New PSN ad makes a hit against Xbox Live fees?

The console war may be heating up hotter and faster than we previously thought, and it seems that Sony's on the offensive as far as citing the other parties' shortcomings are concerned.

We see this in a very subtle way via the latest PlayStation Network advertisement, where the tagline speaks of online play on the PlayStation 3 being completely free - as opposed to on the Xbox 360, where players have to pay an annual subscription free to experience the same. Ouch.

Well, we can't really say that it's a deliberate hit against Microsoft's Xbox Live subscription fees (it could be just, you know, a very convenient coincidence).

But the fact that you do have to pay to play online on Xbox Live does give Sony a lot to crow about. Of course, one doesn't really need to pay for an Xbox Live Gold subscription - Xbox Live Silver is free and gives players the ability to not only chat with their friends, but also access downloadable content - but yeah, you do need to shell out some extra moolah for online joy.

If anything, we hope that Microsoft sees the ad and takes it as a challenge to make online play a bit more accessible. Fingers crossed!

# Xbox Live Gold = BlechKaruto 2008-01-21 18:00
Now, before the Xbox 360 fanboys attack me, I do own a 360 myself. I'm just saying, if Microsoft is going to go ahead and allow all of these in-game advertisements on the new titles, they should go ahead and make Xbox Live Gold free. It only makes sense because Sony allows it. That's the only way they're going to come out on top in 2009 instead of Sony.

I'm surprised it took them this long to use this as an advertising thing. I would've been using first thing, also boast about how it has built in wi-fi. This is coming from someone who doesn't even have a PS3 yet :P

taking a shot at live...

it's just promoting the PSN... you can look at it at dissin Live but to me it's nothing more than a a company like Toyoto advertising a car's engine power or Pioneer promoting their products surround sound.

when you're selling somthing you emphasize the good points and more often than not you get to step on someone's toes.

SONY is doing nothing more than advertising their PSN features...they are letting people know it's free which is very useful for leverage in this console war.

Calling this an attack is as dumb as calling a TV commercial of an exclusive game an attack... The company is simply advertising it's products/features whether a competing company has them or not.

I honestly it shouldn't come a much of a surprise that it took so long. They're smart for waiting so long to advertise this. Of course they ran the whole online testing before the PS3 was launched, but the real test happens after the launch, with the millions of PS3 users (just an assumption,I never checked how many). Anything could have gone wrong during the first year of the PS3, and there were many problems with the online service. Hold back, see how it goes & then run the ad. I'm sure this ad was ready even before the launch.

I know it's not just PSN that has/had problems, because some games just plain suck for online when they get released. But PSN did have the whole 'unalbe to log on/connection dropped/timed out' issue last year, which really sucked. But hey, so did XboxLive a couple weeks ago. (that was a major piss off hehe) I think I'm rambling on too much, it's late, it happens.

Anyway, PSN seems to be running quite well now after the many updates. So, now is a great time to be advertising this option. It's also good timing for the hopefully soon to be released Playstation Home and the whole syncronicity with the PSP anywhere/anytime stuff.

I had XBL gold for a year, but I dont play online alot, just sometime. Can't really say its a much better service than PSN, just better friend list and chat functionality. Online play is online play, you can play against ppl online thats good enough for me. PSN is pretty good for being free since I dont play online alot, dont need to pay 60 bucks for something that I rarely use.

I had the gold but not now.. I don't feel to pay another 50 for a service that doesn't work in that time.. my year expired in december... and it is the same online play... nothing more, nothing less... the only thing, just the social that will change with home... and with in game chat but that come with a firmware in the future...

The only thing is I use it a lot, with warhawk that I never get tired with that game and tekken...

people taking all the smiley of gitaroo and someone_pr away when they are just stating their preference? i gave you both a click...

i prefer PSN over Live a hundred times anyway because of one aspect alone.... the community.

Live has a very ugly community... it doesn't hurt that PSN has mostly young professionals so there is a minimum on the trash (they're the ones who can afford a PS3 anyway)... playing Halo can never compare to playing Warhawk not because of the game but because of the community and the difference in athmosphere is so noticeable.

Quite frankly I think Sony held out because of word of mouth, a lot of PS3 fans have been talking about PSN being free and how good it is, they didn't need to advertise. Also advertising it could be considered a direct attack on Xbox Live (intentional or unintentional), which could possibly force Microsoft to make their service completely free, therefore eliminating one of Sony's advantages. It does come to a point when you do need to get the word out there about the network and word of mouth isn't enough and you are forced to advertise, which is what happens here.

You know I have a PS3, and I don't know if it's just me but it annoys me that Sony is already using HOME as a selling point when it aint even public yet, it gives the wrong impression, people are going to be thinking that the PS3 will come with HOME out of the box, it's somewhat false advertising.

I've been saying for ages that this is one of the PS3's main strengths. I don't play online much (the occasional Warhawk game not withstanding) so I won't pay Microsoft for the service, but it would be nice to play Halo 3 online again (I used the 2 day trial that came with the game).

But really, online gaming isn't a "feature" - it's my DSL line, my router and (in the case of the 360) I've paid for the wireless connector - why the hell should I pay a gateway to play games online? If companies can get the multi-platform games (Orange Box) working properly on Sony's kit, I'll go Sony every time.

Hope that doesn't make me sound like a "seed" - I'd hate to think that expressing a moderately pro-Sony opinion makes me look like a puppet ¬_¬

Online (at least this generation) will not be enough for either sony or Ms to win anything so even if MS removes the online fees nothing dramatic will occur.... You want big changes try a price cut if rumors wanting the ps3 and the 360 to drop bellow $300 come true (premium 360) then we might actually see both consoles finally catch up to the wii...

The truth is that live is superior to psn (for now that is) in terms of content and community interaction but thats because of the 4 plus years of XBL....Imagine 4 years out there and PSN is already catching up!

Now for the ugly community as you call them I can definitely see what you are talking about I have seen a lot in XBL and yes especially in Halo 3's community and the truth is.... well what you said!

But dont you think that when the ps3's price is affordable for the general and ugly public that its community's quality would drop to XBl's levels? I think its only time thats the way it goes...So lets enjoy Warhawk for now and worry or rather be annoyed later...:)

I can't even believe a "silver" accnt exists! They try to make it look like they're giving you something by allowing you to see what they have. Thats like a candy store having passes to stare through a window at their merchandise while only gold status members can actually have any.

I was still curious due to the claims made from this forum of Live's super giggidy giggidy......but as Gitaroo says online play IS online play. No matter how much the population is, ur gaming is not gna increase/decrease in fun. Infact its better when i try in morning when population is lower - it gets u in a game A LOT QUICKER.

As for PSN being free "coz it sucks", well thats why it has dedicated servers too that gets u in games quick

Im convinced that Quixand has xbox too, coz hes rite,Live cmunity is horrible. Sounds like a zoo all the time with occasional squeeky voices and yanks dissing any brits. (really pisses me off). "c'mon rematch then u douche son of a Brit" 3vs3 and we beat em(close) - at least it stopped them from harrasing us for half hr!

100 Times the content...

Better online play...

The game doesn't lose online play when the company sees fit.

30 - 50 dollars equals out to only 8 - 13 cents a day.

If Sony charged 5 cents a day for their service as it is right now, i'd laugh. But then again, all my ps3 does is play blu rays.

I have both a PS3 and a 360, and after I started playing online on the PS3 for free, I didn't renew my XLive Gold subscription after it ran its course. Sony is doing this for free! Why can't Microsoft do the same?

# Not reallyThinker 2008-01-22 04:31
" 100 Times the content.."

-> Not really true. The content may be more than PSN, but 100x is an exaggeration.

"Better online play..."

-> That's an outright lie. Online play is online play. I have both consoles, have played online on both and my opinion is, neither console's online play sucks. Both are good.

"The game doesn't lose online play when the company sees fit."

-> Well, so far that hasn't happened yet. So I don't think a POTENTIAL disadvantage counts as an actual disadvantage.

"30 - 50 dollars equals out to only 8 - 13 cents a day."

-> And 8-13 cents a day equates to 50-60 dollars a year. All a matter of perspective. Everything BIG can be broken down to a pretty small amount when you consider it on a daily basis, even a mortgage on a house! So I don't think this reasoning is sound. XBL IS wrong in charging money for this, and there's no two ways about it.

"If Sony charged 5 cents a day for their service as it is right now, i'd laugh. But then again, all my ps3 does is play blu rays."

-> And that's the part that exposes you as an XFanboy. Your PS3 (and I seriously doubt you have one) may be playing only Blu-rays - mine plays Blu-ray movies, and plays games as well - e.g. Uncharted, COD4, Oblivion, Resistance, Motorstorm, Darkness, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet and Clank, Warhawk, and that's only games I own. I haven't counted rented games yet - Unreal III, Untold Legends, Spidey 3, etc. Also, don't give me the idiotic argument of a multiplatform game being better on a 360. Except for a few poorly ported games (EA, for example), most games are equally good.

Your turn.

My PS3 also streams songs and home movies from my Laptop, and I can (and do) catch them on my PSP via Remote as well. Also, there's lots of other things it can do, but I guess you need to take an active interest for that (and maybe actually OWN the console?).

I didn't renew my Xbox Live Gold subscription back in September due to the same position as Thinker. If PSN is free, why do it for the 360 when most of the games I play are either on the PS3 or on both systems?

If there is a price drop under $299 (and it better be the 40GB since that's how much it should have been), then it would definitely win out simply for the fact that it has 20GB more space, and since gamers love plenty of space (just look at how successful the 360 Elite was), the PS3 would pound-for-pound be a better deal than either the 360 or the Wii. We'll just have to wait and see.

I see a whole bunch of people at my school that are like "Ps3 sucks". There dumb as hell cause I bet half of there as5es never even used a ps3 or dont own one.

One thing that I hate even more is when people say that XBL is way better than PSN or somthing along those lines.. Because to me there the same. XBL has more content because it was out longer and has more chat options that are going to the PSN very soon. Those only two differences arent somthing that'd make me say its better... I play online games, thats about all. I'd rather have it free. Still having it free, in my opinion it matchs up with XBL untill Home comes along.

Still, I had an x360, and an xbox, but I never played online because of the fees (why fees? PC is free...). I only play on my ps3 for online since it's free (dah, like PC, it's the way to go, it's the same for the wii). So I'd say that the PSN is superior to XBL, not in content (pretty much the same), but in convinience (it's free).

If you're one of the lucky bastards such as myself who have gotten their Xbox 360 to light up 3 rings of death to you(and even several times), while having a Xbox Live Gold membership, you're in for a retarded ride.

Since you dont have a 360 any longer, you dont have any access to cancel the membership, so you still need to pay. Then you could try logging on Xbox Live on the internet on the microsoft page... here you will get the options to EXTEND your membership and payment method. There is NO place where you can cancel it through this service. Not even a hit or mentioned in FAQ how and where to do this.

So you're proable to get frustrated and sends a mail to them telling them you want to cancel your account. Is this enough? ***** no. You need to call them, because you cant cancel your payment information online, because it's too "vital"(And I thought online handling with credit card was normal by todays standards?).

My point in all this *****tyness is simply that this situation would NEVER occour if only the online service was free to begin with. And damn... I only subscribed 1 random month to play CoD4 beta ages ago, and just that month I finally payed for Xbox Live Gold for the first time, the machine dies on me.

That experience is the reason I did not get a 360. PSN is great, 32-40 players no lag. That's the biggest difference, the person with the bad connection suffers. Not the whole match like Live.
