Dragon's Lair on HD DVD format - Image 1For those who are not familiar with the game Dragon's Lair, well now may be a good time to read up on it since it's making a come-back soon. To give you a short background of the title, Dragon's Lair is one of the first laser disc arcade games released back in 1983. The story revolves around the hero Dirk the Daring, who is on a quest to save Princess Daphne from the dragon Singe. The game featured animation by the former Disney animator, Don Bluth.

Anyway, we just got word that Digital Leisure, Inc., the owner of all licensed versions of Dragon's Lair, will be releasing the video game on Sony's favorite digital format, Blu-ray, or specifically Blu-ray Disc Java (BDJ). BDJ, as you all know, is how developers manage to put interactive content onto the Sony format.

Anyway, Digital Leisure added that the game will still be playable on DVD format and contains lots of "exciting special features." It would be remembered that the same company released a version of Dragon's Lair some time ago, except that it was in HD DVD format and sold for US$ 49.95. The Blu-Ray version, on the other hand, is yet to receive a retail price as well as a release date.

Dragon's Lair is considered a trailblazer in its own right. When it was first released, it featured Disney-like animation and was the first one that allowed players to control a fully-realized character. Fast forward to 2007, and Dirk and his friends (and foes) are now once again, leaping into the age of next-gen.

I emailed Digital Leisure and it is only for Blu-ray players so I'm not sure what you mean by "will still be playable on DVD". Also, the HD DVD has not been released by them as of yet...it is still only for Pre-order on the website.
