Netflix plans to offer video download service via PS3, Xbox 360 - Image 1Online rental service Netflix recently had its Q3 2007 Earnings Call and the most exciting bit we got from the transcript of said meeting is the company's plan to deliver videos to its subscribers through Internet-connected HD-DVD and Blu-ray devices.

This service will of course include both Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3. Netflix President, CEO, and Board Chairman Reed Hastings said that one of their primary goals is to give users access to online movies for the lowest price possible. He explained further:

In terms of enabling the viewing of online content on the television screen, we are exploring a variety of options, including Internet-connected, high-definition DVD players, Internet-connected game consoles, and dedicated Internet set tops, with a variety of partners, trying to understand the best ways to provide inexpensive viewing of online content on the television.

As much as this is a good and exciting proposition from Netflix, we have to keep in mind that Microsoft and Sony are already offering videos on Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network. Microsoft's online service even has a feature for downloading full movies.

We are quite uncertain if the two gaming giants are willing to collaborate with this endeavor.

» Internet Is Too Slow

I'm on dsl and it would probably take 3 days to download a hd movie on my PS3. I would rather go rent them.

» Ryan... you always do this

It's just "said" not "the said."

» Meh

I've seen Netflix's "Play It Now" video quality and it's about the quality of a 1.4 GB DVD rip. I doubt they will be putting HD quality video on there if this ever happens. Trailers are one thing.

I would like to play more movies on my PS3 in addition to Blu-ray though.

» this would be great

I have a NetFlix account but have yet to use the PlayItNow services b/c I don't have my PC near my TV and wouldn't dare watch an entire movie in my desk chair. Good call NetFlix
