New PS3 wattage findings may help lower electricity consumption |

To be honest, how much electricity our next-gen consoles consume while we play is a totally debatable issue. But after conducting a few updated wattage tests on an unwitting Sony PlayStation 3, the guys at Aeropause managed to discover two significant points about wattage.
First off, when a Sony PS3 is turned off but is still plugged in, it only consumes a single watt of electricity. That's pretty Impressive considering that other electronics still consume a more significant amount of electricity on their standby modes. But keep in mind that when your PlayStation 3 is in standby mode with Remote Start enabled, the consumption spikes to 24W.
Secondly, if you're an avid protein folder, you might find this little tip interesting. Running Folding@Home on your PS3 will consume about 215W using the standard visual mode. But you can save humanity with a discount if you enable the Sony PS3's screensaver mode. That's a 30W drop from 215W to 185W.
Suddenly turned budget conscious? While we're not recommending that you play in the dark or without your speakers turned on, we do encourage you to try disabling Remote Start in standby and enabling screensaver while you take part in the fight against cancer.

You be surprise how it cuts the bill down.

So, it's either off, or it's on (WLAN constantly running), or it's also enabled via Internet. I think the whole idea of Remote Play (RP) LOCALLY is plain stupid:
'Check this out! I can access the PS3 with my PSP across the room!'
'Cool, bro. But... why are you sitting there with a 4.3" screen instead of playing it with the Sixaxis on the big HDTV?'
'Well... uh... yeah... that's... because I can?"
See what I mean? The only use for RP and RS is if you have Internet RS enabled. Still, for some completely idiotic reason, the WLAN is constantly running, causing not only the bill to go up, but also it makes a lot of noise! Yeah, it does, and if you haven't heard it, listen carefully. What I want is this feature:
*Enable RS
[ ] Enable RS via WLAN
[ ] Enable RS via Internet
*Disable RS
...because that would cut the bill costs, save the environment and make our PS3s sound almost nothing. If you only want RS to work via the Internet, and your PS3 is connected with a network cable, what's the point with having WLAN constantly running? I think it's a disaster that this feature is not available, causing the machine to run with 24 times the normal energy amount. I sure do hope Sony is reading this, is there any way to contact them about this?
And by the way, that "single watt" means the standby mode, right? So, if you switch it off with the mechanical switch on the back of the PS3, it counsumes 0.00000000 W of energy, just as if it were completely unplugged?

Well, I would like to turn it on from outside the house, but preferrably not at the cost of 24W and a humming PS3. Those 24W could be reduced drastically to... well, not 1W as with standby, but maybe 5W? I don't know, I just see no reason whatsoever to use WLAN when it's connected to my router via cable. The only reason WLAN is on in RS-mode is to start it up remotely with the PSP - from within sixty feet. At this distance you might as well skip Remote Play and play normally with a sixaxis. Thus, WLAN is unnecessary whereas RS with cable connection is not. Right now, we can't disable WLAN when RS is activated, and that sucks for many reasons.
