New PSN ad makes a hit against Xbox Live fees? |

The console war may be heating up hotter and faster than we previously thought, and it seems that Sony's on the offensive as far as citing the other parties' shortcomings are concerned.
We see this in a very subtle way via the latest PlayStation Network advertisement, where the tagline speaks of online play on the PlayStation 3 being completely free - as opposed to on the Xbox 360, where players have to pay an annual subscription free to experience the same. Ouch.
Well, we can't really say that it's a deliberate hit against Microsoft's Xbox Live subscription fees (it could be just, you know, a very convenient coincidence).
But the fact that you do have to pay to play online on Xbox Live does give Sony a lot to crow about. Of course, one doesn't really need to pay for an Xbox Live Gold subscription - Xbox Live Silver is free and gives players the ability to not only chat with their friends, but also access downloadable content - but yeah, you do need to shell out some extra moolah for online joy.
If anything, we hope that Microsoft sees the ad and takes it as a challenge to make online play a bit more accessible. Fingers crossed!

it's just promoting the PSN... you can look at it at dissin Live but to me it's nothing more than a a company like Toyoto advertising a car's engine power or Pioneer promoting their products surround sound.
when you're selling somthing you emphasize the good points and more often than not you get to step on someone's toes.

I know it's not just PSN that has/had problems, because some games just plain suck for online when they get released. But PSN did have the whole 'unalbe to log on/connection dropped/timed out' issue last year, which really sucked. But hey, so did XboxLive a couple weeks ago. (that was a major piss off hehe) I think I'm rambling on too much, it's late, it happens.
Anyway, PSN seems to be running quite well now after the many updates. So, now is a great time to be advertising this option. It's also good timing for the hopefully soon to be released Playstation Home and the whole syncronicity with the PSP anywhere/anytime stuff.

The only thing is I use it a lot, with warhawk that I never get tired with that game and tekken...

i prefer PSN over Live a hundred times anyway because of one aspect alone.... the community.
Live has a very ugly community... it doesn't hurt that PSN has mostly young professionals so there is a minimum on the trash (they're the ones who can afford a PS3 anyway)... playing Halo can never compare to playing Warhawk not because of the game but because of the community and the difference in athmosphere is so noticeable.

But really, online gaming isn't a "feature" - it's my DSL line, my router and (in the case of the 360) I've paid for the wireless connector - why the hell should I pay a gateway to play games online? If companies can get the multi-platform games (Orange Box) working properly on Sony's kit, I'll go Sony every time.
Hope that doesn't make me sound like a "seed" - I'd hate to think that expressing a moderately pro-Sony opinion makes me look like a puppet ¬_¬

used to be more hectic around here... flame wars left and right but everybody seems to have mellowed down since late last year.
but you can be pretty sure all the regulars here knows who prefers which console.

Now for the ugly community as you call them I can definitely see what you are talking about I have seen a lot in XBL and yes especially in Halo 3's community and the truth is.... well what you said!
But dont you think that when the ps3's price is affordable for the general and ugly public that its community's quality would drop to XBl's levels? I think its only time thats the way it goes...So lets enjoy Warhawk for now and worry or rather be annoyed later...:)

Online should always be free.

As for PSN being free "coz it sucks", well thats why it has dedicated servers too that gets u in games quick
Im convinced that Quixand has xbox too, coz hes rite,Live cmunity is horrible. Sounds like a zoo all the time with occasional squeeky voices and yanks dissing any brits. (really pisses me off). "c'mon rematch then u douche son of a Brit" 3vs3 and we beat em(close) - at least it stopped them from harrasing us for half hr!

Better online play...
The game doesn't lose online play when the company sees fit.
30 - 50 dollars equals out to only 8 - 13 cents a day.
If Sony charged 5 cents a day for their service as it is right now, i'd laugh. But then again, all my ps3 does is play blu rays.

-> Not really true. The content may be more than PSN, but 100x is an exaggeration.
"Better online play..."
-> That's an outright lie. Online play is online play. I have both consoles, have played online on both and my opinion is, neither console's online play sucks. Both are good.
"The game doesn't lose online play when the company sees fit."
-> Well, so far that hasn't happened yet. So I don't think a POTENTIAL disadvantage counts as an actual disadvantage.
"30 - 50 dollars equals out to only 8 - 13 cents a day."
-> And 8-13 cents a day equates to 50-60 dollars a year. All a matter of perspective. Everything BIG can be broken down to a pretty small amount when you consider it on a daily basis, even a mortgage on a house! So I don't think this reasoning is sound. XBL IS wrong in charging money for this, and there's no two ways about it.
"If Sony charged 5 cents a day for their service as it is right now, i'd laugh. But then again, all my ps3 does is play blu rays."
-> And that's the part that exposes you as an XFanboy. Your PS3 (and I seriously doubt you have one) may be playing only Blu-rays - mine plays Blu-ray movies, and plays games as well - e.g. Uncharted, COD4, Oblivion, Resistance, Motorstorm, Darkness, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet and Clank, Warhawk, and that's only games I own. I haven't counted rented games yet - Unreal III, Untold Legends, Spidey 3, etc. Also, don't give me the idiotic argument of a multiplatform game being better on a 360. Except for a few poorly ported games (EA, for example), most games are equally good.
Your turn.

If there is a price drop under $299 (and it better be the 40GB since that's how much it should have been), then it would definitely win out simply for the fact that it has 20GB more space, and since gamers love plenty of space (just look at how successful the 360 Elite was), the PS3 would pound-for-pound be a better deal than either the 360 or the Wii. We'll just have to wait and see.

One thing that I hate even more is when people say that XBL is way better than PSN or somthing along those lines.. Because to me there the same. XBL has more content because it was out longer and has more chat options that are going to the PSN very soon. Those only two differences arent somthing that'd make me say its better... I play online games, thats about all. I'd rather have it free. Still having it free, in my opinion it matchs up with XBL untill Home comes along.

It's a war, don't be supprised....
Still, I had an x360, and an xbox, but I never played online because of the fees (why fees? PC is free...). I only play on my ps3 for online since it's free (dah, like PC, it's the way to go, it's the same for the wii). So I'd say that the PSN is superior to XBL, not in content (pretty much the same), but in convinience (it's free).

Since you dont have a 360 any longer, you dont have any access to cancel the membership, so you still need to pay. Then you could try logging on Xbox Live on the internet on the microsoft page... here you will get the options to EXTEND your membership and payment method. There is NO place where you can cancel it through this service. Not even a hit or mentioned in FAQ how and where to do this.
So you're proable to get frustrated and sends a mail to them telling them you want to cancel your account. Is this enough? ***** no. You need to call them, because you cant cancel your payment information online, because it's too "vital"(And I thought online handling with credit card was normal by todays standards?).
My point in all this *****tyness is simply that this situation would NEVER occour if only the online service was free to begin with. And damn... I only subscribed 1 random month to play CoD4 beta ages ago, and just that month I finally payed for Xbox Live Gold for the first time, the machine dies on me.
