MS Engineer on PS3: Horizontal scaling? Unimpressive.

The PS3 SDK that could. - Image 1Earlier this week, Sony released an SDK update which was supposed to fix issues regarding the scaling of 480i PS2 games that run on backwards compatibility mode on the PS3. Later on, there was another SDK update which allowed PS3 games to scale their content, albeit only horizontally.

Though many PS3 owners have welcomed these new developments, there are some who still think that maybe these aren't really as important or as impressive as others may actually think. Among those who remain unimpressed would be Bruce Dawson, a senior software design engineer for Microsoft.

Asked about his thoughts on the PS3's latest scaling solutions, he notes that horizontal scaling is "a poor substitute for a true hardware scaler", and that this is actually a relatively easy thing to do. He also points out that Sony's "new" feature is something that consoles have always been able to handle, and that it all "just sounds like they are adjusting the video output rate". All in all, he basically says that the updates are "nowhere near as good as the Xbox 360's scaler".

Now, we're no engineers, so some of the tech-talk is a bit dizzying for mere mortals like us. However, for those of you who ARE engineers and want to know more of the nitty-gritty details, here's the full version of Dawson's impressions.

I see no sign that the PS3 contains a chip that can do vertical scaling, and this new feature (horizontal scaling) is a poor substitute for a true hardware scaler. It is a step forward for owners of 1080i only HDTVs, once PS3 games support it, but it is nowhere near as good as the Xbox 360Â’s scaler.

This recent announcement is just for horizontal scaling, and horizontal scaling is easy. To do high quality horizontal scaling you just need to buffer up a few pixels and intelligently average between them.

Cheap horizontal scaling is even easier: you just send pixels to the video output a bit slower (or send pixels at the same rate, but read them from memory slower). ItÂ’s the sort of thing that consoles have always been able to do. This new horizontal scaling feature just sounds like they are adjusting the video output rate.

Vertical scaling, on the other hand, is much harder. You need to be able to buffer up (or sample from) two or more lines of data, and then intelligently average between them. For high quality scaling you want to be sampling from a half-dozen lines or more. The Xbox 360 can do this. I donÂ’t know whether the PS3 can do this, but if it could I think we would have seen it by now.

This new feature means that games that have previously only supported 720p can now, sort of, be modified to support 1080. When these games detect a display that canÂ’t support 720p they can switch to using a 960x1080 buffer. This is only 12.5% more pixels than 1280x720 so the increase in fill rate and memory consumption should be manageable. Then they can tell the PS3 to stretch this buffer to 1920x1080 at display time and voila, 1080 support.

Except, it will be pretty weak 1080 support with an odd and substandard result. The horizontal resolution will be worse than with 720p (960 across instead of 1280), and the images will be twice as blurry horizontally as vertically. 960x1080 is going to look worse than 1280x720 (although itÂ’s certainly an improvement over having to drop back to 480i).

And the difference of a hardware scaler aren't that impressive either.

Playing a game in 720p and 1080p on the Xbox360 with a game thats designed for 720p is little difference.

we don't really care because they are speaking from their own console's point of view, not an non-biased :

but it is nowhere near as good as the Xbox 360’s scaler.

» You post this as news?

Let me get this straight.....since a M$ employee says it's so it must be true about Sony's scaler?

That's like asking a Republican if they think the new policy being passed by Democrats is a good one.....of course they'll say no and theirs is better regardless if it's true or not.

This guy is feeding us the M$ company line, he has no idea what internal scaling abilities may be built into any one of the chips in the PS3. Just because there isn't one lil chip explicitly known for scaling, doesn't mean there isn't this functionality built into the cell, rsx, or some other chip that's primary function is something other than scaling.

Is there scaling hardware, yes. Can it be efficiently used by DEVS, well that's the real question.

by MisterAV - 2007-01-31 08:25

Exactly!!!! and if sony do only horizontal scaling there is a good reason.

» quit using my name, it's false advertising when you do it

Did you bother to read the technical explanation? It's not like he's making crap up or saying things he does not know for sure. He is explaining how the XBOX 360's scaler works and is commenting on what he knows about the PS3's. All you say in response is you don't trust him because he works for Microsoft. Can you recall any official announcment from MS that was proven false?

This is why I believe him:

Do you understand the way sony operates? If there was good scaling ability in the PS3, they would make a HUGE deal about it. They would say their scaler is so much better than the XBOX's, Microsoft is doing a disservice by including an inferior scaler, the massive power of the cell can handle any scaling tasks, etc.

No reply from sony? Give it time, but I'm sure they will have nothing to argue.

by Dj Natas - 2007-01-31 09:30
» There is no need for hardware upscaler in the PS3

because it outputs 1080p, so they have to downscale video, the M$ guy somehow forgot to mention that.

If you can get 1080p out of VGA or component, WTF do you need HDMI for? If movie studios choose to use the security protocol for HD-DVD in the future, there will be a cable released.

how can an engineer talk about Sony right now?

Dont they have a lot of work to do trying to FIX the "impressive" Microsoft Vista?

by Extinction - 2007-01-31 10:03
» Actually he's full of s***

He is making things up. The solution he suggests of holding pixels longer, is not what PS3 uses. Since that would not use a second framebuffer, as it's a trick for the output hardware. Also a software solution can not be limited to one axis. Meaning there is a hardware scaler. And other PS3 devs have come forth and said there is vertical scaling, they are just not allowed to use it yet because rendering natively at the vertical resolution looks better which Sony is still emphasizing.

Not only that, but earlier Ozy was claiming there was no scaler at all, and he was wrong about that.

by ... - 2007-01-31 10:48

1) HD-DVD loses the format war to BR (which is almost inevitable now)

the ps3' scalar isnt as good as the 360s simply because it only does half a job (horizontal) while 360 (horizontal+ver tical) I dont really care as I dont play ps2 games and I dont own any and as for my 360 the only xbox game I play with that is halo2, which the framerates slow down considerably during the bigger maps.

» Manny151's article is unimpressive. Nothing but biased BS.

First of all, the title of this article is "The XBOX 360's seriously flawed DVD playback." They claim to have proof the 360's DVD player is "awful" and sub $100 DVD players have better picture by comparing it to an $800 DVD player (of course they wouldn't want to compare it to a PS3 or PS2 before making such accusations.) They also didn't bother to upscale the 360's output even though it can because they want the picture to seem worse for whatever reason, guess it depends on who owns the website and pays the bills.

My XBOX 360's DVD player looks much much better than my progressive scan DVD player and PS2 using component cables. I don't know WTF he has against Microsoft, but he's so full of sh*t he's ripping on the 360 the whole time. Now supposedly this $100 DVD player (not specified or tested) is better. What a dumbf*ck.

HDMI is for Sending ONE signal to ONE signal. When it's split in 3 different cables, and re-encoded, you lose so much of the original quality. Yes, it's still 1080p, but the two are DEFINATELTY different.

are you retarded? or just plain stupid? just like the x360 the ps3 doesn't "require" you to own a 720p or even an hdtv for that matter. of course it looks way better than normal tvs. but you get what you pay for. x360 still looks like ***** on normal tvs just like the ps3 on a normal tv. Not everyone can afford or even care to use EVERY feature of a console. but only when you do, that's when you get the most out of your purchase. If not. keep throwing your money away since your x360 would look like ***** too on your ***** tv.

Everyone knows the PS3 was rushed, from the day i bought it i had to update it, the xmb is not up to par to the xbox's dashboard, online features are very mediocre compared to the xbox especially if i want to play with other friends and team up with them in Resistance. Dvd playback was a joke Blu-ray was good except the video quality is not as good as my dishnet hd programming was, a little dark in some scenes they need to change the video compression. Since Sony is not a software company they wouldnt know what to do with the so much computing power. Im going to be very happy when the iso loaders come out for the PS3 since Sony love to sue people for no reason at all(Lik Sang) hope they lose money with this gives them a good taste of their own medicine. Im really suprised there are not selling in Japan they are just sitting on store shelves in japan since they could care less about Blu-ray and HD-DVD since they could get 100mbps internet for 50 dollars and download hd movies when they want to.

» Microsoft are Haters!!

Microsoft can obviosly talk alot of SH*T because they don't build there hardware they buy it off other companies... Now Sony is making history building a machine that it main processor will probably be incorporated in Microsoft products very soon... i mean the military is using it already... and they get ridiculed... BluRay is kinda still in its early years so of course they will have some problems. Now what is Microsoft's excuse for the capability of the Xbox 180's backwards compatibility... I remember when you needed to wait for an update to fix problems to play some non supported Xbox games... and they are still using Dual Layer DVD's for games... if they don't have the real answers to improve their own gaming system what gives them the right to talk trash about "SONY"... let them build their next X-box and then they can talk trash when they get it right on day one... they are at a one year head start and Nintendo is dominting them especially in Japan.

Instead of improving their backwards-compatibility, Sony should have done what M$ did and told their last-Gen gamers to "F|_|ck off, we're done with XBox 1. Move on!"

But I gotta hand it to M$, their backwards-compatible games look AWESOME on the 360. BOTH Halo and Halo 2!!

http://gear.ign.com/articles/753/753296p1.html

"X-Scene.com also takes care to note the addition of a new scaler chip on the Zephyr's motherboard. The "HANA" chip appears to have replaced the v.1 360's "ANA" scaler chip. A possible correlation between a digital scaler for HDMI (H-ANA) and the regular analog scaler (ANA) is easy to draw. Microsoft has been evasive in the past regarding whether or not the v.1 Xbox 360 could potentially output a digital signal. "

Microsoft "Lied" and Didnt Tell the Consumer that the 360 cant Output an HDCP-Digital Signal and Avoided Answering in the IGN interview:-

"Can the X360 send out a digital signal now, or ever?" Microsoft responded, "Xbox 360 currently doesn't include a digital out connection for video. Our platform is flexible enough to allow support of a digital connection in the future should we choose to do so. When the Xbox 360 was being developed HDMI was nascent and with our current connections we support what the overwhelming majority of consumers have available to them. It's important to note that the market penetration of 1080p displays is in the single digits. Regardless, for those early adopters who have displays and projectors that support 1080p over VGA and component we have a solution and it is a free upgrade for them. We are watching the market closely and will continue to evaluate our solution in the face of consumer demand, but have no announcements regarding additional cables or connections"

As You can see, they Never Mentioned that the Current 360 is Unable to Out-out Digital Signals....They "Lied" to the Consumers With the 1080P Display,Somethi ng that Will Never Happen,Since the ICP protocol will Be Forced and there is No way for the Current 360 To Play Movies or Games at 1080P [It Needs HDMI]

With This,We Understand Which is the truly Flawed System...Microsoft Copied Sony in Everything...the HDDVD addon....The Zyphyr360 with HDMI...its Simply Following Sony,s Footsteps.

I still have my PS2 and play games on it, if I had a PS3 I would still use it. The ONLY reason it supports BC on most games is because it has PS2 hardware inside! If sony had to make emulators to get the games to run the BC support would be horrible because sony wouldn't care (no profit increase.)

"Microsoft treated the Xbox Like Any Software Company,When the Next Version Comes,Dump the First One and [Force the Consumer] to Convert"

XBOX games are still coming out, they just stopped making the XBOX. All the effort put into making more games backward compatible proves this lie wrong.

"Just Like how will they Will try to Screw Current XP Ownerz and Force them into Vista."

My new computer had a free Vista upgrade, and even if it didn't how are people being forced to upgrade? Don't people just copy the software from somebody else usually anyway?

Now you say this "empleyee" is an idiot because he does not say the 360 is flawed? Why should he agree with you? Broken hero said 150 million PS3s would sell! WTF? The linked article only says digital support can be added in the future to existing consoles as well as new ones, the only lies are what broken_hero posts. You're making it out like a software based horizontal scaler is better than an analog one.

"This Company is Flawed and used on Monopoly and Could Care-less about its Customers..Watch as they make the New "Zephyr360" with HDMI and Screw over 12 Million Ownerz...and They never give you a "Choice"...you can Only Buy an HDD or any ADD-on From Microsoft.."

These comments make my head hurt as they are so retarded. I'm not sure how anybody is going to be screwed over. The new version XBOX 360 is going to be an awesome PS3 killer, but that doesn't mean owners of older consoles are missing out. A friend of mine just bought a 65" projection 1080p TV and the XBOX 360 supports it through component! I selected it in the dashboard and the picture is displayed perfectly! So I see no real reason HDMI is needed. Microsoft has not and will not screw its customers. It is possible to make a HDMI cable for current consoles, it just needs a digital scaler. Of course the larger hard drive can be upgraded quite easily too.

I just don't see the big deal about HDMI. I personally think it's BS that's been brought on by greedy movie studios and would rather not use it! It causes problems with certain TVs and has nothing to offer to the consumer.

Saying the PS3 is rushed....yet you dont look at your own console(given that you have an Xbox 360). Everyone I know, including several of my friends that have a 360 and love it, admit that the 360 was the real rushed-out console. Ask yourself why they decided to put a HD DVD add on instead of the real thing in the actual console. And if you really had a PS3, you would know that DVD playback on PS3 > DVD playback on Xbox 360. Hardly any of my DVDs, no matter how *****ed up they are, skip on my PS3. But the Xbox will have trouble reading many discs. And most likely the reason PS3s are sitting in Japanese shelves is because people are too busy looking for Wiis.....and if PS3s are just sitting in japanese shelves, then the 360s over there probably grew roots into the shelves >.>

» The fanboys found a new BS argument

A new XBOX 360 version is a good thing, even to those who already own one. Saying us owners of the older version are getting screwed is complete BS. There will be an HDMI cable for the "old" versions, it just needs some additional circuitry. No HD-DVDs even require HDMI at this time, and no studios have announced that.

DVD playback on the 360 is so much better than the PS3. I don't know what you do to your DVDs, but I've never had one skip. Also, only the XBOX 360 will upconvert the resolution to 720p, 1080i, or 1080p, even without HDMI. Can your PS3 do that? $ony won't let it because it could hurt the blu ray sales they need so bad. Which is also why they forced you to buy one even though you may not need or want it. But at least you don't need those add ons you always complain about because they make you buy it!

PS3s are sitting on shelves mainly because the software library is pathetic. Even if it does improve, it can never come close to the 360's selection or quality exclusive titles.

You both are so full of s*it. If MS fans were in fact getting screwed over, don't you think they would be complaining about it and not some PS3 fanboy making desperate attempts to make the PS3 seem better?

I can't believe you Sony fan boys sometimes. You really do rival my ability to be annoying. I love being annoying. It gets me attention. It's great. I have never felt more happy in my entire life. I'm 37 years old and I live with my mom because all I do is post on this forum all day. It's great. I have no complaints. If I were to complain about anything it's that I don't cause enough *****. Oh yeah, just to let you fan boys know, I am in no way a 'xbot' as you call them. It just think that my superior knowledge to everything in this world should be spread like an infectious disease across the internet. Everyone will remember my name. My project for next year is suicide - I can't wait to make the papers as the first person to kill themselves over Sony having a horrible product.

» 360 fanboys dont have a clue!

listen to the 360 boys throll, lets be honest, its thanks to sony and the playstation series that helped the gaming industry grow. and its because of sony that s why bill gates decided to go into consoles coz he saw how much potential it has. Know ur roots and shut ur mouths 360 boys, u r all getting punked by MS but u all are not even aware of it. gates releases xbox360 only after 2 years of xbox with so few games, at least sony let us had 7 years of great fun with ps2, b4 unleashing ps3 on us... its called 360 coz u all just keep going about the same point over and over again, see us? we r moving, from 1, to 2, now 3 and in a few years time, the future!

My fellow xbox360 gamers, i am disturbed by what has been happening here. It appears that there is at least one imposter trying to impersonate me. I would like to take this opportunity to tell all of you this that i am the REAL Mr. Common Sense. You see, the truth is, you all see me always talking about how great I love the xbox360, the truth is, after playing the Ps3, I finally realise I have been wrong. The Ps3 is the way to the future. I was in awe of its graphics and I must say, there is no way the Xbox360 can beat the Ps3. Now I know you all must be thinking, the REAL Mr.Common Sense wouldnt say that! He's not making any sense, but I assure you, I am making sense when I say this... Ps3 will own the 360!

» I have to impersonate Mr. Common Sense so others will not listen

I'm so tired of Mr. Common Sense playing us for fools and constantly reminding us how much our precious PS3s suck, I'm going to try to get him to leave by using his name in retarded comments that obviously are lacking common sense.

All my fellow PS3 fans, when he says something just cover your ears and yell:"He's lying. He works for MS. Don't listen to him! The PS3 scaler is awesome! Great games are out now! Much better games are coming out! I didn't waste my $600 on hype and lies! I love sony no matter how bad all the reputable news sources say they are doing horrible. I will never buy the very succesful XBOX 360 because I'm a programmed sony bot.!"

Clearly Mr. Common sense just doesn't want people to call his xbox360 inferior, and he has all the rights he wants to defend it, but truth behold, your machine is being challenged by a newcommer who is already '1:1' in some cases(Deffinent ly not in sales, but in other ways:))

Once again, go get sense, because you lost it.

Reasons: impressive?-> your opinion, but "EVER DO ANYTHING"? that's a strong statement.

Impressive in my opinion: All languages on one CD, Ability to put 47GB worth of gaming onto one CD, and more~(and you know what I mean, oh...if you don't, you don't have common sense.)

The truth is I am gay and have no console at all, I am a bum who lives on 42nd street leeching off the WiFi service at the McDonalds nearby. Now how am I a bum with a laptop? Easy, Microsoft gave me the laptop and in return I have to trash the Ps3 and Praise the Xbox 360 (which i am really tired of doing anyway, Gears of war... 3 cores and they have to fake huge battles, "gun fire" coming from buildings that are just light sources with nothing behind them, oh and wtf is up with the horrid Physics, anyway Halo will own but that sucks too).

Sony always does this but they somehow manage to win out in the end, just look at it, the 'Inferior' Ps2 gave us the wonderful Snake Eater, when Xbox was churning out... hmm what game worth noting, oh yea none.

I cant type too many negatives or Gates will have my balls, which are already the size of basketballs from infection

» PS3 Scaler

Having both a Xbox360 and a PS3, I will have to admit for the time being, the Xbox360 does a excellent job of upscaling to 1080i. From what I understand, the Xbox360 has a "dedicated upscaler chip" inside of it with 10 megs of RAM for it.

I read the article a few times over about this "mysterious" PS3 scaler and this is what I got from it. Only "part of the scaler" has been exposed to game developers (horizontal scaling). Does that mean game developers will have to wait for another update for "vertical" scaling?

Games like Resistance: Fall of Man which is coded at 720p, does that mean these games developers have to write a "1080i patch" for the game? (if they ever will)

When this scaler is unlocked 100%, will it be able to upscale without issue like the Xbox360 chip? Can Sony do it with another firmware update?

Just a few question I hope that someone that is a bit more "techno" than me answer please. Also PLEASE no "fanboys" reply just intelligent ones. Thank-you.
