Neil Thompson: Sony's edge is its established brand

"The biggest threat that Sony has for us is the brand thatÂ’s been established around it," says Neil Thompson, Microsoft's regional head of entertainment for the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The Microsoft bigwig may not be the most level-headed person to voice out his opinion on Sony's PS3 console but he still dished out a mouthful regarding Sony's freshly released (at least for the PAL regions) game machine. He explained that the biggest and most important advantages in the console war are on the Xbox 360's side: A great online gaming experience and a bigger game library.

At the same time, he criticized the Sony online model, describing the PlayStation Home network as "a virtual world where you can do everything except gaming."

Thompson, however, did admit that the PS3 has the advantage in terms of graphics because of its now-famous high-definition visuals, but hinted that Xbox's advantages would outweigh that edge.

"In the technology and gaming thereÂ’s really little in the PS3 where I can say, Â‘Gosh, I wish we had thatÂ’," concludes Thompson.

He didn't say the PS3 has the advantage in terms of graphics. What kinda of BS are you trying to spin?

How did you get that he said PS3 had the graphic advantage from that statement?

Anyone...and I mean *anyone* who buys a console simply because it's a certain brand is stupid. I don't just mean regular stupid...it takes a special kind of extra stupid.

Brand means absolutely squat. You buy consoles because of what games are on the system. Microsoft may have buying power in scooping up a few developers to give them exclusives, but you'd buy the 360 because of that game, not because MS is on the side.

In the same respect, some developers love Sony and will continue to develop certain IPs specifically for them. However, the consumer should buy a PS3 because of that game, not because Sony is printed on the console.

In my opinion, brand loyalty among consumers is dumb. Consoles are expensive, and to spend that much money just to have a "Nintendo," or "Microsoft," or "Sony" is...well...stupid.

not fact based at all. The 360 is also in the 3DO arena if you're strictly stating the price. The only reason the 3DO didn't work out wasn't it's price but it's library. It sold well initially but picked up no steam once it was obvious no one was making games for it. I'm sure you're old enough to know that right?

And what person who actually knows what they're talking about would compare Sony and 3DO? Sony has the strongest 1st and 2nd party developers ever in existence. Nintendo used to have that title but fewer and fewer 1st party titles have come out for the N64 and Cube along with very poor 2nd party and 3rd party support puts them a distant 2nd place.

Get a clue guy! The only people skeptical of the PS3 are 360 owners on forums trying to sway people who don't own one from buying one.

Rethink your strategy dude, your execution sucks.

Falling back on 'The Name' doesn't cut it. That is what Sony is doing instead of making it clear to gamers WHY they need a PS3, WHY it's worth the investment and WHAT they have to look forward to.

If they actually did this instead of doing the retarded 'This is Living' and 'Creepy Doll' P.R., more people would have faith in the company.

The only reason 360 has a larger library is because it has been out for a year. Wait one year and see how many games ps3 has out compared to how many the 360 had out after 1 year.

A lot of what he said was plain dumb (no ***** the 360 has a larger library, it's been out four times longer), but he's on the money about the brand thing. In reality, the PlayStation console isn't much better than the 360, both technologically and generally, people just see PlayStation and say "Oh it must be better"

Don't get me wrong the PS3 looks like an awesome console and I will get one as soon as it has more games (provided those don't come to 360 too), but ignorant fools make it out like the PS3 and the tech inside it is the be-all end-all of consoles. It's pretty far from that
