Looks like Sony's PlayStation Home is doing well in its early beta stages. In its Beta 1.6 version, PlayStation Home allows beta testers to design their own "Home Space" with personal effects and furniture of their choice aside from customizing your character with a myriad of choices.

Avatars can also flit between their Home Space and other places using their "Home PSPs". The locations now available for checking out are the Game Lounge, Central Lounge, and the Theater Lounge. As hinted in the names, avatars engage in many different activities within the lounges, such as playing bowling, arcade games, as well as pool in the Game Lounge.

The Home PSPs are also customizable, much like real-life PSPs with the addition of being able to change the PSP color. Besides using it to go to other places, the Home PSP can be used to read news, tinker with options, and read messages.

PlayStation Home is also made to be integrated to the PS3's system, allowing users to add friends from, say, your in-game friends list so you can party with them at Home.

The beta still has a long way to go, though. With glitches causing some units to reset while relocating to a different lounge, Sony still has many things to fix to make Home a cozy and fun place for everybody.

Check out some screenshots of PlayStation Home Beta 1.6.

» Yep.

I just logged in to Home for the first time last night. It's ok, I guess. Threw some furniture around the room and changed the wallpaper. I checked out the Game Room and played bowling. It was alright, but I prefer the JamDat cellphone style of bowling better. Started playing the racing arcade game and the system froze around the second turn. Powered off and went to bed.

» Oh look

Notice how the "Home PSP" has a wallpaper and still maintains the XMB wave.. hmmm that isnt even possible in a real PSP.

Looks like "Playstation Home" users have been downgrading and upgrading to Custom Firmware.. tsk tsk

That looks incredibly stupid. Look at the guy with his thumbs up.

You do know this whole thing started as a cancelled game right? All sony did was modify a game they couldn't do anything else with into a tacked on online service that lets you walk around a virtual world and use a PSP menu. REVOLUTIONARY! SONY'S LEADING THE WAY!

Don't take my word for it though, you'll know it sucks when you try it out for yourselves. I couldn't be excited about it if I had a PS3.

Mister Common Sense why are you so negative?

what are you doing in the video game world?

just play what you like and relax a bit

by nio - 2007-07-25 00:19

You can have XMB waves and a wallpaper. Although, it'll have to be on hacked firmware.

i wont seeing as you have no proof and it actually started on the PS2 but it wasn't powerful enough for what they needed to do

Not trying to be totally negative, but seriously, what's the point?

What can you do here that you can't do with Live? Chat, view and download movies, play games, anything else? Why all the hype?

Someone please seriously answer my question for once. I think sony's efforts would be better spent elsewhere.

That should be obvious the best feature of home is that MCS won't be there.

by Nineveh - 2007-07-25 02:01
» cool concept

I believe i got into the second wave of testers (dl appeared in psn earlier lsat week sometime)

pretty cool concept for this. I like how you can play a game but still hold a conversation with someone else in the area. ( was playing pool with someone and could still converse with someone who was playing at a different table)

by andrewsqual - 2007-07-25 03:07

lets see the differance???? You get it for free you idiot.

by Jimmyboi - 2007-07-25 03:13
» Hmmmm

Doesn't look bad, but I can see it being a tad overated. I normally find myself getting excited about things like this only to be dissapointed after an hrs play. Still for people who enjoy mini-games such as pool while chatting, this is for you. As far as i'm concerned, I'd rather be down the pub doing it.

guys, just ignore him, he's lieing on purpose 'started as a cancelled game' dumbest ***** i have ever heard...and of course its dumb, he just made it up. all the interviews about home have told us it started as it is today, just on a smaller level - it was planned o nthe ps2, wasn't possible so its been revamped on the PS3 - ANYONE who says this is dumb would have to agree that myspace and the like are also dumb..home is a 3D social network...a 3D myspace, and we all know how popular that is.

just ignore Mr. Common Sense...we all know he is pathetic for wasting his time coming he a posting lies and pointless comments, dont reply to him, dont aknowledge him, you should feel sorry for him and hope he finds help soon.

» WTF?

Can someone say old? The Home beta has been out for a long time. Even this '1.6' update. (How can it be 1.6 if 1 never even came out...)

» Interesting

While I am predominantly a 360 user as I have yet to find good use from my ps3 I do say kudos to Sony for starting to unify their online services. It makes sense and really helps to build a user base so kudos to those who only own a ps3 or use their PS3 as their main machine on getting what they deserve and for free at that.

Like some people have said here, I like my 360 better so I'm simply going to play that, be content, and yes I don't mind paying a mere 50$ a year to get great service via Xbox live.

Hi User,

It's refreshing to find a 360 fan who realizes that other folks' taste may be different from his/her own and doesn't ridicule them for that.

Thanks for the even-minded post and have a nice day!

Why all the hype about Home?? So why all the hype about Halo 3. Don't tell me there's no other game like Halo 3. It's just another FPS running around killing aliens or whatever it is in that game. So you're saying that hyping up home is a bad thing but hyping up Halo is a good thing.

by someone - 2007-07-25 06:50
» not V1.6 it is V0.6

All the pictures are taken for version 0.6 not 1.6. There are no personal effects in your home, just some pictures Sony gives you to play around with nothing more.

So why are you here again?

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-07-25 08:27
» .

Sony admitted Home started as a game they shelved! I didn't make that up!

Ok, so in its most basic form it's free. But is that all it can offer over Live? Are you going to have to pay to change clothes, for different hairstyles, for furniture, etc? What is the advantage of having a nice looking virtual apartment? Can you meet virtual sluts online and take them back to your apartment to score? That could be a selling point for some of you fantards that don't leave the house.

Sounds overhyped to me!

Why r u always bashing the ps3???? If u like ur 360 so much, then y arent u playing it instead of going to the ps3 channel to bash the ps3... No one cares about idiotic opinions so GO AWAY!!!!!!!

» Not Again

I can have my friends come to my "home" and watch whatever I have on my hdd. Can you do that with live, I don't know maybe you can, but I don't troll the 360 portion of this website, because I could care less. MCS we are all glad you care, but now you're just being a tool. It's hard to understand Home if you don't understand the concept of "friends", this is the problem we are having here. You will never understand all Home can do becuase you are obviously a manic depressive shut-in, who some how blames Sony for the fact no one likes him. A word of advice, it's not Sony....It's you.

by Datnizzle - 2007-07-25 10:35
» A lot to go over

First of all, the first time I tried to post this comment my window got really small and told me I had critical errors. I tried to close the box only to be redirected to another webpage, without my consent. Qj, you guys just let your advertisers get away with anything ,huh.

Now on to MCS. You have to understand friendship to understand Home. Does the 360 allow you to watch any movie on your harddrive with people all over the world at the same time. All the time chatting on a bluetooth. That may not sound fun to you, being as people hate you and all. But those of us who live for more than spending hours bashing something we never plan on buying, or trying to convince people that a product that you buy from the store broken is OK because you can send it back, and they send you someone else's broken 360 that they "fixed" even though they don't know what broke it in the first place.

ON a lighter note, I doubt you get "excited" at all.

» Sweet

Its nice to know Mister Common Sense and his legion of alter egos that he creates on QJ are jealous of this service. It must be lonely to fight a battle for the 360 alone. Even the nefarious Peter Moore jumped ship seeing a burning building with the 360. I guess if you're going to be stupid you may as well be alone in it. Hats off to you, the lone ranger, Mr No Common Sense. Who wants to pay for an online service when you get this for free? Well Id say Mr Common Sense and all 3 million of the accounts he made. Go Dude Go.

In case you haven't noticed that is how the English language works.

No new ideas? Nothing else bad to say about Sony? Are we resorting to criticizing proper English now? What a loser!

The fact that you supposedly own an PS3 doesn't make you any less of a troll or a tool! Go away!

by Death2494 - 2007-07-25 14:17
» Had to address this...

The 360 only allows you to chat with one other person during video chat.Ps3 allows for up to 6 people in a chat.you can only use microsoft periphials on their system.Ps3 you can use the xbox live vision cam on it and it still works fine. You can't host a clan meeting on xbox live. You can host a clan meeting in home in you apartment decked out with you clans symbol.Home allows for a clan to have a meeting, discuss their strategy, launch a multi-player game to try to execute it, go back to home and discuss what they did right and what they did wrong. That's freaking awesome i don't care how you put it.If you check i do own a 360 also and i'm not completly bashing it but ps3's online is uhh how do i put it......superior.

I understand that you're going through a tough time right now.Daddy got tired of watching mommy's tits hang lower and lower, so he decided to invest in something younger. But he claims that it is his job that keep from home and out late.Mommy saw it comming but she put's on a smile for company to hide there marriage problems.Yet after everyone is gone she drowns herself in alcohol to forget about the pain.Divorce is inevitable so little 12 yr old jacob aka mister common sense lashes out the only way he knows how, on a game forum, desperately seeking attention hoping that someone recognizes his existence and see that this is indeed a cry for help.Cant wait to see you on the news at some college campus ready any and your own life because the girlfriend you had lost interest in you and moved on.Congrats my good ma..........Congrats.

You mean Mister Common Sense and The Real Mister Common Sense doesn't qualify as multiple accounts?

by mr toasty - 2007-07-26 12:00

Why not? Things like Second Life and Habbo Hotel have achieved popularity. There's no specific reason for it, it's just a fun thing to do.

by mr toasty - 2007-07-26 12:09
» also

In the time it took me to write my message, like 4 or 5 other sony fanboys came flaming. I bet if people actually stopped screaming wildly and asked questions, this place would be much better.

What I wanted to add though, is that it's a bit like an MMORPG. For example in FFXI you have a linkshell, where a bunch of people can chat no matter where they are. People play these games quite a bit for the interaction, the idea that even if you're across the game world from someone and doing something totally different, you can just pop by and see what they're doing.

This isn't meant to be a jab at Xbox live, but you can't really do that sort of thing with an online lobby and a chat system. Unless there's a spectate mode in Live arcade. Is there?
