More PS3 price cuts? Not likely

After news that some Japanese retailers are offering the 60GB PlayStation 3 at discounted prices, and after word that the Australian price tag for the 60GB PS3 unit will be slightly lower than the European price, some might assume that the PS3 is headed for a price cut. However, if supposed comments from a Sony official is to be taken into account, a price cut isn't likely.

Gamesoul reports that in the latest GameInformer they've received a Sony official commented that the company has no intention of lowering the price of the console, and that they are not worried about how the PS3 is currently behind its competitors in number of units sold. The report follows that information up with a claim that some Walmart stores are cutting the 60GB PS3 price by US$ 50 to US$ 550.

As negative as the Gamesoul's report seems, a quick trip to Best Buy's site give us this:

Sold out? But didn't they just say? ...oh never mind. Of course, this best buy screenshot isn't indicative of anything conclusive. Anyhow, considering this screen, and reports of price-cuts, price-increases, and promos, one does have to ask: Is the PS3 doing that bad at retail? We'll let you folks debate that one.

well, I live in Los Angeles, and the two Best Buys near my house were sold out of any SKU of the PS3.

the Target near my house, though, had one 60gb PS3.

once payday hits, I'm buying a PS3 and Resistance, as I'm tired of playing my roommates.

I'll also probably have my old roommate get me Fight Night: Round 3, as she works at EA, and can get it for about $30.

indeed, good games always dictate game sales. i imagine sales will spike for the PS3 when Virtual Fighter 5 hits on February 20th, and when Motorstorm hits sometime in March. they are both widely anticipated releases.

it's always about the games, but the media loves to spin doom and gloom when it means hits. once the PS3 and Wii have settled into their respective markets, posts about actual games will once again become the forefront.

personally, i'm sick of all the spin, in particular, when it comes to anything Playstation or Sony related. 1up and joystiq are possibly two of the worst sites for this.

I was out and about today. I saw 1 instock at costco, and I had previously seen 6 in Walmart which were gone now. What does this mean? Yes you are seeing them, and yes they are still selling. Just because you see them does not mean they are not selling, it means shipments could be good. For all the 360 guys out there that seem to think "in stock" means "not in demand" I should have taken a picture of the 20 360s at costco that the 1 PS3 was sitting on.

For them not to be "in stock" everywhere just as 360 is means they are producing just under demand. Which is still bad because they are missing a few sales. 360 is producing way over demand, hence why you see so many everywhere. Raw sales have NOTHING to do with how many you see in the store. The Wii is beating everyone in the head right now and is having fun trying to keep up. Though it seems to be the publics favorite at the moment, it is not mine. I have one, but can't wait for a PS3 and some good games in a few months.

Oh yeah Circuit City was out too.

there was no PRICE CUTS in JAPAN!!!!

the pics posted on joystiq were from an advertisement, advertising prices of the 20 and 60gig versions at a discounted price provided you trade-in your old console or take up the prebundled broadband internet deal.

you guys are so gullible!!! only in america. lol

Going off of the comment above(excuse me for not quoting you, I'm using my wii to type this) It's funny how people would start heated debates bashing each other, based off an article about a mistranslated japanese ad. Everything is kindling for Xbots and Ps3 fanboys alike. I kinda wonder why they care so much.

I personally think both consoles are great.

» Just a small correction

PS3's 60GB version here in Japan have not enjoyed any price cuts. Only the 20GB ones, and I have yet to see those either.

» agreed

I agree that ms is shipping way too many 360's. During the December the Best Buy near my house a big batch of 360's on the floor, Im talking about more than 200. On the 29th of December I went and a pretty decent chunk was gone but more than half remained. Today that shipment is still in the store. Im not saying that the 360's not selling, it is actually selling pretty well, but ms is shipping way too many of them. I mean the ps2 sold better and there was not such a big batch. But anyways I guess that means ms is not having problems producing it anymore, and thats great.

I agree this is a good thing. I hope all the consoles do well. I just wish flamers would shut up. Why would you wish other consoles harm? That's like telling people you hope their cars break down. That's mean man, MEAN. Ill end up with a 360 too in the end, but I want my PS3 first. I do notice that 360s sell but I think Sony has a better hold on their supply chain management.

» ps3s in stock

i work for a game store and we have had ps3's in stock constantly. yes people are buying them, but not at the rate of wii's we are selling. people are willing to part with $250 much easier than $600.its funny though. on best buys web site they say they are sold out,yet all 4 best buy stores around nashville where i live had up to 10 in stock. they are trying to make it seem like it always sells out,but you can go right in and buy one any day of the week. i have all three, and they are all great systems. but the reason ps2 is still selling well is because it is cheap both used and new.gamecube is dead because anyone with a wii can play all of their games. thats why wii's are selling so well. xbox really messed up with not making any new consoles or new games for xbox.ps3 will sell alright for a while, but i dont see it selling like the ps2 until tyey have a price drop.

The keyword is just what you've said: discounted price

» you are a class A idiot

All PS3 has is RFoM and its next big one isn't till march. Nintendo has paper mario and MP3 coming out around april. Not to mention super smash bros and mario galaxy this year aswell. PS3 has MGS4 and Assasin's creed so i dont think sony has any sort of advantage over nintendo at this point
