More copyright woes: Marvel Comics shutting down LittleBigPlanet costumes

Deadpool - Image 1D'oh! It looks like Marvel Comics is joining the bandwagon in fortifying their defenses against copyright infringement in LittleBigPlanet. Apparently, Marvel has been hounding Sony to start moderating user-created customized Sackboy costumes that take from the Marvel universe.

We're not sure if this already applies in-game, but as far as the LittleBigWorkshop is concerned, some people have already gotten some emails from Sony stating that they had to mod some users' creations.

Over at the LittleBigWorkshop forums, one guy by the name of MuffinMan71 talks of his plight. Turns out that the Sackboy in question was one based on the Thing (like, Fantastic Four, Thing). Here's part of the email he received from the Workshop:

We received a notice from Marvel Entertainment, Inc. (“Marvel”) that materials that you posted on LittleBIGWorkshop.com infringe Marvel’s copyrights. Under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and the Little Big Workshop Copyright Policy, we removed and disabled access to these materials.

Though this is not in-game, it's still related to the many issues we've been hearing about with regard to copyright infringement in LittleBigPlanet. I know it's a bit tough hearing this - I myself want to see a Deadpool Sackboy eventually - but, sigh, rules are rules, no matter how unfair they seem.

Are they serious? Sackboy looks like "The Thing" wow whoever thought that is a little retarded for thinking that "Sackboy" ( a little sack that is made into a puppet) looks like "Thing" (a giant rock man). ridiculous

Apparently you didn't read fully, no offense intended, but Marvel is commenting on COSTUMES created by users that could make Sackboy look like certain Marvel characters, not against Sackboy himself.

Still is bull*****, I can design my own marvel costumes and run around in them all I want at home, I don't see a marvel representative knockin on my door saying they will sue me.

they cant go trying to ban everything which could, if arranged correctly, resemble one of their characters...

boo @ marvel, let them be the new metallica. (reference to their sturggle agains digital music )

BOOOO MARVEL.

sigh. to think i've had so high regard for marvel! (despite the silly ret-cons, they're still cool.) but now this? i mean. can't the same argument be posed on other media?

look at all those webcomics out there. they always have references to characters from books, movies, video games, tv shows. and do the copyright owners take explicit measure to try and snuff those out? no.

every time a big game gets released, some webcomic like vgcats will have some character from the game appear on the comic. and then there are shows like SNL or madTV or even family guy or robot chicken or south park! do the video game companies go out of their way to have those episodes pulled out? no.

why marvel? why?! you're starting to become like square enix, snuffing out fans who are clearing worshipping your franchises! remember what happened to the chrono trigger hd project? guh.

Littlebig planet is supposed to be like how a drawing pad is to an artist. If they do this then my Link sackboy and my ash catchem from pokemon will get removed too and thats the only reason i play LBP. Im almost done making my Nintendo gang of sackboys

It makes me want to boycott Marvel as well as any of the other parties that are threatening legal action. Where's the damage being done? It's not like Marvel or anybody else is losing any revenue because of this, unless they were planning to have some DLC on the PS Store which I doubt. It's not the developers fault for making a game that allows such creativity or Sony's for publishing it. To hell with all of these companies. They should look at it as some sort of free promotion especially since user generated content cannot be sold under the PSN terms of service.

Marvel is not with good terms with Capcom too.

for years fans have been hounding Capcom to make a new Marvel VS Capcom game aka MVSC3 but to no avail, Capcom simply cant because Marvel sold all their game rights to EA.

Hence Capcom resorted to old japanese anime's which resulted in a super AWESOME game called Tatsunoko VS Capcom for the Japanese Nintendo Wii exclusively.

This is jsut typical these days. Apple are sueing everyone for anything to do against the iphone/ipod so someone sueing about a costume in mbp is just typical.

It proves the big companies these days dont give a ***** about anyone but thier own pockets full of cash.

Dont they realise its better to put thier characters in other games. Give them more free publicity for the better. Instead they are shooting themselves int he foot. No marvel comic skins for lbp? That just means there will be more from thier rivals.

How about everying do a superman outfit. lets see them sue everyone. when they realise its ONLY A GAME and NOT REAL then they might realise sueing is really stupid.

wouldn't it be under the label of "fan fiction?" If i drew characters from marvel and put it on an art forum are they going to come to me and sue me? no because it's fan fiction. This is the same thing. But now marvel must have givin the ok to sony because sony has made dlc for marvel
