netfli-ps3Netflix has announced that they are planning to release a software-only version of their online video rental service for the PS3 this October. Speaking in the company's recent earnings call, CEO Reed Hastings said:

“Before our next [earnings] call in October, we expect to be launching a major new version of our Sony PS3 user interface which doesn’t require a disc, and is dynamically updated continuously with the latest Netflix UI improvements.”

Netflix is expected to reveal more details about the upcoming update in the coming weeks, stay tuned.

however every console of this generation have the capability of this..
So..
1. Why only the ps3.
2. Why only now? why not... when consoles first got netflix..

anyway, cool, means i don't have to worry about saving this disc in case i decide to downgrade to netflix.
(didn't even have to finish my account and the shipped a disc to me xD, never did finish it cause i noticed they over charge compared to services out here.)

Finally. It would make it easier to not have to use a disc. :-)

especially when you use the cd too many times it leaves a burn mark on the disk and doesn't work and you have to order a new disc everytime that happpens....

I don't understand why they had to release it on a disk in the first place. Maybe so there would be less competition for Sony's online rental? I don't know...but whatever the case, I'm glad it's finally going diskless. I'm lazy and don't want to have to change my disks in my PS3 every time my girlfriend wants to watch a movie. :D

Microsoft bought exclusive rights to have Netflix run without a disc, dumbasses. However a loophole was found where they could still support the PS3 & Wii, and that was with a disc.

really man thats the best u came up with thats the most moronic thing ive heard. The service came later on the ps3 because obviously ps3 is still not at its full potential, and they are just getting to it now because with all the updates for 3d to take over they had to focus ont that first. now that netflix has a huge fanbase they can spend time working on something that people use everyday
