Naughty Dog to PS3: How do I love thee (and not Xbox 360)? Let me count the ways

Naughty Dog <3 PS3 - Image 1Drake and his fellow adventurers were meant for the PS3, and only the PS3. Naughty Dog co-president Christophe Balestra, they couldn't have done it on the Xbox 360. "It would be impossible. I'm 100 percent sure of this."

Reasons why it's simply impossible to have it on the Xbox 360:
  1. First of all, we fill the Blu-ray 100 percent, we have no room left on this one. We have 256GB of data; we're using every single bit of it.
  2. It's the combination of Blu-ray and hard drive. You can play the entire game without loading. We don't require an install. We're doing all the post-processing effects on the SPUs (Synergistic Processing Units). The quality of depth of field we have, you can't do that on the Xbox.
  3. We've invested a lot of time maximizing the power of the machine. That's our job, to make the PS3 shine.
Oh, and that Naughty Dog is owned by Sony, of course.

All in all, their goal with making the Uncharted 2 on the PS3 is to "make the PS3 shine." In closing, he said,

Sometimes people ask us about what is the one thing [we improved] on Uncharted 2, and it's hard to answer. We're trying to increase the quality of the game, so we're design-driven. No matter what it takes, we'll find a way to figure it out, to squeeze what we need to squeeze out of [the system] to make it happen.

whaat?

good games not for 360??? this is news
by Azrael_666 - 2009-09-02 01:13:31
256gb?

QJ don't you mean 25 gb? a blu-ray disc doesn't hold 256 gb of data.
by JOshISPoser - 2009-09-02 01:45:31
of course

but then again, you don't hear it from the opposition for the 360, even with companies owned by Microsoft.
by Musev - 2009-09-02 02:19:40
..

hmmm then again what name do you call people that would openly defend something thats broken with lies? ...other than politician
by MaeseDude - 2009-09-02 02:50:18
Raw data that gets compressed...

I think what he meant was that they have 256gb of raw, original data. Which is then packed to the 25gb of the Blu-Ray. Just to prevent some opposing fanboy claiming that the same could have been packed on a DVD9, using some fantastic compression. He probably wanted to point out that the data is already compressed as much as possible, and still the Blu-Ray is filled up completely.

Propoganda for $200, Alex.

What is "Naughty Dog not biting the hand that feeds them"?
by GUNBEHINDTHESUN - 2009-09-02 03:31:57
Just a typo

The article link says 25GB of data. It would be even better if they went full force and used 50GB of data. Regardless, 25GB is huge and we know with that much it is going to be a killer game!
by saldude2 - 2009-09-02 04:45:37
..

all they've said is that ps3 has blue ray. they are no better than fanboys
by HIDEO KOJIMA - 2009-09-02 05:12:17
@ GUNBEHINDTHESUN

Games are not determined to be great by how much space they take.
by f31j - 2009-09-02 05:51:11
..

not exactly. fan boys say ps3 have blu-ray as a next-gen media playing device. Naughty dog is saying they can use uncompressed audio and video files like Hideo Kojima did for MGS4. But I'm sure it can be done on 360 if they use 4-5 disks like for FF XIII.
by ikari7789 - 2009-09-02 05:59:29
That is a typo, but...

Blu-Ray can hold 256gb of data, they just haven't released any yet. I think they've managed to cram 20 layers onto one before.
by f31j - 2009-09-02 06:01:33
...

can't beat Gabe Newell...
by Link75e - 2009-09-02 06:16:57
Nobdy fighting about systems nice

usualy you have fanboys here duking it out but this is nice. I hope they fixed the camera problems the first one had and i hope its longer i finshed the first game like in 5 hours but real fun game. The whole blu ray thing i dont care only on movies but i still play kingdom hearts on ps2 and thats on a dvd and i would play that over any of my ps3 games any day except when god of war comes out.
by ValiX - 2009-09-02 06:17:12
Either its a typo...

Or thats a crap load of compression they will be using :P
by hush404 - 2009-09-02 08:43:28
...

OH. I so thought ND was always like insomniac... not owned by Sony but rather an independent who had a strong relationship.
by SolBoricua - 2009-09-02 09:12:55
simply

it just looks kick ass!!
by NarooN - 2009-09-02 10:33:05
.

See, the thing these PS3/360 Hammer Legion fanboys don't understand is that Naughty Dog makes nothing but *good* games. Whether or not you like them, they're always of the highest quality. And yeah, I'm pretty sure they compressed the hell out of it. If they didn't, they would need a dual-layered BD.
by TheCopyNinja - 2009-09-02 11:26:26
We need more devs like Naughty Dog.

They don't just dish a new game every year or few months. They actually take their time to make great quality games. I'll most likely get Uncharted 2, looks great, especially online.
by SuperQuest - 2009-09-02 12:41:58
ugh

No sony don't own naughty dogs. Does M$ own Valve ... no .... so same situation here with naughty dog and sony
by Csyrah - 2009-09-02 14:49:52
@HIDEO KOJIMA

Its not one of the main things no, but it is a big factor for content and graphics. An example would be the amount of popup that some 360 titles have. Uncompressed data is processed faster then compressed. With DVD9, practically everything is compressed.
by Csyrah - 2009-09-02 14:52:20
...

The thing is, why would they want to? they can design a game to the DVD9 standard, which means less work so they save alot of money, then still make alot off the release.
by your_fire - 2009-09-02 17:05:13
hehe

its time for the PS3 to SHINE!!!!..even though it has matte finish now lol
by Stealth! - 2009-09-02 17:39:45
You guys

Do realize that the game is filling up 50GBs of space, meaning dual layered BD right? This was confirmed awhile back. What the QJ probably meant by 256GB was actually the 256MB of ram most likely. But yea, ND confirmed they filing up the entire 50GB disc, with no installs. BEAT THAT METAL GEAR SOLID 4!!
by Shatterdome - 2009-09-02 18:10:15
...

Josh....I was thinking exactly the same thing. You never hear any devs, even 1st party ones say "Only 360 can do this". Superquest....Sony does own Naughty Dog, just like MS owns Lionhead and used to own Bungie (pretty much still does)....
by Shatterdome - 2009-09-02 18:11:36
No...

QJ f'd up....if you read the source article, it's 25 GB
by Shatterdome - 2009-09-02 18:18:37
yeah

By default I lose respect for any developer that puts out another game around a year or so after they released their last iteration. It really shows that not much work is being put into improving the technology, they are just putting a new face on the game, with new situations/stories *coughCODcough* This is usually why I stick to first party titles. They are a long time in the making, the devs are not rushed (usually) and sequels get 2 years not 1. Not to mention they do not need to make compromises because of multiple platforms....
by BiigBiscuit - 2009-09-02 19:25:02
...

Its a typo, its 25GBs of space meaning its not a dual layered BD (50GBs)
by spitfyre1985 - 2009-09-02 20:50:07
Great Game

The original Uncharted was a great game and in my opinion still probably the best PS3 exclusive title out there besides maybe MGS4. Out of all the games in Sony's killer lineup in the near future this one is the one I am most excited for. Naughty Dog does know their way around the PS3, that's for sure.
by Digitus - 2009-09-03 03:41:26
Hm

Its just more dev talk. If you haven't noticed yet (you'd have to be a blind fanboy not to) developers who tend to work exclusively on a console over a period of time (or with a company) will make public statements to make their company look good. You'll probably be hearing "you can only do this on blank" for a while longer. At least until more people are familiar with the PS3. The PS3 does have more theoretical power but its just a lot of developers aren't familiar with the system and find the 360/PC easier to work with because they already get what line of code gets what done. (like the differences with that game Rage is simply due to lack of familiarity). When more companies start to familiarize themselves with the system it'll simply be a fact that the PS3 has more power. After that we'll repeat the cycle "graphics don't matter, its all about gameplay" and then with Natal "oh thats a gimmick" or "blank is better than blanks motion control" And it goes around and around
by jomacho0 - 2009-09-03 15:30:49
Bull

That's a stupid thing to say that it really needs the 25gb. They could just downsample the textures, compress audio and stop putting 90min of movies on games. PC owns when it comes to performance and still i haven't seen many games exceed the dvd9.
by Dark_Skai - 2009-09-04 10:11:27
@Shatterdome

not trying to be a *****, but you do know that COD is now being developed by 2 differen't companies Treyach and Infinity Ward and each take 2 years to make theirs which in turn enables them to release one each year.
by pnkr0cker - 2009-09-07 14:54:11
Awesome>Bull

jomacho0, you're saying ND should not take advantage of the PS3's full potential, and settle down with where the Xbox 360 is. I must say that's the stupidest thing I've heard. No one bought the PS3 for $600 bucks to get Microsoft's money stealing-quality bull*****.
