Namco Bandai announces Majin: The Fallen Realm for PS3, Xbox 360 |
I just gotta ask: what is up with Namco Bandai these days? First there was God Eater, which apparently grew out of the Monster Hunter womb. Now they've announced Majin: The Fallen Realm, a co-op adventure starring a young hero and his giant pet. Guess what it bears a resemblance to.
The whole young hero with a giant monster pet has been done before, but the art style is definitely a throwback to The Last Guardian. Even the gameplay feels a bit similar.
In Majin, players control a young thief as he tries to solve puzzles and overcome obstacles with the help of his AI-controlled pet rock monster (the titular Majin). Namco Bandai also promises a bit of stealth gameplay, seeing as how the hero is agile but weak, so he presumably has to sneak around a lot. At the other end of the spectrum, Majin is slow but powerful. This one seems to be a lot more action-oriented than the Team ICO title, though.
Majin: The Fallen Realm is currently being developed by Game Republic for PS3 and Xbox 360. It's slated for an early 2010 release. Here's the announcement trailer:

You make it sound like The Last Guardian has been out for years "Its been done before" or "gameplay feels a bit similar". I agree this game does bear a resemblance to The Last Guardian but you can't really say "its been done before" for all you know the games started development around the same time. It'll be like comparing GTA to other sand box games. Sure you can make the argument if you want but theres really no point especially for these two games. Anyway, it does look interesting, I'll keep an eye on it.
"The whole young hero with a giant monster pet has been done before, but the art style is definitely a throwback to The Last Guardian."
See that "but" there? When I said it's been done before, I meant the whole boy with a giant pet angle. Not just in TLG or games in general.
You're right about the gameplay bit though. Will have to see more of this too. God Eater turned out to have a rather interesting twist. Hopefully this one will as well.
There are only so many combinations of characters that can be done. I'm sure these games won't be the last child/guardian combos, but they probably won't be the best forever, either. I'm also sure there will also be more single player games with 4 character parties that contain a wussy, some chick in a flower dress, a goth chick and a man with huge muscles, also.
Well I had fun playing God of War 1 and 2 even though I had already played Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden. This game looks like good times.
Flame bait much? While it does certainly have that Last Guardian feel, there is one MAJOR part that definitely distinguishes it:
The main character.
I am sorry if you feel like I am insulting the writer, but its pretty obvious. The character in The Last Guardian is supposed to be helpless. That's where the giant Creature comes in;
While in this, the character is definitely a strong character. Someone who can fend for himself.
Plus, the art style is COMPLETELY different. In The Last Guardian, it is EXTREMELY detailed, showcasing all the details in this world, where in this game, its much more "Prince of Persia-ish with its colors. Also, this game seems much more "Open World" then The Last Guardian, where the Last Guardian seems much more like a linear adventure quest.
NOTE: Linear does not mean LOL ITS THE SAME THING, no, its simply stating that its game play features a single path in the game, where this game is more open world.
Your two statements contradict each other:
"The whole young hero with a giant monster pet has been done before, but the art style is definitely a throwback to The Last Guardian. Even the gameplay feels a bit similar."
" This one seems to be a lot more action-oriented than the Team ICO title, though."
So don't say "You obviously didn't read the article, he actually says some "good" things" because I did read it.
To me it seems like the Pet/Monster is somewhat similar to an Earth Golem from Fable II. The game certainly has my interest. Once I see some more gameplay I'll have a better idea of how much I want the game.
See much more of a resemblance there. The earth Golem from fable 2 looks A LOT like this, sans tree face. ;D
But I expect TLG to blow it away.
I have enjoyed "Game Republic"s games but... really have MUCH more faith in Team Ico.
Looks they're trying to feed off the Hype of TLG. Like "Fans of LTG will like our game aswell" sorta thing. Hope this is aint gona be a Prototype VS Infamous war all over again.
Me personally, The Last Guardian FTW.
