More PS3 rumors: No wireless controller in PS3 20GB version?

There has been a lot of controversy over Sony's next-generation console in the wake of the E3 expo in LA earlier this week. The gaming industry has debated over Sony's new Dual Shock 3 controller, and it has even been questioned whether or not the PS3 was actually at E3 this year.

Today, more rumours have surfaced, regarding the difference between the 20GB and 60GB versions of the PS3. Yesterday, SCEA president Kaz Hirai clarified the differences between the 60GB and 20GB versions, with the main difference being the lack of HDMI support on the cheaper console. The 20GB version will also lack WiFi and memory stick Pro slots. Despite the contradiction to the official Sony PS3 fact sheet, According to Games Radar, the 20GB version will also lack Bluetooth support, which means that gamers with 20GB PS3 consoles will have to use regular wired controllers, rather than their wireless counterparts.

A Sony representative on the floor at E3 also told Games Radar that the 20GB PS3's hard drive will not be upgradable. If you buy the 20GB version, you're stuck with a 20GB hard drive in it. Sony boss man Phil Harrison, in a BBC interview earlier this week, insisted, "What we should be clear about is that the functionality is identical in both machines. There is no difference in what the machine does.". The facts seem to suggest that this isn't the case.

If this is true, I think Sony are giving gamers a raw deal. The 20GB version seems to me like a big rip-off; and I can just imagine the disappointed look on someones face if they receive a PS3 as a gift. Instead of a big smile and a thank you, It'll be a frown and the words 'You got me the wrong one'. Maybe UK gamers are getting the best deal after all.

» UK gamers best deal?

Not at the price that gamestation has got it at, hopefully thats just a mistake though. (please?)

The 20Gb version could be like the core 360 thing, which is everything you need to start, but limited. Difference is, PS3 isn't going to have the other stuff upgradeable. I suppose you don't need the WiFi capabilities (it's just a USB cable to connect the controllers and the PSP to it) but that would be a lot easier without the wire.

Card reader thing isn't a huge deal, but i suppose it could act as a memory card if you wanted to take your game round to your freinds.

HDMI output isn't important at the moment, but could be later on when everyone has the HiDef TVs, especially if they want to watch Blu-Ray movies.

Personally, I would go for the 60Gb version if I had the choice, (which I don't) but I hope that Sony soon don't bother with the 20Gb version and just focus on the 60Gb version. You don't want to have people realise later on that they should have payed the extra and have no way of upgrading.

by Jebus - 2006-05-14 08:43
» what a bunch of BS

Phil Harrison said that you can put whatever size hard drive that u want in the ps3. It is just a 2.5 inch detachable hdd, nothing more, nothing less. So even with the 60gb one u could still upgrade.

by RastaDator - 2006-05-14 09:05
» Now this

hehehe, this is getting funny!

It seems there is a rumours machine trying to put PS3 on bad foot. The liar printer is in full on. It is like before E3, you must remember all that rumours: "Cell is Hype", "Sony doesnt have any playable". "PS3 will cost 10K$" :D, etc, etc.

Now after Sony showed many playable, running beatiful games, plenty solid exclusives (even MotorStorm is getting there), and nothing have been said yet about KZ 2, Socom 4, GoW 3 (look at these titles as second gen) it is obvious M$ needs to convince people to buy x360 before PS3 arrives.

Fully with you there. M$ have spent enough money to start the rumour mill. If only they thought about things for 10 seconds they would realise it's better to put the money into console development.

They rushed there console and now realise how much better the PS3 will be they're trying to hype it down.

by comedy - 2006-05-14 09:10
» they did release real details about this

i read a proper version of the e3 details sony gave out and the differences between the 20gig and 60gig did not include bluetooth, that is, both have it.

also, it says removable 2.5" hdd, it doesn't say either is any different apart from the size, so it not being upgradeable is purely speculation.

it would suck to get a 20gig ps3, but if you think about it there may just be people out there for whom it's a real stretch to even go for the 20gig, in which case not allowing them even that option is a bit wrong.

also, i wondered if that gta4 game is going to ever fit on a dvd... come on, if they release gta4 for xbox350 and ps3 then it'll be making good use of the bluray but will have to be on hddvd. and so all of a sudden you're forced to fork out a load more to get that hddvd drive. although, if it scratched disks (like some new drives tend to) you could send it back without having to part with your xbox.

so basically gta4 on 360 is like 100 ml of iced tea. Meanwhile, gta4 on ps3 is like a case of Corona's.

my point is that ms needs downloadable content for it's gta because of storage. So just because PS3 doesn't get "downloadable" content on it, it doesn't mean it wont me on that *****ing huge br. lol, this is gonna be funny as hell.

Compared to Ps3's version, xbox 360's would be like gta 3 compared to san andreas X 20.

damn ps3 fan boys you guys are something else crackes me up but whats even more funny is how every rumor thats start is by microsoft lol.....if your not carefull the ps3 fan boys and xbox fanboys nintendo might sneak up on ya boo!! there is no such thing as a fanboy just ignorance to say one system is better then the other and you cant compare the 360 to the ps3 there isnt a consumer system for the ps3 to even look at it...but what most of you simple minded idiots forget or maybe you didnt forget and you just play games based on looks and not game play...if a game looked liked obilivion but played like 50 cents bullet proof...why in the hell would i bother to play it let alone buy it...its not about how good a game is...and you can have the most powerful system in the world but if the game makers only make graphics on par with lets say the ps2...its gonna look like crap ..the xbox is more powerful then the ps2 ever dreamed of being...or atleast had a chance to be...yet ps2 still won...and ever since home consoles have come out...never has the most powerful system won the war..look at all the systems that have died that have in some way been better or enhanced....jaguar anyone...dreamcast.......numerous sega products.....bottom line is i didnt buy my 360 till i saw it in action and played some the demos and games...im not buying the ps3 simply cause of feaures vs price sucks its not worth it...second if you dont have hdmi hook ups ...blueray is worthless it will only show the movie in analog due to copy protrection it needs that hook up to play in true HD or atleast what they will consider current highdef...a measly 20gig hardrive lol...come on i bet most games will hardly ever use more then a regular dvd look how big oblivion is and it doesnt use more then one dvd9 ....lastly ..alot good games for the 360 coming out..i love xbox live and the arcade and what coming for it....sony is hurting....they are relying on the system to keep them afloat there electronics division reported a net loss over a billion for last year....so wake up sony is in trouble..and this price point might hurt them even more....they might go the way nintendo did....after all only one way to go after being on top an that is down

by Chavagnatze - 2006-05-14 10:06
» Chop up

I think Sony has the 20GB PS3 just as a way to actually make money in console sales. The 20GB PS3 is a 60GB with all of the goodies removed and probably only costs $300 at the most to manufacture. Thay are selling it for $500.

by ReCkLeSs X - 2006-05-14 10:10
» Well obviously...

#13, I didn't bother reading a rant about fanboys from a fanboy.

So, anyway, this rumor is surly false. And if one actually looked into the pricing of the PS3, they would see how it does make sense. A lot of people just think Sony just threw this together, and then just slapped a high price on it. Well, unlike doing minor updates to their previous console, Sony has added many new features, which makes the console actually worth $1000+ dollars. Which in turn, makes the PS3's price justifiable. Sure, it may be expensive, but Sony never said it would be cheap.

» Once again!!!

Ok I am sriously getting annoyed and confused. I thought this was supposed to be a PS3 blog not another XBOX 360 extension? Firstly almost 60% of news about the PS3 that I have read are all rumours or circle around rumours.

My advice Mr Kyle is to once in a while visit the products section of the Playstation official site! Since it is the company and they know what they are talking about, seems to them that rumour is false!

» fanboy this

ok, i want to sound neutral so as to not be labelled a fanboy, but i also have some opinions which will surely invalidate any sense i make... but here we go:

ok, i very much doubt microsoft had anything to do with rumours being spread, there's enough hatred between the rival camps of fans for sony/nintendo/microsoft for the companies themselves to stay well out of it.

yeah, oblivion is on one disc, and it has a hell of a lot of stuff but i can easily see the day they will want to put more on a disc. they are pushing the storage limits of the current discs, and if they have the space to play with then developers will surely be tempted to put in more content. be it music, videos, extras, neater textures, high-def stuff or simply more levels.

i didn't know about 360 using hddvd drive for only movies, i guess that's a wise move by ms, cos soon enough it would get to the point where it was a necessity and thus would shut out a bunch of gamers.

the distinguishing feature of this gen of consoles will not be graphics, it won't be hd, it may not even be the controller (although that impacts heavily on what i think will determine who wins the console war this time round)... it's going to be games and the fun had playing them. halo3 is going to be massive, personally i don't play fps's on consoles, but there's no denying it's going to sell extraordinarily well. gears of war is also shaping up well, but i'm not buying a 360, so i don't know what else is touted for that (don't give me pgr or that boxing game, they are pants)

wii could be great, there is so much scope to create some cool stuff. but saying that, the controller has an external motion detector?! i am hoping to get a projector as my next 'tv' type thing, and tbh i was going to put the consoles BEHIND me so they aren't in the way. if wii can cope with this i'm cool with it, but if not then i'm going to be sore. it looks like a pretty cool gameplay device that wiimote though.

and ps3, the games on ps3 are what i'm waiting for, ff13 and mgs4 alone have me sold, but there's no telling what other companies are going to produce... playstation has always had an enormous list of titles, through all the generations, and the variety is massive...

i wish we could get off the whole 'my willy is bigger than yours' debate, i don't care if you've got a xbox or a wii, you surely don't care what i buy, but hopefully we can have a reasonable debate about why we like one thing, or if someone's unsure they might find informed opinions to help them choose.

and one last thing, this site is starting to annoy me how there are 100 posts saying 'this sucks you suck' etc, why say that? it is indicative of the fact that the readership (and it appears even the news contributors) are becoming predominantly idiots.

by gamerX09 - 2006-05-14 11:14

Oh Sony, why are you doing the same thing MS did, only worse? And why would the HDD in the 20GB version not be upgradable? Is there really a point to that? Im guessing Sony is trying to make the $500 "deal" seem so bad so that people will get the $600 version. All I know is that Im going to hold off on getting a PS3. By 2007, the price for manufacturing Blu-Ray and the Cell should be low enough to allow ther PS3 to be sold under $400. If not, then the PS3 may have a rough time.

I'm a Sony fanboy but I'm seriously getting sick of all this fighting and rumors. Why don't the people of this website just have a diffrent section for rumors, and let this section for real PS3 news?! Anyways, I'm also going to wait a year or two to get the 60GB version of PS3. Its just expensive even if its the best value you can get. I'm really interested to seeing how they do this holliday season. Just remeber to wear head gear on Black Friday, while you are going strolling the Video Game section!

by ReCkLeSs X - 2006-05-14 11:42
» Ok.

Here it goes, I have to tell some of those here who are not fully aware of Sony's choices.

The $500 version of the PS3 is geared for the more casual gamers, who are not planning on using hi-def, therefore, have no need for the HDMI. The rest, like wifi, memory card readers, and more WILL be upgradable through USB.

Another confirmation, the PS3 WILL BE UPGRADABLE IN TERMS OF HD SIZE. This means that you can go out to the store, buy an external usb hd, then plug in and use on your PS3.

There's a lot of confusion and a lot of assumptions, which makes some of you (like #22) look like fools.

I suppose you are right, I had read the article, but it just pisses me off that they even given that gamesradar article the time of day. Its spreading to all these different news sites and blogs as fact, and its just not true. They thought wifi and bluetooth were the same thing, did no research, and now its being passed off as a credible news source. It makes me doubt anything I read on the internet. I wish all the consoles were out, and all the fanboys that didnt go to e3 and have never played any of the new consoles can just shut the ***** up and we can all stop speculating about stupid minor details. I pray for that day to come SOON.

This Kyle M dude is a true Sony hater that somehow got a job posting news for a site that is devoted to Sony PS3 news. I scrolled down the main page and every single news post that was against Sony and totally fake was posted by him. That seems to be all the kind of news he submits. Whoever is in charge needs to seriously evaluate him and his future as a "News" poster. It's really bad for this site because it's losing all credibility, next will be it's readers. So, I hope whoever runs this site will like the fact that pretty soon people will see a news article and see where it originated from (http://ps3.qj.net) and compares it to "The Enquirer" while they pass it off.

The PS3 has received a lot of bad press since the conference. I'm starting to question whether I want one. First it was the tilt control argument (Nintendo fanyboys won that one) Then there was the video of the PS3 Sonic game freezing at E3. Then there was the whole PS3 not at E3 article. And now the whole wired controller thing. AND the fact that the PS3 is half a grand. Frankly, Sony has been very disapointing in the last week, I hope they clear a lot of this up.

Kyle M. Stop being a hater and please do some research dont just follow other sites that post crap information.

How about this rumor "the wiimote will not be included in the Wii but instead be an add-on for $300" If only we believe everything some idiot writes up in a blog.

Kyle I am sure you are a Sony fanboy (cough cough) but you have to admit your postings have not been objective. You state things like "If this is true" meaning you are leaning towards this being a true story. How about modifying this to include a link to the fact sheet that clearly states this as false:

http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/pdf/060509ae.pdf

That would make this posting objective because its looking at the impossibility of the rumor. Another thing you could do is point that Games Radar's is own by Microsoft. And yet another one would be the fact that many sites have already claimed this untrue!

Ok if you are really not biased you would change this post and every other rumor you have posted with similar comments at the end.
