Since the folks at IGN have a PS3 debug kit, they had a small Q&A regarding the PS3. We thought that you guys wouldn't really want to read about other people's befuddlement regarding the much-awaited PS2 successor so we'll just drop the Q's and give you the A's. Here be the details:- The system is quiet. However it heats up. You can definitely feel the system spew hot air from the vents on the side. The back of the system gets particularly hot. The sides just get mildly warm.
- A Motorola Bluetooth headset didn't work with the debug unit. However they only tired to connect it using version 1.0.
- The retail unit has a PSP-like sleep mode.
- The test unit has a "Custom Resolution" setting that allows you to tell the system what your TVs maximum resolution is. However, they're not sure it up-scales lower resolutions (The PS3 can play old games remember?) to higher ones.
- You need a memory card adapter to save PS2 games to the PS3's hard drive.
- The face buttons on the controller are analog. Not sure about the D-PAD though, but we already confirmed the buttons are analog. The face buttons have just a tiny bit more give, a little more squishy feeling to them so it's easier for you to tell how hard you're pressing.
- The PS3's set up to run stuff off external HDDs but the folder structure might be tough for it to find stuff.

However, you ONLY need a memory card adaptor if you want to transfer your saves from your PS2 to your PS3.

Is this from the debug unit or a retail unit? I've been reading comments of retail unit that states the PS3 didn't get that hot (which I think is fubar). Now we'll get to see how many "gamers" will keep their unit well ventilated. I know that a major issue for the 360 was people keeping their system where the heat couldn't ventilate. Thus causing lock up and error lights- then blaming MS and the 360.

the ps3 is looking GREAT! you can even start up and close down the console only with the controller ( playstation button option )
They check the heat and said there was some heat, but nothing special, and they said that the ps3's heat was NOT AT ALL comparable the the "extreme" heat of the xbox360 so I suppose it does heat up , yes, but nothing out of the ordinary.
They also had 2 controllers and player resistance - fall of man versus or coop, don't remember ( I was doing running on my treadmill while watching the show ( I want my 6pack so I exercice a lot )) and it looked great! The windows break REALLY cool! you can see they worked on it a lot, but they only had a "near finished" build, not the finished game.
They also player ridge racer with only the X, the ( R1 I think ) nitro button and the motion sensing :D:D I worked great and they said it was extremely responsive, like perfect response
Also, the guy from sony said ( 1week ago ) that normal wireless headset would work fine and that's why they didn't make one. So I suppose the debug unit is simply nor "finished".
the system have th same sound as a ps2 slim ( supposely , I didn't heard it myself lol )
and nobody care about a sleep mode, I didn't see it anyway on the gamespot show... But anyway, it's a home console, I'll close it after I player lol, and with the controller
ps: saved 700$CAD for my PS3. ( 632$US )
But still dunno wich one I'll buy... no, I'll take the 499$US one and change the HDD later ( I suppose later we'll be able to ) with like a 500 gig for less than 100$
