Neil Thompson says there's still no market for Blu-ray movies |
Ó
Neil Thompson, UK Microsoft Xbox boss, refuses to acknowledge hints that the Playstation 3's built-in Blu-ray drive gives the machine tactical advantage over the Xbox 360. Whilst the PS3 is a big, heavy truck requiring a big, heavy engine, the Xbox remains a much more nimble box that uses its architecture in a much more nimble way, according to him.
Possibly igniting fanboy spats everywhere, Thompson wonders of the PS3,
Do I want to make people pay £ 200 extra for a machine with discs that have storage space I don’t need? My answer’s no, I don’t need to do that today. And I don’t think I’m going to need to do that for quite a while.
Thompson says that the nimble Xbox 360 could adapt to anything that the PS3 has in its arsenal. He says that he's not sure that the market has evolved to high definition movies yet, a reference to the PS3's Blu-ray drive. But when market finally adapts to high-definition movies, the Xbox 360 has means to go with whichever way the market wants.
The PS3's Blu-ray drive has been cited as one of the reasons for the system's heavy price tag. The Xbox 360 is less expensive than the PS3, but could not play next-gen movies. Then again, Thompson says that the Xbox 360 has been developed to deliver HD gaming - not to drive really complicated engines to get Blu-ray players into the market.

Comments [refresh]
This is clear that this guy is getting uncomfortable... PS3 will smash the 360 !!! Look at the UK sales, just impressive !!! Now wait for this market to get BR movies, that will finish the HD DVD !!!
Time to sell my 360 and cherish my PS3 !!!
A MS employee bashing something Sony? OMG I never would of guessed! Also, the Cell processor steps up the price as much as blu-ray. Lastly, considering PS3 games are using upwards of 20gb worth of disc space at and around launch, it's impossible to immagine games 2 years from now and not having blu-ray to provide space.
Sounds like a typical comment of the competition. Of course he would dispel the needs of Blu-ray. Whatever, his comments are of no matter. We know how sweet Bluray video performs, and when there are games take up 3 dvds for a quality game to PS3's 1 disc that covers the game and extras, his comments will still be the same and still hold no worth. I bet he would have you believe we are winning the war in Iraq and global warming is just a natural earth cycle as well. Thompson you are a fountain of misinformation. You're Fired.
blah blab blah. Sore losers. M$ just cant shut up can they. They know their gonna loose but instead of doing it with a little dignity, they go and bash and talk trash about the competition. I guess its human nature but very immature nonetheless. Future proof is the word you need to learn you d1ckwad. When Blu-Ray wins, which we all know it will. I wont have to go and buy an add on because its already integrated.
Did he say something that can be considered bashing?
He's totally right. Only 1 percent of movie players sold are HD-DVD or blu ray. MS doesn't want to really get involved in a HD movie format war and that's why there's the optional add on. XBOX 360 is flexible, the PS3 is not.
No current gen games need more than 9 GB of space. Just because PS3 games have the space, they duplicate the data to make up for the slower blu ray speed, and use uncompressed HD audio and video movies in games instead of rendering it real time like the XBOX 360. Blu ray games also undoubtedly have "filler" like many PS1 games did. Funny how a tetris PS1 game can use over 300 mb of data....
Sony admitted they didn't like how DVD players and movies got cheap too fast. That's why they want you to "upgrade" to blu ray now. $ony wants you to spend $600+ on a blu ray player and $30+ for movies again. That's the reason for blu ray's existance.
"The Xbox 360 has been developed to deliver HD gaming - not to drive really complicated engines to get Blu-ray players into the market."
Do people want to buy into a marketing gimmick to push another unwanted sony media format? Yes nearly everyone who likes movies do not give a s*it about blu ray or HD-DVD yet.
$5 upscaled DVDs are better than a $30 movie that looks slightly better any day to me.
Microsoft is not a big HD-DVD backer! They will support the winning format either way.
Was there any trash talking there? That's sony's strategy.
How the hell can MS lose? Last time I checked they had about 10 million MORE sales than the PS3. When the launch rush in Europe ends the PS3 sales will be back to the usual pathetic levels like in the US. Did you see the sales numbers in North America? 100,000 more XBOX 360s sold than PS3 per week! The fact you think that's losing shows how dillusional you are.
You sound scared to me.....
Wow you are really sad....All YOU do is come to QJ to talk $h!t about Sony products.
They have more sales because of a 1 year lead but if you really want to look at numbers the 360 has slowed to a crawl in weekly sales and the PS3 is doing better than the 360 when it came out so that is an indication of where things will be very soon.
"They know their gonna loose..."
HAHAHAHAHAHA xD x)
Yea they will x). So would you like to hear this message of an Sony dev:
"A number of Taiwanese game developers/operators have indicated that the PS3 will be unable to surpass the Xbox 360 in terms of global sales until 2008".
And this message was even from a Sony dev, so I bet it would even take until mid 2008 or end of 2008.
I can see you crying at home because you bought a Ps3
Have a nice day Sony retards
If MS isn't in the HD race, then why announce the HD generation with release of the 360? If MS isn't in the HD race, then why sell the HD DVD addon? If Sony isn't doing anything special, then why did he say that the 360 could adapt to anything the ps3 is doing? ALL this adds up to what most people with real common sense have known all along, the PS3 is a better buy and is starting to prove its worth and is a more future proof system than the 360.
Over the next 10 years, who do you think will have to adapt?
Of course HE'S going to put down blue-ray. Microsoft is FOR HD-DVD. Of course he's going to put down others to help his company, that's kind of his job. I have high hopes for the PS3, but that doesn't mean I'm a fanboy (until someone really starts bashing other consoles around).
What makes you so sure that Sony's sales are going to slow down in Europe when as it stands they are braking records. If anything sales are about to take a major leap now that Killzone has been given a release date, not to mention that Heavenly Sword and Lair are around the corner. Oh and take a look at sales in Japan so you can see what pathetic sales really look like.
No the XBOX 360 continues to outsell the PS3 by a wide margin. The only exceptions are Japan and the recent European and Austrailan launch rushes. When that is over in about 3 weeks, the 360 will most likely take over again. Japan is the only region the PS3 will not finish last.
The 360's one year lead is sony's fault for including blu ray, and a major reason why it isn't selling so hot now.
The 360 had a worldwide launch and supplies were severely limited for 5 months! Just because sony has plenty of unsold PS3s stockpiled doesn't mean there's more demand for it. Of course that won't stop sony from making a huge deal about it.
Honestly Msoft are a bit weaksauce when it comes to these crucial hardware / software decisions.
When Sony announced 1080p, Msoft announced it would be unecaccary to 2010 (or 11), and then quickly followed up with a 1080i update, months later.
Then came the proposed HD DVD player, after Sony announved the Blu Ray Drive.
Oh and 20gb was supposed to be 'more than enough' space.... Er yea... 120gb black Xbox anyone?
No in these aspects Msoft seem to be 'tagging along'.
Oh and the 360 being 'nimble' and 'adaptable' is marketing BS. All that means is the 360 can get PREPHRIALS ala. HD DVD drive, bigger 360 hard drives, USB wireless adapter ect.
All this is at a HEFTY PRICE though.............
High def movies arent a big market - but with large LCDs and Plasmas prices rapidly dropping, more people are going to have high res TV's over the next 2 years, and by then the market for HD movies will have dramatically expanded.
Man, consoles just WANT to be PC's dont they...........
Mr. Common Sense says...
"Microsoft is not a big HD-DVD backer!"
Sorry, but this is completely incorrect. MS IS a big HD DVD, and one the HD DVD group mentions over and over again. I went to an HD DVD media event last year where they introduced their big HD DVD truck, and there was a rep from MS there talking up HD DVD as a format, and how the company was going to support it. You may want to take a look at http://www.thelookandsoundofperfect.com/ (the HD DVD website) and see how many times MS is mentioned there. The fact that MS is now distancing itself from the format should tell you something...
Gord
Just to correct your little statement about how blu-ray is slower... not entirely true. The minimum speed of a 12x DVD drive is.... 5x. This means a data transfer rate of 6.875 MBps at minimum to a maximum speed of 16.5 MBps. Blu-Ray Transfer speed is constant at 8 MBps. Now this may not seem that much faster to you, but a lot of people have been talking about how 12x DVD reader reads slower than a 2x Blu-Ray for more than half the disc!!!
Msoft ARE backing HD DVD, with Toshiba - these two companies have a strong partnership.
Sony however seems to be trouncing HD DVD after a initially rocky start.
Methinks the PS3 really has decided the 'war', as the blu ray player is part of the 'package'. More or less it is forced upon you, when you buy the console - I mean once you get it, you probably will never buy HD DVDs.
With the 360 addon - Why would you spend extra on an attachment for an undecided format, simply for movies? Thus it isnt forced on you...
Have you realised that the 360 is BONED by the end of the year according to this 'Taiwanese' thing.
So technically the 360 will lose to the PS3 in the console wars...........
How the hell is that a Msoft victory?
Microsoft is probably about the biggest backer of HD-DVD there is.
MS only offered the HD-DVD add on to appease dumbasses who always say "you can't watch HD movies on it." Only 150,000 people were interested enough to buy it to play HD movies yet. So MS made a smart decision.
If HD-DVD wins, what will the PS3 be good for? Playing 30 crappy ports of better games on other consoles and the PC? Any more decent exclusive games coming up? Let's see how many more become multiplatform....
News Flash! PS3 sales are horrible. Don't bring up the launch in new terrirtory because it's irrelevant in the long run. 3 weeks from now the sales will nosedive like in other regions. 100,000 fewer sales in North America per week! At least in North America most people have common sense.
Sony isn't doing ANYTHING special. Why do people still believe the hype? They can't even make more than one decent exclusive game.
Home+ easy excuse to get people to pay for "free" online with microtransactio ns and advertising everywhere.
Folding @ Home- not sony's idea
Blu ray wow only $30 for a movie out of a selection of 50. Helps sony make more money off movie players again, and the reason behind it's existence.
Linux+ limited resources and functionality. Can't even get a game boy emulator to run on it.
Internet+ browser only slightly better than the PSP's sh*tty browser when most people have a computer that does it much better.
You have no clue what common sense is. It is the opposite of buying everything sony tells you to, and choosing your purchases based on what it offers compared to the competition.
Over the next 10 years sony will have to adapt their strategy and not force consumers to buy into whatever new product or format they're trying to profit from. If only more consumers were SMARTER and not encourage them to do that s*it in the future.
Microsoft kinda cheated Sony in a way by not going next gen on their media format for the XBOX 360. When developers make the same game for the 360 and the PS3, they will probably have to leave out a lot of features that a high capacity disc could have made the benefit of. Think if the game is a long detailed role playing game. I am not talking about current types of role playing games, I mean next gen detailed games that would make use of huge amounts of data. With a high capacity disc like Blu-ray and HD-DVD they could make the games huge without multiple discs thus leaving the experience more seamless. Now that Microsoft chose the DVD format, most multi platform games will have to either fit on a single disc or be multipul disc (for DVD) thus altering the gaming experience. Just like games such as Final Fantasy on PS1 where you have multiple discs, a lot of the same data that was on one disc, was also on the other discs just to get you to use everything. The problem is that the data that was on the first disc is not all on the other discs and when you would have to go back say to a previous area, you would have to switch discs. I am not saying that Final Fantasy games were like that completely because they were meant to be fairly linear. I think that Sony is attempting to offer a better virtual world experience but developers stay on the other side of the fence to play it safe for now and make games that they can make more profit of instead of caring about the die hard fans.
too bad microsoft dont put in enough work to make there consoles less faulty then they do makin insults at sony
"minimum speed of a 12x DVD drive is.... 5x"
Hmmm, I believe it's 6x min for the 12x DVD drive in the 360 (it's 12x dual-layered, probably 16x single-layered), hence the minimum speed is 8.2MBps, and I believe the speed of 2x Blu-ray is 9MBps. So the 12x DVD drive is only slower for about the first 700-800MB of data on the inner tracks, after that, it overtakes Blu-ray in terms of speed.
Hence on average, the 12x DVD drive in the 360 is 1.5 times the speed of Blu-ray 2x. Also, devs usually put the data they want to be read fastest on the outer regions of the disks, and where speed is not an issue, that data is put on the inner regions (this is a common techique to improve DVD performance).
"Microsoft kinda cheated Sony in a way"
How's that? By making a better designed product that is better supported, sells, and makes money?
Sony cheated many more people than that. Let's go down the list:
Blu ray manufacturers: $ony controls the format and licenses out the technology. This lets them make sure they can make the lowest priced players, preventing other companies' players from selling well.
Consumers: Group screwed over the worst (most don't even realize it.) Consumers now have to choose between 2 competing movie formats when Toshiba welcomed sony to support HD-DVD, which was first. Sony's greed and arrogance led to the development of blu gay. No longer can you buy a cheap, well supported game console with large game library from $ony. Now you must dontate $200 more to support blu ray and $ony's profits.
Nintendo: Sony had a brief partnership with Nintendo in the early 90s to develop a SNES CD drive system to compete with Sega CD. Sony used that technology co-developed with Nintendo to make the Playstation and compete with them!
Lik Sang: completely sued out of business for selling $ony's own Japanese PSPs! Then lied about NOT being responsible and that Lik Sang didn't show up in court, when they paid millions on a defense!
Toshiba: $ony has used every barely legal trick in the bag to inflate sales numbers, trick gamers into buying players, trick gamers into thinking it's necessary with a game console, and starting an organization to spread pro blu ray lies. The forums on blu ray.com is a joke. All the comments with truthful arguments against blu gay are filtered out!
How many times must I say this, BLU RAY DOES NOT MAKE GAMES BETTER IN ANY WAY.
The best reason sony could come up with to use that extra space is to put different versions from other regions on a disc. Yes! Now I can play games in a language I don't understand! What a great advantage!
RPGs like final fantasy never required changing a disc more often than every 10 hours of playing! Totally irrelevant argument.
I HATE COMPANIES THAT TREAT CONSUMERS LIKE THEY'RE MORONS. True, many are, and the forums here sure have lots of them, but I hope people develop some common sense and support companies that use ethical business practices.
If you want to say anything about MS being unethical, how about some examples this time?
Seriously he is a puppet on Bill Gates string.. Keep talking but relize we dont care.
Going to buy a blu ray today just to prove this guy wrong, been wanting rocky anyhow :)
Neil Thompson is an idiot. He needs to worry more about his own dorrstep than the competition. I loove the fact that the PS3 has everything I want in one box.
I am however, peaved with Microsoft for coming up with an Xbox 360 mark 2 that incorporates a HDMI socket!!! Great, so I now have to sell my current 360 to get the new version (if it ever comes to the UK). No thanks MS!
There isn't any demand for BD right now?! LOL. Sony just created the demans... remember, PS3 uses BD for its games; which also allows for higher capacity than DVDs.
With games taking up huge amount of space (more games coming out on multiple DVDs), Sony made the right decision. With games, come movies, they are hand in hand. :)
I agree with one of the guys above. He shouldn't really be saying stuff like that about other consoles, it just makes him look scared. Whether or not he is. Also, it doesn't really matter what Sony did before, he still shouldnt do it.
Also, the comment 'And I don’t think I’m going to need to do that for quite a while.' What's quite a while? like 6 months?
I'm standing by the PS3, and i don't even own one.
How bout all the Windows court fiasco? 360 is not designed better. It is a rushed product that has many flaws. Sony talked about Blu-ray years ago when they talked about the idea to make the use of blue from the light spectrum since it has a narrow bandwidth they could have higher capacity discs. Yeah I know Nintendo had a relationship with Sony. They did not like the route Nintendo wanted to go with the machine so they decided to make their own. One of the best things about Blu-ray is that you have higher capacity discs. There is no denying that. It will be needed sometime. Just look at games from cartridge to cd. Then from cd to dvd. Some games used to be 8megs more or less. Then games went to hundreds of megs. Now they are in the thousands of megs. Next they may need hundreds of thousands of megs.
guess he hasnt seen this article
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid+07/03/27/161243
if my memory serves me right. microsoft are among the early supporters of Blu Ray. i have read it either in the internet or the news paper. but after a few months they launched their XBOX 360 and switched side to HD DVD.
this shows that they rush their XBOX system and won't have enough time to implement and include the Blu Ray format hahaha. because they know in their heart that it will be hard for them to compete against SONY without releasing their XBOX 360 early.
You do sound retarded sir. You must be a child or something do to your lack of intelligence. Maybe mommy will buy you a PS3 when your good. In the meantime have fun with you last gen xy'lonite 180.
lol no demand for hi-def huh? is that why m$ is putting hdmi in their new box? the thought no one would care but look at what sony did! people do care *****face! ***** you m$ xbox 3*****ty fails!
At E3 2005 Microsoft wouldn't shut up about how they were gonna take over the living room and how they were ushering in the HD era. Well right now the PS3 is much more well suited to take over the living room. The 360 is only good for gaming, which isn't a bad thing for a console, had they not talked so much sh1t about the HD era as they put it.You can't even upload any content to your 360 that you haven't bought from MS. All you can do is stream content from your PC. If you want videos on your 360 you have to buy them from MS, if you want photos on your 360 your pretty much sh1t out of luck and if you want music on your 360 you have to rip from a CD. You can forget about transferring your MP3 files and to top it all off you have no HD disc reader. So the way I see it they're not really taking over anything at this time but your wallets, if you want content for your machine you have to pay, not to mention your XBOX live annual fee. So don't come talking sh1t about Sony's micro transaction which are voluntary and not necessary, when Microsoft wont even let you play multiplayer online with out paying an annual fee. I know because I have both and I prefer my PS3 over the 360. Hell the 360 isn't even a decent DVD player, they failed that with fliying colors.
Check it out for yourself

And as usual Mr. No Common Sense still does not answer the question that has been asked many times.
Are you a MS paid employee?
Since you REALLY spend WAY too much time here denouncing ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that is Sony. I alone have asked that question at least 4 times already with not a single answer....make you think what his "true" motives are huh.
Nice post Manny.
Wasn't Microsoft the same company who scoffed at and claimed no need for full 1080p output in game systems? Now... if I'm not mistaken, MS is doing everything they can to try and support 1080p... even though nobody needs it.
I'm probably gonna get flamed for this, but, has any body considered the fact that blu-ray movies might only be selling well because a slew of people who just all bought PS3s have nothing better to do with them? I mean, there isn't really much worth playing on the PS3, and if I had been one of the few who'd ponied up a ton of money for a glorified movie machine, I'd want to make the best of it too. I'd be curious to see how blu-ray sales will be once PS3 has some titles worth playing. I'm willing to bet the sales will drop off as people find other things to do with their systems.
I love the xbox! But if you do the research blu-ray beats hd-dvd in every way except manufacturing cost. Blu-Ray's real enemy is high def on demand video.
This dude knows that BD will win the High Def format. He's preparing all the Xbox 360 owners to expect a little piece of Sony in their lives. Ha Ha. The beginning of the end for microsoft?
Why would you need to get the new model? It adds HDMI and cooler running chips. The 120 GB hard drive can be added to older models.
I can tell you're a PS3 fan by your stupidity.
It is a 2.5 times difference, not 2x HM. Hence the inner tracks read at 12/2.5 which is 5x.
But you're correct in principle on the amount of data read before the 12x DVD takes over for speed.
I won't go into all the maths here, but it works out to be about 1.3GB before the 360 overtakes Blu-ray for speed.
Hence like you said, devs can (and do) put data they would like to be read the fastest onto the outer tracks, giving 360 games transfer speed gains of up to 1.8 times Blu-ray's performance in the PS3.
PS3 has no decent games besides Resistence, the launch game, that has a much better XBOX 360 counterpart. What to do with the PS3 for now? Besides spending hours on forums trying to save it from all the bad press and reviews, you might as well buy the blu ray movies $ony wants you to for only 5 times the cost of a DVD.
"giving 360 games transfer speed gains of up to 1.8 times"
That's just for the outer tracks, not on average. The average is about 1.3 times for reading a full DVD, but if the data is arranged as suggested, it can be much higher for gaming purposes.
dude......common sense hasnt even answered my question on how Sony, Samsung, Disney, Fox, and all bluray supporters are evil while HD-DVD supports are not.
"Notice how all the evil companies support Bluray" - Mister Common Sense.
So if....I mean WHEN MS supports a bluray drive, bluray supporters will turn good and the bluray manufacturer will be the evil one....right?
I somewhat doubt this is the beginning of the end for the Xbox 360. Disregarding the whole issue of movie playback, the 360 is and will remain the more powerful of the 2 platforms until developers get around to taking full advantage of the Cell processors, and that's a few years off from now. Microsoft has a strong enough foothold right now that they aren't going any where. Most likely, Sony will some day overtake MS, but it is some time down the line, and when all is said and done at the end of this generation, Sony most likely will have won, but not by anywhere near as large a margin as last time.
Mr. Common Sense says...
"choosing your purchases based on what it offers compared to the competition"
So, if you have a home video format that has ONE exclusive studio supporting it, and another format that has FIVE exclusive studios supporting it...what does common sense tell you there as to which format will win?
If you're trying to talk about "common sense" then you have to look at all the points you're trying to make and ensure they don't conflict with each other.
I don't own a 360, and probably never will. The fact that it exists doesn't bother me at all. I own a PS3, and I'm entertained every time I turn it on - that's enough for me. If Mr. Common Sense feels threatened by the PS3 then I'd suggest he goes to see a shrink to help him work out his problems; they won't be solved by us on a forum like this.
Gord
That article is the stupidest, least scientific way to test picture quality.
So they compared the XBOX 360's DVD player to an $800 dedicated DVD player only an idiot would buy. They didn't even allow the 360 to upscale the output with it's VGA connection (which the PS3 will never be able to do.) They didn't bother comparing it to the PS3 or the $100 player they said was better (not specified or tested) either? Hmmm I smell BS.
I can transfer any file I want to either my memory card or hard drive on the XBOX 360 using my transfer kit. If you say I can't, then you're a f*cking liar, I transfered all my mp3s to the hard disk last night. I can also plug in any memory card I want using a card reader and view and video, photo, or mp3. I want on it. The XBOX 360 has badass interactive HD visualizations for music playback too.
What's your PS3 doing in the living room? It belongs in the box ready for return or re-sale for a substantial loss. There's better and more useful things to take up that shelf space than a massive fragile dust magnet.
The 360 does nothing new besides high def games. The original XBOX does almost everything the same. Gaming, dvd movie playback (after purchasing a costly remote ), music and XBOX Live. That sucks to be forced so early into buying something new do to no more original XBOX support.
On twisting the facts Muscrat.
Like so many gamers (on all sides btw) you choose to alter the past in order to make your arguement, often using comments that came from other fanboys.
...thats all the name of the game. Blu-ray movies will slow some do to more games because after all that is most of the reason people bought the PS3 for is the cool games coming out. But I do think that it will soon pick up again once more people go high def. Just wait a couple years when more people will have HD tvs do to the fact that here in the U.S. people will have to go digital for any over the air broadcasting and their analog television receivers will no longer work for them because of the new standard. People then will possibly purchase more HD tvs when they go out and get a newer set with the digital support that they are looking for. I know I will.
This really is not the place for such common sense arguements.
Look at the fanboys dominating this thread. Use them as your inspiration. Learn from them. Allow your IQ to drop and you'll fit in perfectly. ;)
Yes you can add the larger hard drive for half the price of the entire console. $200 us dollars. Great deal huh? How will you transfer your game saves? I can tell your an xbox fanboy by your stupidity.
"Most likely, Sony will some day overtake MS, but it is some time down the line,"
You mean ps3 will overtake the 360 right? With the psp and ps2 alone Sony is dominating Microsoft as far as gaming machines go so your statement is very much ass backwards. Count in the Ps3 wich will eventually out sell the 360 and that gap will widen even more.
Get out of here you- you- smart person! This is only for retarded PS3 fans to quarrel with those trying to talk sense into them.
the problem is that their are a whole bunch of kids on forums that don't talk with sense they just talk about what they heard the don't think about what they read just like I did when I was younger, my take on the whole xbox, playstation thing, xbox will either beat playstation by a landslide or playstation and xbox will end up selling about the same amount, My choice is xbox because microsoft is a software company and software has always been the thing that drives hardware and microsoft is the best in the world at software period it is their company DNA, sonys DNA is hardware.
this interview happened before ps3 launched in the uk.
Nice, pointless post Muscrat. Play your PS3 and STFU. Oh wait... No games... Well buy a blu ray movie and play it then....
Who is this Mr. Common Sense character?
I find his posts too truthful to ignore, yet it makes me so mad every time he shows up. It didn't always be this way. I could make up some crap about how PS3 will win and blu ray was awsome and necessary, and coupled with sony's lies, everyone would belive it.
Now this as*hole comes along and ruins it. Go away or I'll cry to sony and my mommy!
PS3 is the best value of any protien folding calculator out there.
Wow! Mr No Common Sense you are a little ***** that has to resort to impersonating me...Just remember I am a REGISTERED user unlike you. You talk about spending hours on forums yet you do it yourself so what does that mean...you sir are a hypocrite and a child.
Now watch you say it wasn't you yada yada yada but yet I am sure an admin here can confirm it is you via IP. But whatever, it just goes to further support the type of person you are and the mentality you have.
But I will say this I do buy Blu Rays and do enjoy them very much. That IS one of the reasons I bought a PS3, to enjoy my HDTV in full TRUE HD 1080p as well have a great gaming console AND for my videos that I can put on it unlike my 360.
Ever notice its always the same groups of people fighting on this blog? Fighting on the internet is like playing in the special olympics, whoever wins is still retarded.
"Nintendo: Sony had a brief partnership with Nintendo in the early 90s to develop a SNES CD drive system to compete with Sega CD. Sony used that technology co-developed with Nintendo to make the Playstation and compete with them!"
I'm not sure but Nintendo withdrew on this project. So its actually not sony's fault.
Nintendo shouldn't have withdrawn >_>
global warming is a natural earth cycle, how would you explain ice ages ? ;)
its just that we exalerated it a bit in the past couple of years. But this was going to happen anyway. We 'recently' had an iceage, wich is always followed by a period of warmth. Wich we are entering now. just a tad bit faster.
The suns activity is changing all the time. Sometimes there are periods when the flares emitting from it is more toward us than other times. This along with the time of year and the weather current as well as the activity that we do to the atmosphere all play a part. We are lucky to get away with what we have for as long as we have. One of these days, Earth will turn into and environment sorta like Hell. I just hope we all die piecefully before that time.
It's not twisted facts he is stating. It is happening before our very eyes my friend.
I don't get what he's doing here.. it's certainly far from "common sense".
Common sense for you would be to find a hobby and do something with your life, instead of refreshing ps3.qj for 8 hours a day talking 'nonsense'.
I'll take one example
"Nintendo: Sony had a brief partnership with Nintendo in the early 90s to develop a SNES CD drive system to compete with Sega CD. Sony used that technology co-developed with Nintendo to make the Playstation and compete with them!"
You do realise that it was nintendo that wanted to partner sony and later out of the blue announced partnership with Philips when Sony already invested millions..
Now let me ask you this, if you have a school project with your "friend' (let's assume you have one).
..No nevermind ***** it, you were teamed up against your wishes with eachother, and you work on it for weeks.
Now you're pretty close to showing your teacher and he suddenly announces in the class that he's working with someone else without you knowing it.
Now would you quit and forget about weeks of work or would you continue and finish it yourself and eventually even surpassing theirs?

I've seen an xbox 360 memory card/hard drive reader on ebay for $20, about the same price as the PS2 memory card reader for the PS3. The cool thing about it is you can take off the hard drive easily and plug it right into the reader.
I have both PS3 and 360. I would never call 360 a more 'nimble' system. Clunky, sure. Obnoxiously loud fan and overstrained hardware, yes. Nimble, no. Nimble implies lightening-fast power and versatility. This is the very heart of what PS3 actually is.
On the other lame-o point raised in the posts above, Edge magazine has just released in the last few months a collection of reprints from 1993. They have a clear description of the Sony-Nintendo deal. It was Nintendo that stiffed Sony, which led to Sony coming back with a vengeance with Playstation.
Also, if my memory serves (and back issues of mags like Sound + Vision and The Perfect Image I believe can prove this), BluRay was the first HD disc concept, long before Sony purchased the design and chose it to spearhead its HD-plans. This first surfaced around 1992. The RESPONSE to BluRay was a hack of the DVD format allowing additional layers and much smaller room for data. This eventually became HD-DVD. I remember thinking back then, "I hope that BluRay wins, because its clearly the better format". Having experienced the superiority of Laserdisc, but seeing it overshadowed at the time by VHS, --I wasn't holding my breath.
Lastly, it is ridiculous to say that Sony was the one who was the spoiler in the HD-summit. Toshiba has a grand total of ONE major movie studio, Universal, supporting it. ONE. The definition of 'spoiler'.
I agree that Sony's move to sue Lik Sang out of business for selling cross-territory was extreme and not their best moment. But the other issues raised above by Mister Common Sense are pure hogwash.
I think Mister Common Sense likes messing with peoples' heads. Look how many of you jump all over him every time he posts something. Sure he's biased, but it doesn't seem like he makes stuff up. I think the conflict between you is halarious.

the space is needed for nex gen gaming. Gears of war was a dvd 9 and it was very short. BLu-ray to me is more for gaming, and second and hd movie player. all the xbox trolls will go wild if they heard Ms was going to use Hd-dvd for gaming
if you can't see the facts in front of you.
I'm sure Mister Common Sense would be on the bandwagon then.
You say look at the UK sales but we all know that the PS3 was delayed for so long so it had more to sell at launch and stock was not sold out whereas the 360 was.
Now look at all the other countrys the PS3 were launched also and then read FLOP UNSOLD STOCKS. I believe something like 5% of supplied stock sold in countrys like France.
Blu RAY and HD_DVD are flops in the high street stores no one buys them and Blu ray sells the least Dedicated HD players.
And what is the householders choice of format OH yes its called DVD9(isnt that also built into the 360?).
As A Wii owner I must say for people who think that the PS3 is doing so well you sure do sound like you are trying to talk everyone else into believing it to.
Facts are in February and March the 360 in the USA OUTSOLD the PS3 in the USA and Japan COMBINED so this is looking like once the PS3 launch sales are over it will proberly follow in the USAs footsteps.
After all like the 360 the PS3s best sales in Europe are coming from the UK and doing far less well elsewhere and like the 360 its best sales overall are coming from the USA so lets wait for the launch honeymoon (the time all systems sell big) to be over and settle down to normal sales in a couple of weeks. I predict the 360 will easily be the overall winner of these Two consoles but overall for the next couple of years the Will will be the top selling system...
Heres a fact 99.9% of householders dont give a ***** about HD players.
There are tons of people out there that still haven't purchased a PS3 who own a PS2 that will buy one when the price goes down, there is more content, or when the PS2 is no longer supported. The same thing happened to XBOX.
Not going to happen until the next XBOX. And I am perfectly happy with 9Gb games, since the really good ones so far still have 2-4 gigs left over.
I wonder how much space Oblivion takes up on the PS3's disc. The 360's version only uses like 5gb, the PS3 probably needs 20gb for the exact same game.
You think that's me?
I just state the facts (just under my own name,) and some people can't handle it.
You give new meaning to the word consumer. You consume everything from your favorite company. I only consume what I actually need or want.
I was a happy PS2 and PSP owner (I have 2 of each!) and look how much I like the PS3.....
I'm not alone.
Yeah NOW that you registered AFTER I pointed it out that you weren't. Look it is 100% obvious you are ONLY here to discredit ANYTHING Sony which is amazing since why would 1 person do so much and go out of their way to talk about something they dislike. Makes people wonder? And you STILL haven't answered the question by people here and myself.
Are you a paid MS employee? Funny how it has been asked at least 20 times now and you haven't answered; not even once. At this point even if you answer "no" nobody would believe you since your track record of posting bs lies is right here in black and white to confirm.
You state facts...yeah sure and the Zune is a great seller (sarcasm). You consistently spew YOUR own views and #'s that have NO basis about a console you don't even own! How could you be un-biased if you don't even own one to compare? Are yo man enough to admit that? Probably not.
Seriously this is way too easy, your own words show what you are really about and it just helps to prove your "so called" agenda (so you think). At least I can show I have some REPUTABLE credentials online with quite some years of help and service to the public.
Go to Afterdawn.com and go to the console section. I helped grow that whole section and today it has over 750,000 posts in all. I have been in the scene for MANY years and given back by Tutorials, Answers, Direction and more. What have you done? Besides come to QJ and speak negatively, hell the ONLY thing I really ever said bad about the 360 is that they have a PROVEN record of hardware failure issues. NOT that the 360 sucks graphically (since it doesn't), NOT that 360 OR PS3 is going to win, NOT that 360 games are really bad or anything truly negative about the 360....and you know why? I am a true gamer and a true gamers will play ANYTHING on ANY system and give credit where credit is due. Unlike you and your one sided closed mind.
Need I say more? Should I go on and break it down some more as to your TOTAL inappropriate, biased, self-centered, "MS is the best" clouded judgements? Say whatever you will but I am sure MANY people will read this and do some research as to what you have said and they can see it for themselves.
The only thing you have done here is show YOU truly are just a Fanboy. The pure 100% definition of one. You are not a gamer and you are not fooling anyone. Later.
not only does blu-ray hold more data on one disc, but 4x blu-ray is faster read and write than dvd. now when 12x blu-ray comes out... the speed!!
And blu-ray is better protected
