A report circulated earlier on the web about a possible mandatory installation required to play the upcoming PS3 exclusive Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, but thanks to Twitter, Naughty Dog quickly put an end to the speculation and officially stated that there will be no mandatory installation for the game.

The news broke when a mandatory installation size of 1.7GB was discovered on the boxart of the game but was later corrected by Naughty Dog as a typo. Now they have released an official statement on their Twitter account dismissing any other reports regarding the games installation and said:

We can confirm there is NO mandatory installation for UNCHARTED2

So there you have it, no worries. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is slated for an October 13 release.

well...

This should have been obvious considering the first game had no installation, and the new game runs the same engine. After it was updated to add trophies, it did have a very small install, like 10mb or so.

So...

This is seen as a good thing? I'd much prefer having a mandatory installation. Installations to the HDD cut down loading times by a huge percent. So what if you have to wait 20 minutes or however long it takes when you first put the game in the system? It beats sitting through load times while actually playing the game! That's what the HDD is there for, and that's why Sony made it so you can install a bigger one.

yeah, but

Uncharted 1 had no install, and had great graphics, incredible sound, and some of the best load times i've ever seen since games were on cartridges.

I wouldn't say.

A mandatory installation would be a good idea. Most of my friends who own a PS3 own small hard -drives, or have filled up theirs with music, movies, etc. Personally I scrapped my 60GB for a 320GB, but many people do not have that luxury. In my mind,an optional install would be the best route, and one all games should follow.

Prefer mandatory? Why? Optional pleases everyone. 1.7gb isn't even that much compared to some games though. It's just a bit tight at the moment on my PS3 as I only got 40gb so I'm constantly uninstalling some games to put new ones on there. Reckon I'll get me a 500gb one from play.com with my birthday money and try to install it. I'm not looking forward to doing that. Got this nasty feeling I'm gonna strip the screws.

Do some of you people have some sort of dev dictionary filled by some 12 year olds best guesses?

Yeah

Those screws are a pain in the ass. I have to use pliers to get them off.

I am on the fence about whether they should do mandatory installs. Obviously they are not needed, Uncharted looked great and Killzone 2 is freaking amazing and has barely any load times. I just keep thinking if they were able to do such an amazing job without the need to install to the HDD, imagine what KZ2 and Uncharted 2 could do if there was a couple gigabyte mandatory install....

Actually

You guys are actually wrong about Uncharted 1 and Killzone 2. Both had installs but you didn't see it. It's not like the regular installs where you have to do it before you play. When each cutscene in the game is being played an invisible install is going on and that's why both Killzone 2 and Uncharted 1 had no VISIBLE install times. You just couldn't see it but it was there. This, however, did limit KZ2 having co-op but both games was incredible. As more people get familiar with the PS3 architecture as some of the SONY's first party devs, they'll be able to have optional installs, optional firmware updates which most are only beneficial to Developers and have on going installs during Cinematics and cutscenes you're not aware of.
