More emulation: MAME on PlayStation 3 |

Jurai commented on our previous post on the PS3 Mario a few hours ago, saying that there was another video up. This time, he's used the Linux OS on the PS3 to run MAME, and even showed a quick peek at arcade-styled Pac-Man.
For those who don't know what MAME is, it stands for "Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator," designed to play different arcade ROMs on your PC. Now, since Sony's new console is basically a computer that runs Linux, it seemed like a matter of time till someone decided to run a Linux-based MAME program on it.

oh yeah PSWII ownage right there, only reason I have a 360 is so I can expoit the fact that I can run backup games on it
I had been saying this for a while-- if PS3 has Linux, doesn't that mean it can run Mame? People said no, but I'm glad that they were wrong! That's awesome, now I have access to hundreds of classics on an actual gaming system! Great job, Sony and 1337 haxx0rz!
I know that most of your bloggers currently don't have a PS3 but any chance we can get some of this fine homebrew for the PS3 to download just in case we get one. Thanks for the info and I can't wait to see what is next!
Seriously this even after all the bashing of this unit I think people are just jealous of this all in one sexy console. No bash on the wii I think it's very innovative alone with it's controller. I can see the ps3 being the top leader like its brother ps2

Actually, you can do a google search for MAME.
Linux versions are called GXMAME and XMAME, if memory serves me right.
We're checking on the legality of hosting the emulator. As far as we can tell, it wouldn't be acceptable to game companies if we hosted the ROMs, so you may have to do a manual search.
We'll post something on that PS3 emulation titles and how-to articles once we get more info and confirmation.
It does everything my modded xbox does, and my PC....so not sure why I need it yet. Hell even my PSP does a decent job at everything the PS3 does...

Since the PS3 can run linux uncrippled, anything that runs under linux seems to be ok....so yeah, there will be many emulators comming out....
I have a 360 but I'll be getting ps3 just for the linux. I just have a couple of question. I had the linus kit for the ps2 and it was very slow. How is the ps3 linux? Network support? VLC?
yep your right they do, modded at least, PS3 does it almost right out of the box, all you gotta do is slap in a linux boot and your good to go. Id say its a lot simpler than moding your xbox or the countless months hackers have been at the psp and the onslaught of firmware updates. But its just as simple as starting off with new PC.
The games will tell you when you need it, not the features... those are all extra goodies in an attempt to make you drool and be giddy.

dude when your on linux u have access to any emulator.
snes nes genesis why is it so impressive he got mame. there are even psone emulators. its funny as people just now discover this stuff. linux is the ***** btw, i'm sure you'll all figure that out
