even thinking about how big the country is. Even if the country has only 10,000 people.

Im pritty sceptical on this. Yes i am a xbox fan boy, but anyways, my findings, as i live here in NZ.

5 people i know have 360's. 3 have wii's, 1 has a ps3.

If there are alot of people buying ps3's, i obviously dont know any of them... They do seem to be giving alot away though.

this is good for me... ps3 is doing considerably better compared to the 360 in the Australia/New Zealand region (taking into account the year headstart of the 360 incase people start shoving TOTAL sales figures again)... we all know that the rate of sale of the PS3 is better even after a huge difference in the tag price... even games that were already out in the 360 only sold when the PS3 came out... sony is solid in this region so it really pays off to have a PS3 here... nobody really bought into the XBox360 here... and everybody here knows about Europe and PS3... PS3 has got the PAL Regions covered and for us living in those territories we're it pays to have a Sony.

So don't give us all those BS about how XBox360 is doing in the US and stuff like that...

and i agree with blazeking not all americans are ignorant... only those kids who seem to be having too much free time on the internet... i mean most XBox360 owners who speak rubbish about the PS3 are probably just kids who are feeling insecure about their console... cause a parent wouldn't buy his child the high priced PS3 so this kids are just so insecure right now... here in Sydney most young professional has a PS3... these probably explains partly why some XBox fans are so immature...

# play station what ?Guest 2007-04-10 14:35
I live in nz and have found the ps3 marketing to be quite offensive realy, they make out that the ps3 is a generation above the 360, dispite the 360 having better graphics and games and an un paralleled online presence.

I only know of one person who has a ps3 i know of many with a 360 and a number with a wii.

I have used the demo units in shops and cant beleive why this console is so expensive, I found the controler hard to use mostly becuase of no rumble, I found the games on demo to be boring and visually unimpressive

So I dont beleive that this colsole realy compares in the market, as far as I can tell the only people buying ps3s are people who are ps2 fanboys and are getting a ps3 becuase the ps2 was "better" than the xbox 1

so much bitterness... just listen to urself, with all the bias ur spewing out it's gonna be hard to convince other people to believe you... don't believe the market news??? why because u only know ONE person who has a PS3??? what kind of a circle do you have!!!!

ur probably another kid who spends most of his time just trying on demos cause ur dear mom already bought u an xbox, same as ur other friends... ps3 marketing offensive???!!! sorry this hurts you... u are such a fanboy... get a job kid and do urself a favor and get a ps3 and just feel the power... then u compare.

i've got all the last gen and next gen consoles... and the PS3 is the one i bought another one again just to put in my room.

i don't really get a kick out of going to shops and playing demos... that's just for kids hoping and wishing.

# i think you might be the kidGuest 2007-04-10 16:31
Just to let you know im 27 and im a technical manager for an it firm.

Im no fan boy of any console, if anything im a pc fan.

Im sure that one day the ps3 will have some games that might warrant the price tag. However its been ~6 months since it was released and theres no games worth it. I was VERY excited when I saw the killzone 2 video and OMG I wanted one, however that was a marketing disaster and we havnt seen a thing since then

But you cant deny the number of games that were play station exclusive are now coming to 360 and in many cases launching on 360 first.

I know a number of people who are onto it with IT and gameing most of them prefer the pc to anything else however they all agree that the ps3 doesnt have much to offer.

If you look over this site you will see some screenshot and video comparisons of the same game on ps3 and 360 and you will notice that the 360 comes out on top.

You have 2 ps3s impressive, perhaps your money would have been better spent taking your girlfriend out to a nice expensive dinner 7 or 8 times.

there you go!!! now you sound like a sensible guy and not a bitter fanboy sounding so insecure and defensive.

as i said i've got an XBox and a Wii too cause my kids love their video games. I'm 29 and has been accustomed to playing on consoles and on the PC too... i'm actually spending a lot of time with C+C this days... personally I'm an RPG guy so an XBox is not gonna get thru...

as for the graphics i beg to argue cause just as you said if u look thru this site it also says that developers are still just starting to tap into the PS3's potential and with the specs i think it's clear that the power advantage goes to PS3... XBox360 has been for a while and i believe that developers are already s*****ing the jar of the 360.

the PS3 doesn't have a lot of titles now but as they say it's a next gen console which suppossedly has a lifespan of a couple of years... and I do believe that XBox is already playing catch up tech-wise.

one thing i'll agree with you though. my wife ain't so happy, should have taken here out to expensive dinner instead of just giving her a vase.

so we're both not kids and a sensible conversation is possible...

That's true, I reckon 1 in 10 people of NZ has a PS2, so it's no surprise PS3 is doing well there. PS3 is also catching up to 360 fast in Europe, especially UK.

it's actually pretty good because they only have a population of 4 million, so that means 1/100 bought one which are great statistics

# PS3 is NOT catching up with the 360 in Europe or the USA one bitGuest 2007-04-11 02:52
PS3 is selling NOWHERE near as many as the 360 in Europe or the UK, the 360 is constantly selling after the first week the PS3 has fallen to a trickle compared to 360 and when Wii is availible it will drop a lot further.
